Digestive plasticity, which refers to changes in digestive features due to changes in both internal and external environmental
conditions, is a crucial factor for understanding the ability of species to cope with environmental changes. In Europe, agricultural
intensification and the loss of forests have been major challenges for original forest dwellers, however some species, such
as the European roe deer (Capreolus capreolus), have been able to successfully colonize these new habitats. In this work, we investigated the adaptation of some digestive
features of roe deer to the agricultural landscapes. We assessed whether changes in local landscape structure influenced the
mass of both reticulorumen (RR) and distal fermentation chamber (DFC) of 47 juvenile and adult roe deer inhabiting an agro-ecosystem
in southwest France. Woodland cover had a clear effect on diet quality (estimated by the rate of gas production of digestive
contents) and DFC weight of animals. In fact, deer from the most forested landscapes showed heavier DFCs and fed on poorer
quality diet (lower gas production) than their counterparts from the most open landscapes. RR mass was less influenced by
the landscape openness, being the age of animals the main factor for understanding the variations of this digestive feature
in our study area. We can conclude that colonizing agricultural landscapes increases the access to highly energetic and digestive

The phenology of tree species in environments that are subject to strong climatic seasonality is mainly determined by water availability, which may vary as a function of wood density. The relationship among phenology, water potential, wood density and the capacity of water storage in the stem were determined for woody species of caatinga vegetation (dry forest) in the semiarid region of NE Brazil. Leaf flush and fall, flowering and fruiting events were recorded over a 31-month period, and the water potential was measured over a two-year period. These data were related to precipitation, water availability in the soil and photoperiod. Seven deciduous species exhibited low wood density (DLWD,?<0.5?g?cm?3), high capacity of water storage in the stem (until 250?% of the dry weight) and high water potential during the year, as opposed to 15 deciduous species that showed high wood density (DHWD,?≥0.5?g?cm?3). Leaf flush, flowering and the fruiting of DHWD species were related to precipitation, whereas these phenological events occurred at the end of the dry season and/or the beginning of the rainy season for DLWD species and were related to the photoperiod. The two evergreen species showed variations of water potential that were intermediate between those of DHWD and DLWD deciduous species, leaf flush during the dry season and flowering at the end of dry season. Diversity and abundance of ground beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae) can be enhanced in vegetable and field intercropping systems, but the complexity of polycultures precludes the application of generalized assumptions of effects for novel intercropping combinations. In a field experiment conducted at Lacombe and Ellerslie, Alberta, Canada, in 2005 and 2006, we investigated the effects of intercropping canola (Brassica napus L.) with wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) on the diversity and community structure of carabid beetles, and on the activity density responses of individual carabid species. Shannon-Wiener diversity index scores and species evenness increased significantly as the proportion of wheat comprising total crop plant populations increased in one site-year of the study, indicating a positive response to enhanced crop plant species evenness in the intercrops, and in that same site-year, ground beetle communities in intercrops shifted to more closely approximate those in wheat monocultures as the percentage of wheat in the intercrops increased. Individual carabid species activity densities showed differing responses to intercropping, although activity densities of some potential root maggot (Delia spp.) (Diptera: Anthomyiidae) predators were greater in intercrops with high proportions of wheat than in canola monocultures. The activity density of Pterostichus melanarius (Illiger), the most abundant species collected, tended to be greater in canola monocultures than high-wheat intercrops or wheat monocultures. We conclude that intercrops of canola and wheat have the potential to enhance populations of some carabid species, therefore possibly exerting increased pressure on some canola insect pests. 相似文献

Herein we describe a possibility of selective dissolution of xylan, the most important type of hemicellulose, from Eucalyptus globulus kraft pulp using ionic liquids (ILs). On the basis of the IL 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium dimethyl phosphate, which is well-known to dissolve pulp, the phosphate anion was modified by substituting one oxygen atom for sulfur and selenium, respectively. This alteration reduces the hydrogen bond basicity of the IL and therefore prevents dissolution of cellulose fibers, whereas the less ordered xylan is still dissolved. (1)H NMR spectra of model solutions and Kamlet-Taft parameters were used to quantify the solvent polarity and hydrogen bond acceptor properties of the ILs. These parameters have been correlated to their ability to dissolve xylan and cellulose, which was monitored by (13)C NMR spectroscopy. It was found that the selectivity for xylan dissolution increases to a certain extent with decreasing hydrogen-bond-accepting ability of anions of the ILs. 相似文献

The ionic liquids 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate [emim]OAc, N,N,N,N-tetramethylguanidium propionate [TMGH]EtCO(2), and N,N,N,N-tetramethylguanidium acetate [TMGH]OAc, and the traditional cellulose solvent N-methylmorpholine N-oxide NMMO were characterized for their Kamlet-Taft (KT) values at several water contents and temperatures. For the ionic liquids and NMMO, thresholds of regeneration of cellulose solutions by water were determined using nephelometry and rheometry. Regeneration from wet IL was found to be asymmetric compared to dissolution into wet IL. KT parameters were found to remain almost constant at temperatures, between 20-100 °C, even at different water contents. Among the KT parameters, the β value was found to change most drastically, with an almost linear decrease upon addition of water. The ability of the mixtures to dissolve cellulose was best explained by the difference β-α (net basicity), rather than β alone. Regeneration of cellulose starts at thresholds values of approximately β < 0.8 (β-α < 0.35) and displayed four phases. 相似文献

In the intestine, dysregulation of miRNA is associated with inflammation, disruption of the gastrointestinal barrier, and the onset of gastrointestinal disorders. This study identifies miRNAs involved in the maintenance of intercellular junctions and barrier integrity. For the functional identification of barrier affecting miRNAs, we took advantage of the barrier-enforcing effects of the probiotic bacterium Escherichia coli Nissle 1917 (EcN) which can be monitored by enhanced transepithelial resistance (TER). miRNA-profiling of T84 monolayers prior and after co-incubation with EcN revealed for the first time differentially regulated miRNAs (miR-203, miR-483-3p, miR-595) targeting tight junction (TJ) proteins. Using real-time PCR, Western blotting and specific miRNA mimics, we showed that these miRNAs are involved in the regulation of barrier function by modulating the expression of regulatory and structural components of tight junctional complexes. Furthermore, specific inhibitors directed at these miRNA abrogated the disturbance of tight junctions induced by enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC). The half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC(50)) was determined to 340 nM by monitoring inhibitor kinetics. In summary, we conclude that specific miRNAs effect regulatory as well as structural proteins of the junctional complex which in turn are involved in the barrier enhancing effect of EcN. Hence, we suggest that the application of miRNAs might be refined and further developed as a novel supportive strategy for the treatment of gastrointestinal disorders. 相似文献

Unusual biogeographic patterns of closely related groups reflect events in the past, and molecular analyses can help to elucidate these events. While ample research on the origin of disjunct distributions of different organism groups in the Western Paleartic has been conducted, such studies are rare for Eastern Palearctic organisms. In this paper we present a phylogeographic analysis of the disjunct distribution pattern of the extant species of the strongly cool-adapted Epiophlebia dragonflies from Asia. We investigated sequences of the usually more conserved 18 S rDNA and 28 S rDNA genes and the more variable sequences of ITS1, ITS2 and CO2 of all three currently recognised Epiophlebia species and of a sample of other odonatan species. In all genes investigated the degrees of similarity between species of Epiophlebia are very high and resemble those otherwise found between different populations of the same species in Odonata. This indicates that substantial gene transfer between these populations occurred in the comparatively recent past. Our analyses imply a wide distribution of the ancestor of extant Epiophlebia in Southeast Asia during the last ice age, when suitable habitats were more common. During the following warming phase, its range contracted, resulting in the current disjunct distribution. Given the strong sensitivity of these species to climatic parameters, the current trend to increasing global temperatures will further reduce acceptable habitats and seriously threaten the existences of these last representatives of an ancient group of Odonata. 相似文献
