The taste of polycose in hamsters 总被引:2,自引:2,他引:0
Hamsters show a preference for Polycose, a mixture of starch-derived
glucose polymers, that is as strong as their preference for sucrose.
However, in the hamster, taste aversions to Polycose may be less easily
acquired than taste aversions to sucrose and the qualitative aspects of
Polycose are unknown in this species. In order to examine the taste of
Polycose in the hamster, we utilized a taste-aversion protocol with two
conditioning trials. Animals were trained to avoid one of three different
conditioning stimuli: 50 mM sucrose, 100 mM Polycose and a mixture of 50 mM
sucrose with 100 mM Polycose. Control animals were conditioned with
deionized water. After the second conditioning trial, generalization
testing began for the three conditioning stimuli plus 3 mM citric acid, 300
mM KCI and 30 mM NaCl. The results showed that aversions to Polycose,
sucrose or the Polycose/sucrose mixture cross- generalized, demonstrating
that Polycose and sucrose share a common taste percept in the hamster. None
of the aversions generalized to NaCl, citric acid or KCI. In addition,
comparisons among the patterns of taste generalizations indicated that the
tastes of Polycose and sucrose also had distinct qualitative components.
Finally, although the taste of 100 mM Polycose was more salient than the
taste of 50 mM sucrose, the taste of sucrose could still be detected in a
mixture with Polycose.

A 4.8-kb plasmid region carrying the four genes mcjABCD necessary for production of and immunity to the cyclic peptide antibiotic microcin J25 (MccJ25) has been sequenced. mcjA encodes the primary structure of MccJ25 as a precursor endowed with an N-terminal extension of 37 amino acids. The products of mcjB and mcjC are thought to be involved in microcin maturation, which implies cleavage of McjA and head-tail linkage of the 21-residue pro-MccJ25. The predicted McjD polypeptide, which is highly similar to several ABC exporters, was found to be required for MccJ25 secretion, thus explaining its ability to confer immunity to MccJ25. 相似文献

Although expression of the ErbB4 receptor tyrosine kinase in breast cancer is generally regarded as a marker for favorable patient prognosis, controversial exceptions have been reported. Alternative splicing of ErbB4 pre-mRNAs results in the expression of distinct receptor isoforms with differential susceptibility to enzymatic cleavage and different downstream signaling protein recruitment potential that could affect tumor progression in different ways. ErbB4 protein expression from nontransfected cells is generally low compared with ErbB1 in most cell lines, and much of our knowledge of the role of ErbB4 in breast cancer is derived from the ectopic overexpression of the receptor in non-breast-derived cell lines. One of the primary functions of ErbB4 in vivo is in the maturation of mammary glands during pregnancy and lactation induction. Pregnancy and extended lactation durations have been correlated with reduced risk of breast cancer, and the role of ErbB4 in tumor suppression may therefore be linked with its role in lactation. Most reports are consistent with a role for ErbB4 in reversing growth stimuli triggered by other ErbB family members during puberty. In this report, we provide a systems-level examination of several reports highlighting the seemingly opposing roles of ErbB4 in breast cancer and potential explanations for the discrepancies and draw the conclusion that future studies examining the function of ErbB4 in breast cancer should also take into account the pregnancy history, lactation status, and hormone supplementation or ablation history of the patient from whom the tumor or tumor cells are derived. 相似文献

The “All Taxa Biodiversity Inventories” (ATBIs) project coordinated by the European Distributed Institute of Taxonomy (EDIT) aims to achieve a baseline biodiversity assessment of flora and fauna in those regions characterized by a lack of knowledge and a high potential for biodiversity. Within the framework of the ATBIs, the aim of this study was to analyse the diatom flora and ecology of a complex of freshwater ecosystems in the Maritime Alps Natural Park (Italy), designated as a Special area of Conservation under the European Habitat Directive. We sampled epilithic and epiphytic diatoms in different habitats in 24 sites: shallow lake, springs, and streams. Our analysis resulted in a list of 138 diatom taxa, highlighting the great biodiversity and the complex structure of the investigated diatom communities. The taxa list included a wide range of uncommon species, including some recorded for the first time in North-Western Italy. Among the different habitats the highest level of diversity was found in the more lentic waters, in particular in limnocrene springs. These results show that the diatom communities of pristine and undisturbed high-mountain environments are rich and complex, despite the severe environmental conditions. 相似文献

Upon interaction with bovine heart cardiolipin (CL), horse heart cytochrome c (cytc) changes its tertiary structure disrupting the heme-Fe-Met80 distal bond, reduces drastically the midpoint potential out of the range required for its physiological role, binds CO and NO with high affinity, and displays peroxidase activity. Here, the effect of CL on peroxynitrite isomerization by ferric cytc (cytc-Fe(III)) is reported. In the absence of CL, hexa-coordinated cytc does not catalyze peroxynitrite isomerization. In contrast, CL facilitates cytc-Fe(III)-mediated isomerization of peroxynitrite in a dose-dependent fashion inducing the penta-coordination of the heme-Fe(III)-atom. The value of the second order rate constant for CL-cytc-Fe(III)-mediated isomerization of peroxynitrite (kon) is (3.2 ± 0.4) × 105 M−1 s−1. The apparent dissociation equilibrium constant for CL binding to cytc-Fe(III) is (5.1 ± 0.8) × 10−5 M. These results suggest that CL-cytc could play either pro-apoptotic or anti-apoptotic effects facilitating lipid peroxidation and scavenging of reactive nitrogen species, such as peroxynitrite, respectively. 相似文献

目的:利用形态学特征与Nested-PCR技术鉴定黄檗丛枝菌根真菌。方法:采用酸性品红染色法挑选黄檗丛枝菌根。同时,利用湿筛法获得AM真菌孢子,进行形态学鉴定。运用Nested-PCR技术,对黄檗粗提DNA进行特异性扩增,采用blastn进行序列相似性比较。并构建系统进化树,确定侵染黄檗根系的AM真菌。结果:编号为HDAM-1的AM真菌孢子,形态特征与G.intraradices的特征描述一致。Nested-PCR检测到约455bp的目的片段,其序列与G.intraradices(DQ469118)相似性最高,达97.8%,有11个碱基的差异。系统进化树显示该序列在基于25S rDNA的进化树中与G.intraradices(DQ469118.1)处于同一分支,确定G.intraradices侵染黄檗根系。结论:将形态学特征与Nested-PCR技术相结合鉴定AM真菌,不仅简易、经济,而且能够提高研究结果的可靠性。 相似文献
