The taxonomic position ofTarsius has been a topic of some debate. Recent molecular and anatomical studies have shoen that tarsiers share a number of derived traits with Anthropoids. These include aspects of their reporductive biology and aspects of their olfactory and visual systems. It has, therefore, been suggested that, despite a number of convergences with strepsirhine primates, tarsiers should be classified with the Anthropoid primates. We use comparative analyses of relative primate brain part volumes to determine whetherTarsius should be classified as a Haplorhine. We show that, for each of seven brain components whose relative size discriminates unequivocally between Strepsirhines and Haplorhines, the tarsiers fall in the Haplorhine distribution. The ability to create lasting, trust-based friendships makes it possible for humans to form large and coherent groups. The recent literature on the evolution of sociality and on the network dynamics of human societies suggests that large human groups have a layered structure generated by emotionally supported social relationships. There are also gender differences in adult social style which may involve different trade-offs between the quantity and quality of friendships. Although many have suggested that females tend to focus on intimate relations with a few other females, while males build larger, more hierarchical coalitions, the existence of such gender differences is disputed and data from adults is scarce. Here, we present cross-cultural evidence for gender differences in the preference for close friendships. We use a sample of ∼112,000 profile pictures from nine world regions posted on a popular social networking site to show that, in self-selected displays of social relationships, women favour dyadic relations, whereas men favour larger, all-male cliques. These apparently different solutions to quality-quantity trade-offs suggest a universal and fundamental difference in the function of close friendships for the two sexes.  相似文献

We report the synthesis and in vitro activity of a series of novel substituted N-{3-[(1,1-dioxido-1,2-benzothiazol-3-yl)(phenyl)amino]propyl}benzamide analogs. These analogs showed potent inhibitory activity against Kv1.3. Several demonstrated similar potency to the known Kv1.3 inhibitor PAP-1 when tested under the IonWorks patch clamp assay conditions. Two compounds 13i and 13rr were advanced further as potential tool compounds for in vivo validation studies.  相似文献

Cre is widely used for DNA tailoring and, in combination with recombineering techniques, to modify BAC/PAC sequences for generating transgenic animals. However, mammalian genomes contain recombinase recognition sites (cryptic loxP sites) that can promote illegitimate DNA recombination and damage when cells express the Cre recombinase gene. We have created a new bioinformatic tool, FuzznucComparator, which searches for cryptic loxP sites and we have applied it to the analysis of the whole mouse genome. We found that cryptic loxP sites occur frequently and are homogeneously distributed in the genome. Given the mammalian nature of BAC/PAC genomic inserts, we hypothesised that the presence of cryptic loxP sites may affect the ability to grow and modify BAC and PAC clones in E. coli expressing Cre recombinase. We have observed a defect in bacterial growth when some BACs and PACs were transformed into EL350, a DH10B-derived bacterial strain that expresses Cre recombinase under the control of an arabinose-inducible promoter. In this study, we have demonstrated that Cre recombinase expression is leaky in un-induced EL350 cells and that some BAC/PAC sequences contain cryptic loxP sites, which are active and mediate the introduction of single-strand nicks in BAC/PAC genomic inserts.  相似文献

One of the proposed functions of human smiling is to advertise cooperative dispositions and thereby increase the likelihood that a social partner would invest resources in a relationship. In particular, smiles involving an emotional component would be honest signals of altruistic dispositions because they are not easy to produce voluntarily. In this study, 60 people were covertly filmed while interacting with a friend in two conditions: control and sharing. Smiles were classified into Duchenne (spontaneous) and non-Duchenne smiles. Participants also completed a series of questionnaires, including the Altruism Scale and a self-report questionnaire of emotional state. Interestingly, Duchenne smiles were displayed at higher rates in the sharing situation as opposed to the control situation, whereas non-Duchenne smiles were unaffected by the type of interaction. Furthermore, Duchenne smiles in the sharing interaction were positively affected by a measure of altruism. Self-reported emotional states did not vary between conditions and were poorly related to smiling. This study shows that the Duchenne smile is relevant to situations that involve the sharing of material resources because it would reliably advertise altruistic intentions. The Duchenne smile could therefore be an important signal in the formation and maintenance of cooperative relationships.  相似文献

One of the proposed ecological functions of sleep is to conserve energy. The majority of studies that support this theory have been done on endothermic animals whose body temperatures drop during sleep due to the reduced neurological control of thermoregulation. In the present study, we examined typical temperatures to which the Desert Iguana, Dipsosaurus dorsalis, is exposed to in the field and found that mean high temperatures ranged from 24-58 degrees C throughout the active portion of the year. We also examined the ecological savings that sleep could provide for this ectothermic iguana using a closed system respirometer. We found that laboratory-acclimated iguanas are able to save significantly more (27.6%) energy by sleeping than by being awake and that field iguanas also had significant savings of energy (69.1%) while asleep. However, iguanas could save more energy by remaining awake at cooler temperatures than by sleeping at warmer temperatures. In addition, we found no correlation for time of night with metabolic rate. Our study supports the hypothesis that one potential function of sleep is to conserve energy.  相似文献

ApaG proteins are found in a wide variety of bacterial genomes but their function is as yet unknown. Some eukaryotic proteins involved in protein-protein interactions, such as the human polymerase delta-interacting protein (PDIP38) and the F Box A (FBA) proteins, contain ApaG homology domains. We have used NMR to determine the solution structure of ApaG protein from the plant pathogen Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. citri (ApaG(Xac)) with the aim to shed some light on its molecular function. ApaG(Xac) is characterized by seven antiparallel beta strands forming two beta sheets, one containing three strands (ABE) and the other four strands (GFCC'). Relaxation measurements indicate that the protein has a quite rigid structure. In spite of the presence of a putative GXGXXG pyrophosphate binding motif ApaG(Xac) does not bind ATP or GTP, in vitro. On the other hand, ApaG(Xac) adopts a fibronectin type III (Fn3) fold, which is consistent with the hypothesis that it is involved in mediating protein-protein interactions. The fact that the proteins of ApaG family do not display significant sequence similarity with the Fn3 domains found in other eukaryotic or bacterial proteins suggests that Fn3 domain may have arisen earlier in evolution than previously estimated.  相似文献
