Two new fossil vertebrate localities have been discovered close to each other in the Upper Jurassic (Effingen beds, Upper Oxfordian) of the Southern Jura department (France). One of the localities have yielded an incomplete skeleton of the crocodilian Steneosaurus (including a well preserved skull), as well as fish remains and an abundant invertebrate fauna. The second locality has mainly yielded various fragmentary bones of Steneosaurus. This is the first discovery of well preserved crocodilian remains in the Oxfordian of the Jura.  相似文献

Light is one of the most important factors affecting marine phytoplankton growth, and its variability in time and space strongly influences algal performance and success. The hypothesis tested in this work is that the activity of the xanthophyll cycle and the development of nonphotochemical quenching could be considered a functional trait of algal diversity. If this hypothesis is true, a relationship must exist between fast‐activated pigment variations linked to photoprotective behavior and the ecology of the species. This assumption was tested on three diatoms: Skeletonema marinoi Sarno et Zingone, Thalassiosira rotula Meunier, and Chaetoceros socialis Lauder. These three diatoms occupy different ecological niches. Strains of these diatoms were subjected to five changes in irradiance. Xanthophyll‐cycle activity, quantum yield of fluorescence, and electron transport rate were the main parameters determined. There were marked interspecific differences in xanthophyll‐cycle activity, and these differences were dependent on the light history of the cells. Chaetoceros socialis responded efficiently to changing irradiance, which might relate to its dominance during the spring bloom in some coastal areas. In contrast, T. rotula responded with a slower photoprotection activation, which seems to reflect its more offshore ecological distribution. The photoresponse of S. marinoi (a late‐winter coastal species blooming in the Adriatic Sea) was light‐history dependent, becoming photoinhibited under high light when acclimated to low light, but capable of reaching a high photoprotection level when acclimated to moderate light. Our hypothesis on the photoprotection capacity as a functional trait in microalgae seems to be validated given the results of this study.  相似文献

Prostaglandin-E2 (PGE2) is known to trigger suicidal death of nucleated cells (apoptosis) and enucleated erythrocytes (eryptosis). In erythrocytes PGE2 induced suicidal cell death involves activation of nonselective cation channels leading to Ca2+ entry followed by cell shrinkage and triggering of Ca2+ sensitive cell membrane scrambling with phosphatidylserine (PS) exposure at the cell surface. The present study was performed to explore whether PGE2 induces apoptosis of nucleated cells similarly through cation channel activation and to possibly disclose the molecular identity of the cation channels involved. To this end, Ca2+ activity was estimated from Fluo3 fluorescence, mitochondrial potential from DePsipher fluorescence, phosphatidylserine exposure from annexin binding, caspase activation from caspAce fluorescence, cell volume from FACS forward scatter, and DNA fragmentation utilizing a photometric enzyme immunoassay. Stimulation of K562 human leukaemia cells with PGE2 (50 microM) increased cytosolic Ca2+ activity, decreased forward scatter, depolarized the mitochondrial potential, increased annexin binding, led to caspase activation and resulted in DNA fragmentation. Gene silencing of the Ca2+-permeable transient receptor potential cation channel TRPC7 significantly blunted PGE2-induced triggering of PS exposure and DNA fragmentation. In conclusion, K562 cells express Ca2+-permeable TRPC7 channels, which are activated by PGE2 and participate in the triggering of apoptosis.  相似文献

Three bacteriocin-producing bifidobacterial isolates from newborns were identified as Bifidobacterium thermacidophilum (two strains) and B. thermophilum (one strain). This study was undertaken to evaluate the ability of these strains to compete with food-borne Listeria monocytogenes for adhesion and invasion sites on Caco-2 and HT-29 cells. The bifidobacteria adhered at levels ranging from 4% to 10% of the CFU added, but none of the bifidobacteria were able to invade cells. The abilities of Listeria to adhere to and to invade cells varied widely depending on the strain tested. Three groups of Listeria were identified based on invasiveness: weakly invasive, moderately invasive, and highly invasive strains. One strain from each group was tested in competition with bifidobacteria. B. thermacidophilum RBL70 was the most effective in blocking invasion of Listeria, and the decreases in invasion ranged from 38% to 90%. For all three bifidobacterial strains, contact between the cell monolayer and the bifidobacteria for 1 h before exposure to Listeria increased the degree of inhibition. Finally, visualization of competition for adhesion sites on cells by fluorescent in situ hybridization suggested that the two bacteria tended to adhere in close proximity.  相似文献

For the first time in Belgium and Luxembourg, the diversity and taxonomy of 95 cyanobacterial strains isolated from freshwater blooms were assessed by the comparison of phenotypes and partial 16S rRNA gene sequences. The results showed the high diversity of nanoplanktonic, picoplanktonic, and benthic–periphytic cyanobacteria accompanying the main bloom‐forming taxa. Indeed, besides 15 morphotypes of bloom‐forming taxa, seven non‐bloom‐forming planktonic morphotypes and 11 morphotypes from benthic–periphytic taxa were isolated in culture from the plankton samples of 35 water bodies. The bloom‐forming strains belonged to the genera Microcystis, Woronichinia, Planktothrix, Anabaena, and Aphanizomenon, whereas the other strains isolated from the same samples were assigned to the nanoplanktonic Aphanocapsa, Aphanothece, Snowella, and Pseudanabaena; to the picoplanktonic Cyanobium; and to the benthic–periphytic Geitlerinema, Komvophoron, Leptolyngbya, Lyngbya, Phormidium, Calothrix, Nostoc, and Trichormus. The results supported both the polyphyletism of genera such as Aphanocapsa, Aphanothece, Leptolyngbya, Geitlerinema, Anabaena, and Aphanizomenon as well as the validity of genera such as Microcystis, Planktothrix, and Pseudanabaena with gas vesicles and cells constricted at the cross wall. The results obtained showed the close relationship between Snowella and Woronichinia for which very few sequences exist. The first sequence of Komvophoron appeared poorly related to other available cyanobacterial sequences. Although in a few cases a good agreement existed between phenotypic and genotypic features, there was generally a discrepancy. Strains with identical morphotypes show small differences in the 16S rRNA sequences, which might be related to the different chemical properties of their habitats. The results showed the importance of the polyphasic approach in order to improve the taxonomy of cyanobacteria.  相似文献

We consider host–parasitoid systems spatially distributed on a row of patches connected by dispersal. We analyze the effects of dispersal frequency, dispersal asymmetry, number of patches and environmental gradients on the stability of the host–parasitoid interactions. To take into account dispersal frequency, the hosts and parasitoids are allowed to move from one patch to a neighboring patch a certain number of times within a generation. When this number is high, aggregation methods can be used to simplify the proposed initial model into an aggregated model describing the dynamics of both the total host and parasitoid populations. We show that as the number of patches increases less asymmetric parasitoid dispersal rates are required for stability. We found that the 'CV2>1 rule' is a valid approximation for stability if host growth rate is low, otherwise the general condition of stability we establish should be preferred. Environmental variability along the row of patches is introduced as gradients on host growth rate and parasitoid searching efficiency. We show that stability is more likely when parasitoids move preferentially towards patches where they have high searching efficiency or when hosts go mainly to patches where they have a low growth rate.  相似文献

Entrained phenology patterns of tropical trees are expected to be sensitive to short‐term fluctuations in typical rainfall and temperature. We examined 47 mo of data on the flowering, fruiting, and new leaf phenology for 797 trees from 38 species in the Taï National Park, Côte d'Ivoire. We determined the timing of the phenology cycles in relation to seasonal rainfall, temperature, and solar radiation. Regression analysis was used to examine how variations in rainfall and temperature influenced deviations in the peaks and troughs of phenology cycles. We also investigated whether populations that fruit during periods of community‐wide fruit scarcity were those populations with relatively long‐ or short‐fruiting duration. Flower, fruit, and leaf‐flushing phenophases all exhibited 12‐mo cycles. The broad peak in flowering began with the northward zenithal passing in April and ended with the southward zenithal passing in September. Fruiting peaks occurred in the long dry season, and leaf flushing peaked in the long dry season but continued into the wet season. Deviations from phenology cycles were largely attributable to short‐term fluctuations in rainfall and/or temperature. Fruiting durations of species were related to the mean diameter at breast height. Species with long‐ and short‐fruiting durations contributed equally to fruit abundance during periods of community‐wide fruit scarcity.  相似文献

Entry of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) into target cells is mediated by binding of the surface envelope glycoprotein to the CD4 molecule. Interaction of the resulting CD4-glycoprotein complex with α- or β-chemokine receptors, depending on the biological phenotype of the virus, then initiates the fusion process. Here, we show that primary HIV-2 isolates and biological clones, in contrast to those of HIV-1, may use a broad range of coreceptors, including CCR-1, CCR-3, CCR-5, and CXCR-4. The syncytium-inducing capacity of these viruses did not correlate with the ability to infect via CXCR-4 or any other coreceptor. One cell-free passage of the intermediate isolates in mitogen-stimulated, CD8+ cell-depleted peripheral blood mononuclear cells resulted in the outgrowth of variants with CCR-5 only, whereas the coreceptor usage of late and early isolates did not change. Since HIV-2 is less pathogenic in vivo than HIV-1, these data suggest that HIV pathogenicity in vivo is not directly related to the spectrum of coreceptors used in in vitro systems.  相似文献
