This paper examines the optimum conditions for edible snailsHelix aspersa to be cultured indoors successfully in successivegenerations (originating from the crossing of snails comingfrom different clutches of a previous generation), and the effectof crowding on growth and reproduction in fast-, medium-, andslow-growing snails coming from the same clutches. The timeneeded for the snails to reach marketable size (2532mm)varied from 2.5 to 5 months up to the 7th generation. The timeneeded for the snails to mature and reproduce from 4 to 7 monthsuntil the fifth generation. After the F5 x F5 generation, thefinal size of the snails decreased. The number of eggs did notdiffer statistically among the different generations but thereproductive success (how many snails reproduced/cage) increasedfrom Fl = Fl generation onwards to F5 x F5. In F6 x F6 onlythree (out of 26) snails reproduced and in F7 x F7 none, althoughthe snails remained under controlled conditions for 15 moremonths. Mortality in the different generations varied from 010%up to F5 x F5 but from F6 x F6 onwards increased and reached25%. Concerning the origin of snails, it was found that largersnails (originating from Kyparissia, Peloponnesos) lay statisticallymore eggs (138.40 ± 29.60, N =5) than smaller ones (77.38± 40.42, N=4) (originating from Hania, island of Crete).Hatching success was greater, too. Embryo dormancy of Taxus baccata var. fastigiata is eliminated when cultured continuously in nutritive liquid medium. An equivalent percentage of germination is obtained when the embryos are transferred to agar medium after 8 days of liquid culture. There is no morphological development of the embryo during the period in the liquid medium. But we have ascertained that water-soluble germination inhibitors present in the embryo are leached out into the medium, permitting germination. Germination is totally absent when the embryos are cultured continuously in distilled water, alone or with minerals; incidental in sucrose solution; and maximal when the medium contains sucrose and Ca2+ or K+ ions. The extent of germination on agar medium depends upon the composition of the liquid medium in which the embryos are cultured for the initial 8 days. But this preliminary culture in the liquid medium does not always remove the endogenous inhibitors, irrespective of its composition. This can be achieved only in the presence of sucrose; and this process can be made more effective by the addition of Ca2+ ions. 相似文献

Diurnal flower‐visiting scarabs (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae, Cetoniinae) use visual and olfactory stimuli when locating possible feeding sites. In field trapping experiments in Turkey, testing different colours and floral volatile compounds, a combination of fluorescent yellow colour and a blend of 2‐phenylethanol and (±)‐lavandulol leads to the highest number of Oxythyrea cinctella (Schaum) being caught. Trap catches of O. cinctella with respect to the individually presented visual or olfactory cues are significantly lower than to a combination of the two. The closely‐related O. funesta, a sibling species in the Oxythyrea genus, is also known to be caught by the same colour‐volatile combination. When applied together in a high capture‐capacity trap, the fluorescent yellow colour and the binary floral odour blend may provide a suitable means of monitoring population changes of O. cinctella, which indicates their potential use in agriculture. 相似文献

Conversion of Phosphatidyl Choline to Phosphatidic Acid in Freeze Injured Rye and Wheat Cultivars 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The effect of exposure to freezing temperature (?15°C) on leaf phospholipid composition of hardened rye (Secale cereale L.) and hardened wheat cultivars (‘Miranovskaja 808’, ‘Bezostaja 1’, ‘Short Mexican’ and ‘Penjamo 62’), which differ in their resistance to frost, was investigated. Hardening took place under natural conditions. All the seedlings attained an equal level of linolenic acid in their leaves during hardening. Exposure to freezing temperatures resulted in a loss of phosphatidyl choline and accumulation of phosphatidic acid in the leaves. The ratio of phosphatidic acid to phosphatidyl choline, but not the level of poly-unsaturated fatty acids in the leaves, was related to their ability to survive at low temperatures. As freezing injury is caused by the formation of ice crystals in both extra- and intracellular space, it is probable that the plasma membranes of the investigated cultivars differed with respect to their water permeability. It is concluded that the plants, depending on the degree of their resistance to cold, produce an unknown substance of lipidic nature upon exposure to cold, with the aid of which they adjust the transitional state of their membranes to the prevailing temperature and, at the same time, facilitate the efflux of water from the cells. 相似文献

The ability of prey to detect predators directly affects their probability of survival. Chemical cues are known to be important for predator detection in aquatic environments, but the role of other potential cues is controversial. We tested for changes in behaviour of Rana temporaria tadpoles in response to chemical, visual, acoustic, and hydraulic cues originating from dragonfly larvae (Aeshna cyanea) and fish (Gasterosteus aculeatus). The greatest reduction in tadpole activity occurred when all cues were available, but activity was also significantly reduced by visual cues only. We did not find evidence for tadpoles lowering their activity in response to acoustic and hydraulic cues. There was no spatial avoidance of predators in our small experimental containers. The results show that anuran larvae indeed use vision for predator detection, while acoustic and hydraulic cues may be less important. 1. An artificial glass substratum was incubated in the River Danube for a period of 28 days in order to detect the sequential colonization of microorganisms.
2. Light and fluorescent microscopy showed that microalgae and the picoalgal fraction on the slides increased rapidly over the first 2 weeks of colonization. Diatoms were numerically the most abundant component of the periphyton and their species richness and diversity increased rapidly in the early phase of colonization whereas diversity subsequently increased moderately.
3. Evenness of the diatom community was initially high, lower in the intermediate phase and again higher later on. Succession involving early, intermediate and late colonizer species was observed. Community composition during the first 5 days of colonization was very different from later stages whereas there were only minor changes subsequently.
4. Molecular community analysis by means of terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis of PCR amplified 16S rRNA and 18S rRNA genes pointed to even larger differences between the composition of samples obtained early and late in the period.
5. The number of 18S rRNA and 16S rRNA terminal restriction fragments (T-RF-s) was variable over the colonization period and the fragment patterns of both the bacterial and eukaryotic portion of the microbial community were variable, with most T-RF-s unique to a single sample, suggesting a wide diversity and dynamic properties of periphytic organisms. 相似文献
