Summary A male twin pair discordant in morphological characteristics and HL-A phenotype but concordant in trisomy 21 and the blood group markers is reported.The coincidental occurrence of two rare conditions (nondisjunction and dizygotic twinning) and a high probability of monozygosity (inferred from the blood group findings) gave rise to the question of whether the boys might represent intermediates between dizygotic and monzygotic twins. Postcleavage fertilization can be excluded as a circumstance leading to intermediates since the twins have different maternal HL-A haplotypes.
Zusammenfassung Ein männliches Zwillingspaar wird vorgestellt, das in einigen morphologischen Merkmalen und im HL-A-Phänotypus diskordant, hinsichtlich einer Trisomie 21 und der Blutgruppenmerkmale aber konkordant ist.Auf Grund des Zusammentreffens zweier seltener Ereignisse (nondisjunction und Zweieiigkeit), insbesondere aber auch wegen starker blutgruppenserologischer Hinweiswahrscheinlichkeiten für Eineiigkeit, wird die Frage gestellt, ob die Knaben möglicherweise eine intermediäre Position zwischen Eineiigkeit und Zweieiigkeit einnehmen. Von den Möglichkeiten, die zu einer solchen Zwischenstellung führen könnten, scheidet die einer Befruchtung des Eies erst nach der Furchung aus, da beide Zwillingspartner unterschiedliche mütterliche HI-A-Haplotypen aufweisen.

Summary Budding bacteria from aquatic or terrestrial habitats were found to accumulate ferric oxide hydrate (ferric hydroxide) on their cell surfaces. Metal paper clips served as the source of oxidizable iron. Pure cultures deposited ferric hydroxide during growth on sea water medium at a pH of 7.8, but not in a mineral salts medium of normal ionic strength, of pH 7.2, and without NaCl, although some active strains came from fresh water or soil.Ferric iron deposition was found to be initiated at primary active sites on the cell surface; the hyphae and rods eventually become completely encased by the heavy coat.The presence of iron depositing, budding bacteria in fresh water, brackish water or sea water indicates an ubiquitous distribution of these microorganisms.Actively depositing isolates from marine environments are more closely related to Pedomicrobium than to Hyphomicrobium spp. because of their multiple formation of hyphae from rod-shaped swarmer cells. A taxonomic and cultural study of these new forms is in progress.  相似文献

Summary Since viable intergeneric hybrids between the chicken (Gallus domesticus) and the pheasant (Phasianus colchicus) have been reported, as well as interfamilial hybrids between the chicken and the turkey (Meleagris gallopavo), the chromosome complements of the pheasant and the turkey were compared with that of the chicken. In these three species belonging to the order Galli, the Z-chromosomes appeared to be identical, while the autosomal complements of the pheasant and the turkey differed radically from that of the chicken. Summary Localization of melanin synthesis within the pigment cells of the Cloudman S-91 mouse melanoma was determined by means of a combination of high resolution autoradiography and topographic planimetry. Initial melanin biosynthesis occurred predominantly in the endoplasmic reticulum and associated ribonucleoprotein particles of the melanocytes. By measuring a number of cell organelles and employing the index of relative specific localization it could be shown that the nucleus and mitochondria are of little or no importance in the process of melanogenesis.This investigation has been supported by the following research grants: CA 06548 CB, NIH, PHS and an Institutional Grant from the American Cancer Society (to H. Modulation of acetylcholine (ACh) release from superfused hippocampal slices was examined when the release of ACh was stimulated by exposure of slices to elevated K+ concentration. Evoked release was not sensitive to inhibition by 0.1 microM tetrodotoxin, but it could be inhibited in a dose-dependent manner by a muscarinic agonist (10-100 nM oxotremorine) and a purinergic agonist (10-100 nM 2-chloroadenosine). The alpha-dendrotoxin (100 nM), which selectively blocks voltage-gated inactivating K+ channels in nerve endings, did not affect the release of ACh under resting or depolarized conditions. However, alpha-dendrotoxin reduced the 2-chloroadenosine-induced inhibition of release, but did not alter the oxotremorine-induced inhibition. These results suggest that an alpha-dendrotoxin-sensitive K+ channel may be activated as an obligatory step in the modulation of ACh release by presynaptic purinergic receptor activation, but not in the modulation by presynaptic muscarinic receptors.  相似文献

Regulation of the goldfish neuronal intermediate filament proteins ON1 and ON2 was investigated in a retinal explant system. The synthesis of these proteins in explanted retina decreased with increasing time in culture, despite continuing neurite outgrowth. Thus, ON1/ON2 neurofilament expression is regulated independently from neurite outgrowth. During regeneration of the goldfish optic nerve in vivo, the expression of these proteins increased during the later phase of the process, when growing axons make contact with the optic tectum. The declining synthesis of ON1 and ON2 during neurite outgrowth in culture suggests that factors extrinsic to the retina are necessary to support synthesis of these proteins. Treating retinal explants with retinoic acid stimulated the synthesis of the ON1/ON2 proteins in a dose-dependent manner. This stimulation was effective during a period of declining synthesis of the ON1/ON2 proteins, restoring their synthesis towards initial levels of expression. These results show that retinoic acid serves as a modulator of neurofilament expression in this in vitro model of nerve regeneration.  相似文献
