It is generally assumed that hierarchical phrase structure plays a central role in human language. However, considerations of simplicity and evolutionary continuity suggest that hierarchical structure should not be invoked too hastily. Indeed, recent neurophysiological, behavioural and computational studies show that sequential sentence structure has considerable explanatory power and that hierarchical processing is often not involved. In this paper, we review evidence from the recent literature supporting the hypothesis that sequential structure may be fundamental to the comprehension, production and acquisition of human language. Moreover, we provide a preliminary sketch outlining a non-hierarchical model of language use and discuss its implications and testable predictions. If linguistic phenomena can be explained by sequential rather than hierarchical structure, this will have considerable impact in a wide range of fields, such as linguistics, ethology, cognitive neuroscience, psychology and computer science. 相似文献

Background: As actors with the key responsibility for the protection of human research participants, Research Ethics Committees (RECs) need to be competent and well‐resourced in order to fulfil their roles. Despite recent programs designed to strengthen RECs in Africa, much more needs to be accomplished before these committees can function optimally. Objective: To assess training needs for biomedical research ethics evaluation among targeted countries. Methods: Members of RECs operating in three targeted African countries were surveyed between August and November 2007. Before implementing the survey, ethical approvals were obtained from RECs in Switzerland, Cameroon, Mali and Tanzania. Data were collected using a semi‐structured questionnaire in English and in French. Results: A total of 74 respondents participated in the study. The participation rate was 68%. Seventy one percent of respondents reported having received some training in research ethics evaluation. This training was given by national institutions (31%) and international institutions (69%). Researchers and REC members were ranked as the top target audiences to be trained. Of 32 topics, the top five training priorities were: basic ethical principles, coverage of applicable laws and regulations, how to conduct ethics review, evaluating informed consent processes and the role of the REC. Conclusion: Although the majority of REC members in the targeted African countries had received training in ethics, they expressed a need for additional training. The results of this survey have been used to design a training program in research ethics evaluation that meets this need. 相似文献

In recent experiments by Richardson et al. (2010) [Richardson, T.O., Robinson, E.J.H., Christensen, K., Jensen, H.J., Franks, N.R., Sendova-Franks, A.B., 2010. PLoS ONE 5, e9621.] ant motion out of the nest is shown to be a non-stationary process intriguingly similar to the dynamics encountered in physical aging of glassy systems. Specifically, exit events can be described as a Poisson process in logarithmic time, or, for short, a log-Poisson process. Nouvellet et al. (2010) [Nouvellet, P., Bacon, J.P.,Waxman, D., 2010. J. Theor. Biol. 266, 573.] criticized these conclusions and performed new experiments where the exit process could more simply be described by standard Poisson statistics. In their reply Richardson et al. (2011b) [Richardson, T.O., Robinson, E.J.H., Christensen, K., Jensen, J.H., Christensen, K., Jensen, H.J., Franks, N.R., Sendova-Franks, A.B., 2011b. J. Theor. Biol. 269, 356-358.] stressed that the two sets of experiments were performed under very different conditions and claimed that this was the likely source of the discrepancy. Ignoring any technical issues which are part of the above discussion, the focal point of this work is to ascertain whether or not both log-Poisson and Poisson statistics are possible in an ant society under different external conditions. To this end, a model is introduced where interacting ants move in a stochastic fashion from one site to a neighboring site on a finite 2D lattice. The probability of each move is determined by the ensuing changes of a utility function which is a sum of pairwise interactions between ants, weighted by distance. Depending on how the interactions are defined and on a control parameter dubbed ‘degree of stochasticity’ (DS), the dynamics either quickly converges to a stationary state, where movements are a standard Poisson process, or may enter a non-stationary regime, where exits can be described as suggested by Richardson et al. Other aspects of the model behavior are also discussed, i.e. the time dependence of the average value of the utility function, and the statistics of spatial re-arrangements happening anywhere in the system. Finally, we discuss the role of record events and their statistics in the context of ant societies and suggest the possibility that a transition from non-stationary to stationary dynamics can be triggered experimentally. 相似文献

IntroductionPrevious studies in animal models of osteoarthritis suggest that alendronate (ALN) has antiresorptive and chondroprotective effects, and can reduce osteophyte formation. However, these studies used non-physiologic injury methods, and did not investigate early time points during which bone is rapidly remodeled prior to cartilage degeneration. The current study utilized a non-invasive model of knee injury in mice to investigate the effect of ALN treatment on subchondral bone changes, articular cartilage degeneration, and osteophyte formation following injury.MethodsNon-invasive knee injury via tibial compression overload or sham injury was performed on a total of 90 mice. Mice were treated with twice weekly subcutaneous injections of low-dose ALN (40 μg/kg/dose), high-dose ALN (1,000 μg/kg/dose), or vehicle, starting immediately after injury until sacrifice at 7, 14 or 56 days. Trabecular bone of the femoral epiphysis, subchondral cortical bone, and osteophyte volume were quantified using micro-computed tomography (μCT). Whole-joint histology was performed at all time points to analyze articular cartilage and joint degeneration. Blood was collected at sacrifice, and serum was analyzed for biomarkers of bone formation and resorption.ResultsμCT analysis revealed significant loss of trabecular bone from the femoral epiphysis 7 and 14 days post-injury, which was effectively prevented by high-dose ALN treatment. High-dose ALN treatment was also able to reduce subchondral bone thickening 56 days post-injury, and was able to partially preserve articular cartilage 14 days post-injury. However, ALN treatment was not able to reduce osteophyte formation at 56 days post-injury, nor was it able to prevent articular cartilage and joint degeneration at this time point. Analysis of serum biomarkers revealed an increase in bone resorption at 7 and 14 days post-injury, with no change in bone formation at any time points.ConclusionsHigh-dose ALN treatment was able to prevent early trabecular bone loss and cartilage degeneration following non-invasive knee injury, but was not able to mitigate long-term joint degeneration. These data contribute to understanding the effect of bisphosphonates on the development of osteoarthritis, and may support the use of anti-resorptive drugs to prevent joint degeneration following injury, although further investigation is warranted. 相似文献

Constitutive and inducible terpene production is involved in conifer resistance against bark beetles and their associated fungi. In this study 72 Norway spruce (Picea abies) were randomly assigned to methyl jasmonate (MJ) application, inoculation with the bluestain fungus Ceratocystis polonica, or no-treatment control. We investigated terpene levels in the stem bark of the trees before treatment, 30 days and one year after treatment using GC–MS and two-dimensional GC (2D-GC) with a chiral column, and monitored landing and attack rates of the spruce bark beetle, Ips typographus, on the trees by sticky traps and visual inspection. Thirty days after fungal inoculation the absolute amount and relative proportion of (+)-3-carene, sabinene, and terpinolene increased and (+)-α-pinene decreased. Spraying the stems with MJ tended to generally increase the concentration of most major terpenes with minor alteration to their relative proportions, but significant increases were only observed for (?)-β-pinene and (?)-limonene. Fungal inoculation significantly increased the enantiomeric ratio of (?)-α-pinene and (?)-limonene 1 month after treatment, whereas MJ only increased that of (?)-limonene. One year after treatment, both MJ and fungal inoculation increased the concentration of most terpenes relative to undisturbed control trees, with significant changes in (?)-β-pinene, (?)-β-phellandrene and some other compounds. Terpene levels did not change in untreated stem sections after treatment, and chemical induction by MJ and C. polonica thus seemed to be restricted to the treated stem section. The enantiomeric ratio of (?)-α-pinene was significantly higher and the relative proportions of (?)-limonene were significantly lower in trees that were attractive to bark beetles compared to unattractive trees. One month after fungal inoculation, the total amount of diterpenes was significantly higher in putative resistant trees with shorter lesion lengths than in putative susceptible trees with longer lesions. Thus, terpene composition in the stem bark may be related to resistance of Norway spruce against I. typographus and C. polonica. 相似文献

Carbohydrate structures influence many aspects of cell biology. Manipulating the glycosyltransferase enzymes, that sequentially add carbohydrate moieties to proteins and lipids as they pass through the Golgi and secretory pathway, can alter these carbohydrate epitopes. We previously demonstrated that the eight amino acid cytoplasmic tail of α1,2fucosyltransferase (FT) contained a sequence for Golgi localisation. In this study, we examined the localisation of the closely related secretor type α1,2fucosyltransferase (Sec) which has a smaller, yet apparently unrelated, five amino acid cytoplasmic tail. In contrast to the Golgi localisation of FT, Sec displayed atypical cytoplasmic vesicular‐like staining. However, replacing just the five amino acid tail of Sec with FT was sufficient to relocalise the enzyme to a perinuclear region with Golgi‐like staining. The biological significance of this relocalisation was this chimaeric enzyme was more effective than FT at competing for N‐Acetyl‐lactosamine and thus was superior in reducing expression of the Galα(1,3)Gal xenoepitope.
