Fractionation and characterization of boar seminal plasma spermadhesin PSP-II glycoforms reveal the presence of uncommon N-acetylgalactosamine-containing N-linked oligosaccharides

Lectin mapping, carbohydrate analysis and electrospray mass spectrometry of boar seminal plasma PSP-II glycoforms show that its single N-glycosylation site displays a repertoire of carbohydrate structures consisting of the basic pentasaccharide core Manα 1–6[Manα 1–3]Manβ1-4GlcNAcβ1-4GlcNAc with a fucosyl residue α1-6-linked to the innermost N-acetylglucosamine residue. Other glycoforms display fucosylated hybrid-type or monoantennary complex-type chains, some of which contain α2-6-linked sialic acid. N-acetylgalactosamine, possibly in Galβ1-3GalNAc sequence, is present in most of the PSP-II glycoforms. Co-infection by Cryptococcus neoformans and Mycobacterium aKeikawusvium intracellulare in AIDS

In the observation of various opportunistic pathogens in HIV-positive persons, co-infection by Cryptococcus neoformans together with Mycobacterium avium intracellulare was found if there was a CD4 lymphocyte count as low as 3–20μl. In 1540 HIV-positive patients under treatment at a Berlin hospital (Auguste–Viktoria–Krankenhaus) during 1985–1994, all AIDS-relevant diseases were examined in a multivariate analysis as variables of influence on the manifestation of a systemic Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) infection. The analysis involved data on 36 cases of cryptococcosis and 202 cases with a typical clinical course in whom MAC had been detected at sterile body sites. As significant and independent factors of influence, the following were identified: C. neoformans infection, wasting syndrome, lower age, low CD4 lymphocyte count and preceding Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PcP) prophylaxis. Cryptococcosis ranged first with an odds ratio of 2.75. The concomitant manifestation of cryptococcosis and systemic MAC infection in six patients is shown. Because both opportunists, C. neoformans and avian mycobacteria, may have their common habitat in droppings of defined species of pet birds, a common source of infection deserves further clinical and epidemiological attention. A novel tetracycline-dependent expression vector with low basal expression and potent regulatory properties in various mammalian cell lines.

The tetracycline-dependent expression system has gained increasing popularity for the expression of any gene of interest. Careful choice of the expression vector has been suggested to exploit the full potential of this system. A novel tetracycline-sensitive expression vector based on a modified mouse mammary tumor virus promoter achieved considerably improved regulatory properties in a series of cell lines tested under transient and stable conditions. Therefore, the applicability of the tetracycline-dependent expression system can be largely enhanced by careful adaptation of the expression vector to the host cell line.     

Secular and Religious Nationalism among Young Turkish Women in Belgium: Education May Make the Difference

In this article, I examine the role that education plays in influencing Turkish immigrant girls' choice between a more secular and a more religious nationalism. Their choice can be linked to the existence of strong forms of nationalism within their country of origin and to the concrete reality of the immigrant context. Education proves to play a decisive role for immigrant girls in defining their places within a specific nationalistic worldview and, as a result, within Western society.     

Fetal heart rate variability in growth restricted fetuses.

Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) remains a major problem in perinatal medicine because of the variety of its underlying causes and the prediction of its outcome. Characteristics of heartbeat interval patterns are associated with neuro-vegetative and humoral regulatory processes. Fetal magnetocardiography allows non-invasive assessment of these processes with high precision throughout the second half of gestation. The aim of our study was the analysis of linear and non-linear parameters of fetal heart rate fluctuations to distinguish between IUGR fetuses and a cohort of normal subjects, both pre-selected from heart-rate traces representing a quiet state of activity in the third trimester of gestation.
