A specimen of Ethmorhynchus anophthalmus Meixner 1938 contains a complex of supernumerary genital organs in front of the pharynx. The phenomenon elucidates some traits in the morphogenesis of the atrial organs.

Synthese der Hämolymphproteine und die Aufnahme der Dotterfraktion in die Oocyte unter Actinomycin-Einflu\ (Untersuchungen anMusca domestica)

Zusammenfassung Mit Hilfe von autoradiographischen und elektrophoretischen Methoden wurde die Dottereinlagerung in den wachsenden Oocyten vonMusca domestica untersucht. Sie beginnt nach 30 min im Autoradiogramm sichtbar zu werden. Durch ihre Färbbarkeit und Markierung konnte die Dotterfraktion im Pherogramm von Ovar und Hämolymphe eines mittleren Wachstumsstadiums (Stadium 3) nachgewiesen werden. Nach Abschlu\ der Vitellogenese tritt sie in der Hämolymphe nicht mehr auf. Die Einlagerung der Dotterproteine wird durch Actinomycin gestört, dagegen läuft ihre Synthese nahezu unbeeinflu\t weiter. Die Transporthemmung kann als bisher unbekannter Nebeneffekt des Actinomycins gedeutet werden.

Synthesis of haemolymph proteine and the uptake of the yolk fraction in the oocyte during Actinomycin-treatment. (Studies onMusca domestica)

Summary By means of radioautographic and electrophoretic techniques yolk protein uptake in the growing oocytes ofMusca domestica was investigated. After 30 min yolk protein becomes visible in the radioautograms. By stainability and labeling the yolk fraction could be demonstrated in the pherogram of ovary and haemolymph in an intermediate developmental stage (stage 3). After the end of vitellogenesis it does not appear in the haemolymph. The yolk protein uptake is inhibited by Actinomycin, but the synthesis goes on nearly as normal. This inhibition can be interpretated as a new accessory effect of Actinomycin.

     

A comparative study of the chromosomes in the incipient species of the Drosophila paulistorum complex

Summary Drosophila paulistorum Dobzhansky et Pavan is a complex of six races or incipient species. The races are mostly allopatric, but they are reproductively isolated sufficiently to permit them to exist also sympatrically in some places. The gene arrangements in the chromosomes of the races have been compared by means of examination of the giant chromosomes in the larval salivary glands; 28 strains of all races, and about an equal number of interracial hybrids have been studied.Chromosomal inversion polymorphism has been discovered in all races, even in the Guianan race of which only a single strain is available. Inversion heterozygotes are found in every one of the five chromosomal strands which the species has. Interracial hybrids tend to be heterozygous for more inversions than are present in the strains of the parental races. The Transitional race has however much the same gene arrangements as the widespread Andean — South Brazilian race.With the exception of the Transitional race, and of three other possible exceptions, each race has a collection of its own race-specific inversion polymorphs, not found in the other races. This very striking finding is discussed in connection with the hypothesis which envisages the origin of new species from marginal colonies at the periphery of the geographic distribution area of the ancestral species.The work reported in this article has been carried under Contract No. AT-(30-1)-1151, U.S. Atomic Energy Commission, mostly at the Department of Zoology, Columbia University, New York.     

Configurations resulting from iso-chromatid and iso-subchromatid unions after meiotic and mitotic prophase irradiation

Summary By making use of the chromosomes of Trillium erectum as a model, potential and actual configurations arising from presumed iso-chromatid and iso-subchromatid unions after irradiation of meiotic or mitotic prophase have been studied and analyzed. Diagrams and photographs of various recognizable types of chromatid or subchromatid rearrangements are presented. A minimum of two iso-chromatid unions within an arm of a single chromosome in meiotic prophase, if separated by a single chiasma, can give rise to a monocentric chromosome with a triplicated segment, the middle portion of which is an inversion. A minimum of two iso-subchromatid breaks within an arm at either meiotic or mitotic prophase also can result in the production of a monocentric chromosome containing a triplicated segment. The stage of appearance of dicentrics or bridges arising from chromatid or subchromatid unions in meiotic prophase is influenced by chiasma number and pattern and by the number of strands per chromosome or chromatid. Some of the rearrangements described may have genetic and evolutionary implication of considerable potential importance which has not been recognized previously.Research carried out at Brookhaven National Laboratory under the auspices of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission.     

Das Wachstum infiltrierter Keimlinge

Zusammenfassung Werden Keimlinge vonHelianthus annuus undVicia faba mittels einer Wasserstrahlpumpe mit Wasser infiltriert, so führt dies sofort in allen Organen der Pflanze zu einer sehr starken und mitunter völligen Hemmung des Wachstums. Wirkt der Unterdruck in Luft ein, so daß es hernach zu keiner Wasserfüllung der Interzellularen kommt, so unterbleibt jede Wachstumshemmung.Die Frage nach der Kausalbeziehung zwischen Infiltration und Wachstumshemmung konnte nicht geklärt werden, da die nächstiliegende Annahme, Infiltration führe zu einer Atmungshemmung, durch das Experiment nicht bestätigt werden konnte.Es wird darauf hingewiesen, daß die Zufuhr von Wirk- oder Nährstoffen durch Infiltration eine Methode ist, die in wachsenden Organen nur mit großem Vorbehalt angewendet werden darf, da eine im Wachstum weitgehend gehemmte Pflanze sich in einem anomalen Zustand befindet.Mit 8 Textabbildungen.

Weitere Untersuchungen über Induktion bei Amphioxus

Zusammenfassung Es wird über Versuche anBranckiostoma lanceolatum berichtet, in denen obere Urmundlippe der jungen Gastrula in das Blastocöl gleich alter anderer Gastrulä implantiert wurde.Bei Zuchttemperaturen von 17–20° C übten die entstandenen sekundären Chorden keine Induktionswirkung auf das darüberliegende nichtneuralvirtuelle Wirtsektoderm aus.Bei Temperaturen von 22–24° C trat in der Mehrzahl der Fälle Neuralinduktion ein, womit die Ergebnisse vonTung, Wu undTung (1962) bestätigt sind.Das Ausbleiben der Induktion bei niederer Temperatur bestätigt das Ergebnis V.Ubischs von 1963, wo auch bei einer Zuchttemperatur von 18° C Induktion ausblieb.Es wird die Frage diskutiert, ob die Versuchsergebnisse darauf hindeuten, daßBranchiostoma ein werdendes oder ein reduziertes Wirbeltier sei.Es wird weiterhin auf Grund der gefundenen Temperaturabhängigkeit der sekundären Neuralinduktion die Frage diskutiert, wieweit Induktion in der normalen Entwicklung stattfindet und eine Rolle für die normale Entwicklung spielt oder ob diese nur bei Störung der normalen Struktur des Keimes als ein experimentell erzeugtes Phänomen eintritt.
