Summary The frequency of sister chromatid exchanges (SCEs) in the centromere of chromosomes involved in a whole-arm translocation t(1;19) was evaluated in altogether 911 metaphases of translocation carriers (n=5) and of normal controls (n=6). Comparison of the two groups reveals no significant differences in the SCE rate (x 2=3.06, n f =1). The question as to whether the possible increase of the SCE rate at the translocation point could be detected by light microscopy is discussed. Parameters included in the discussion are the ratio of the SCE frequency at the translocation point to the SCE frequency at any of the possible breakage points in the centromeric region and the number of possible breakage points in the centromeric region.  相似文献

The universe of Molecular Microbial Pathogenesis is filled with many female and male stars. But there are two particularly bright shining supernovae-like stars: the late Stanley Falkow and the very lively and creative Pascale Cossart. These two outstanding luminaries, surrounded by numerous planets, do not only belong to different scientific generations but their splendor also comes from very different scientific concepts. Stanley Falkow, often referred to as the ‘Father of Molecular Microbial Pathogenesis’, made many groundbreaking contributions to this field by addressing almost all important bacterial pathogens. Pascale Cossart, who could be called in analogy the ‘Queen of Modern Molecular Microbial Pathogenesis’ by combining the Microbiology and Cell Biology, concentrates in her similarly impressive scientific work essentially on a single bacterial species which she studied and still studies in great depth: the facultative intracellular bacterial pathogen Listeria monocytogenes—and the vast majority of her most prominent publications deals with this pathogen in almost all facets. It is certainly not an exaggeration to say that she together with her co-workers and collaborators developed this model bacterium into a paradigm among the intracellular bacterial pathogens.  相似文献

Slavemaking occurs in 8 genera or ants belonging to 2 subfamilies. Their raiding behaviour is described and compared. The basic organisation of a raid comprises scouting, recruitment, fight, and brood transportation. These elements can ordinarily be derived from the behaviour of the independent host species. Certain trends in the evolution of recruitment and fighting behaviour are discussed. “Intraspecific slavery”, which has been described by various authors, probably belongs to territorial behaviour. The chromosomes which segregate in anaphase I of meiosis are usually physically bound together through chiasmata. This association is necessary for proper segregation, since univalents sort independently from one another in the first meiotic division and this frequently leads to genetically unbalanced offspring. There are, however, a number of species where genetic exchanges in the form of meiotic cross-overs, the prerequisite of the formation of chiasmata, are routinely missing in one sex or between specific chromosomes. These species nevertheless manage to segregate these non-exchange chromosomes. There are four direct modes for associating achiasmatic chromosomes: (a) modified SC, (b) adhesion of chromatids comparable to somatic pairing, (c) ‘stickiness’ of heterochromatin or (d) specific ‘segregation bodies’, consisting of material structurally different from chromatin. There is also the possibility that the spindlepossibly joining forces with the kinetochores-carries out the faithful segregation of univalents which are not directly physically attached to one another. Finally, amphitelic orientation of univalents in metaphase I and pairing of the chromatids in meiosis II appear to ensure correct segregation as well.  相似文献

The oocyte cell/cell-channel assay was used to identify amino acids involved in the process of cell/cell-channel formation. The expression of the rat liver gap-junction protein, connexin 32, in single oocytes, results in the accumulation of a pool of channel precursors. Upon pairing of such oocytes, cell/cell channels form rapidly from this pool. The rate of formation is affected by thiol-specific reagents and the pH. This suggests the involvement of extracellular cysteine residues in the channel formation process. Two connexin-32 mutants were generated by site-directed mutagenesis in which cysteine residues were replaced by serine. Both mutant connexins were unable to form cell/cell channels. Thus, the cysteine residues appear to play an important role in the channel formation process.  相似文献
