The current approaches to the study of clonal plants are reviewed. Most studies concentrate at the level of the ramet and clonal fragment exploring the “microscopic” view of clonal plants, dealing with the translocation of resources, clonal integration, plasticity of growth etc. The information gained, by this approach can be used in the understanding of higher levels of organization within the clonal system either with the help of spatially explicit modelling techniques, or by using means and distributions of size within a population instead of studying individual ramets separately. Plant scientists use the term clone with two meanings, viz. (a) a set of physiologically connected, but potentially independent ramets, and (b) a set of genetically identical, but potentially physically separated individuals. The overlap of these terms differs between individual plant species, depending on the extent of physical separation of the ramets and the degree of physiological integration between the ramets; the lower the frequency of ramet separation, the closer are the physiological and genetic concepts of the clone. Three critical areas seem to be neglected in clonal plant research: (a) the interrelationship between hierarchical levels in clonal plants, (b) the particular spatial structure of their environment, and (c) the importance of clonal plants in different ecological communities. 相似文献

Objectives
This study uses a virtual framework to examine the left maxillary fragment of the juvenile fossil from Mugharet el'Aliya, Morocco, found in association with an Aterian lithic industry. Previously, this fossil had been ascribed to modern humans or the Neanderthal lineage based on its “archaic”/“Neanderthal-like” features and apparent large size. Here, we conducted a novel 3D shape comparative analysis of the maxillary fragment to clarify its taxonomic affinities with regard to its size and ontogeny.Materials and Methods
Eighty Computed Tomography and surface scans representing ontogenetic samples of Homo sapiens and Homo neanderthalensis were used to capture species-specific differences. The toolkit of geometric morphometrics in combination with surface registration and an elastic iterative closest point algorithm were used to create a dataset of meshes with an identical number of corresponding vertices for the maxillae. Multivariate statistics were applied to Procrustes superimposed coordinates derived from the vertices of this dataset.Results
Our analysis showed affinities of the Mugharet el'Aliya individual with our H. sapiens sample, especially with a subadult individual from Qafzeh. No size-independent affinities with Neanderthals of comparable dental age could be identified.Discussion
Our results add to the evidence connecting fossils from western Asia, especially Qafzeh and Skhul, and the North African Aterian. Furthermore, Mugharet el'Aliya adds to our knowledge of the ontogenetic development of adult morphology that is frequently used to characterize hominin groups, for example, Neanderthals and modern humans. 相似文献13.

The nucleotide sequence of a cDNA prepared from poly(A)+ RNA from Lycopersicon esculentum fruit codes for a protein, M
r 20812, with features representative of the protein core of arabinogalactan proteins. The deduced amino acid sequence resembles that of peptides of arabinogalactan proteins isolated from carrot and rose and is most similar to the sequence of tryptic peptides from Lolium multiflorum (Gleeson et al., Biochem J 264 (1989) 857–862). The similar sequences include a number of Ala-Pro repeats, a feature considered distinctive of arabinogalactan proteins. The amino acid composition is similar to that of the peptide core of the Lolium multiflorum arabinogalactan protein; alanine, serine and proline account for 57% of the polypeptide. The mRNA corresponding to the cDNA sequence was detected in roots, leaves and fruit. The 4LO3311 monoclonal antibody, a new NK-specific reagent recently produced in our laboratory, reacts with spleen cells of 11 mouse strains, most of which do not express the NK-1.1 alloantigen recognized by the PK136 mAb. Among positive strains, the susceptibility of spleen cells to the complement-dependent NK-inhibiting activity of the 4LO3311 mAb was variable but independent of the initial NK cell activity level of cells tested. This property was furthermore not modified after poly(I:C) stimulation. The susceptibility of spleen cells to the in vitro 4LO3311 mAb plus complement treatment is however influenced by the absolute number of 4LO3311+ cells as well as by the density of the corresponding alloantigen at the cell surface. Moreover, it was established that the strain-related variations observed also depended upon the relative size of the 4LO3311 cell subset within the lytic NK cell population. Indeed, when C3H (NK-1.1-4LO3311+) mice were inoculated with the 4LO3311 mAb, the lytic activity of their spleen cells was almost unaltered but 4LO3311-reactive cells were no longer detected in the spleen of treated animals and remaining NK cells were totally resistant to the in vitro 4LO3311 mAb plus complement treatment. These findings indicate that the 4LO3311 mAb identifies a subset rather than all NK cells, even in a NK-1.1- strain. Since a NK-1.1-unreactive cell subset was identified in NZB (NK-1.1+4LO3311-) mice inoculated with the PK136 mAb, the NK-1.1+ cell population is not necessarily responsible for all the splenic NK cell activity in all NK-1.1+ strains. In B6C3F1 hybrid mice, a relatively large subset of NK-1.1-4LO3311- cells was found in addition to those expressing the NK-1.1, the 4LO3311 alloantigen, or both. According to these results, NK cell heterogeneity should thus be taken as an evolving concept whose resolution appears more and more complex with the identification of new NK-specific reagents. 相似文献

The spin labels, 5-doxylstearate, 12-doxylstearate, 16-doxylstearate and 1-oxyl-2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-4-dodecylphospiperidine, have been incorporated into dodecylphospocholine micelles and mixed dodecylphosphocholine/ glucagon micelles. The EPR spectral parameters for the different spin labels and the 1H- and 13C-NMR relaxation rates for nuclei of the detergent molecules indicated that inclusion of up to one spin label molecule per micelle had little influence on the spatial organization of the micelles. Furthermore, the location and environment of the spin labels in the dodecylphosphocholine micelles were not noticeably affected by the addition of glucagon and the 1H-NMR spectra observed for glucagon in mixed spin label/deuterated dodecylphosphocholine/glucagon micelles showed that the different spin labels had essentially no effect on the conformation of glucagon. Approximate spatial locations within the micelle for the nitroxide moieties of the different spin labels were determined from the NMR relaxation rates observed for different nuclei of dodecylphosphocholine. On this basis, the line broadening of individually assigned glucagon 1H-NMR lines by the different spin labels was used to determine the approximate orientation of the polypeptide chain with respect to the micelle surface. Overall, the data indicate that the glucagon backbone runs roughly parallel to the micelle surface, with the depth of immersion adjusted so that polar and apolar side chains can be oriented towards the surface or interior of the micelle, respectively. 相似文献
