Mangroves occur along the coastlines throughout the tropics and sub-tropics, supporting a wide variety of resources and services. In order to understand the responses of future climate change on this ecosystem, we need to know how mangrove species have responded to climate changes in the recent past. This study aims at exploring the climatic influences on the radial growth of Heritiera fomes from a local to global scale. A total of 40 stem discs were collected at breast height position from two different zones with contrasting salinity in the Sundarbans, Bangladesh. All specimens showed distinct tree rings and most of the trees (70%) could be visually and statistically crossdated. Successful crossdating enabled the development of two zone-specific chronologies. The mean radial increment was significantly higher at low salinity (eastern) zone compared to higher salinity (western) zone. The two zone-specific chronologies synchronized significantly, allowing for the construction of a regional chronology. The annual and monsoon precipitation mainly influence the tree growth of H. fomes. The growth response to local precipitation is similar in both zones except June and November in the western zone, while the significant influence is lacking. The large-scale climatic drivers such as sea surface temperature (SST) of equatorial Pacific and Indian Ocean as well as the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) revealed no teleconnection with tree growth. The tree rings of this species are thus an indicator for monsoon precipitation variations in Bangladesh. The wider distribution of this species from the South to South East Asian coast presents an outstanding opportunity for developing a large-scale tree-ring network of mangroves.  相似文献

Childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL), a malignant transformation of the lymphoblasts, is highly responsive to chemotherapy. However, due to certain inadequacy in detection of minimal residual disease (MRD), relapse is a common phenomenon. To address this question, the present review deals with the induction of an unique O-acetyl derivative of sialic acid on a few disease-associated glycoproteins and glycolipids at the onset of childhood ALL, a finding of our group in the last decade. This information has been successfully utilized for diagnosis and prognosis of the disease. Existing literature is included for comparison. Additionally, cell surface overexpression of 9-O-acetylated sialoglycoproteins and antibodies against them present in patients' sera aid the survival of the malignant lymphoblasts and suggest a multifaceted role played by these molecules. Taken together, monitoring these molecules helps not only in unravelling the biology of this paediatric malignancy but also in personalizing the treatment strategies for the betterment of the patient population.  相似文献

The involvement of mitochondrial glycerophosphate dehydrogenase (mGPDH) has previously been established in the production of ROS in prostate cancer cell lines (LNCaP, DU145, PC3 and CL1). The current study demonstrates that the mRNA level of mGPDH in prostate cancer cells is 3.3–8.9-fold higher compared to the normal prostate epithelial cell line, PNT1A. This is consistent with the enzymatic activity and protein level of mGPDH. However, cytochrome c oxidase (COX) activity is 2.9–3.2-fold down-regulated in androgen-independent prostate cancer cell lines. The level of antioxidant enzymes, catalase, MnSOD and CuZnSOD are up-regulated in prostate cancer cell lines. Furthermore, it was observed that the activity of mGPDH is significantly higher in liver tissues from all mice with cancer compared to liver tissues from control mice. These data suggest that the up-regulation of mGPDH, due to a highly glycolytic environment, contributes to the overall increase in ROS generation and may result in the progression of the cancer.  相似文献

We have shown that the domain V of bacterial 23 S rRNA could fold denatured proteins to their active state. This segment of 23 S rRNA could further be split into two parts. One part containing mainly the central loop of domain V could bind denatured human carbonic anhydrase I stably. This association could be reversed by adding the other part of domain V. The released enzyme was directed in such a way by the central loop of domain V that it could now fold by itself to active form. This agrees with our earlier observation that proteins fold within the cell posttranslationally, a process that is completed after release of the newly synthesized polypeptide from the ribosome (Chattopadhyay, S., Pal, S., Chandra, S., Sarkar, D., and DasGupta, C. Attempts at defining and classifying Koro have been undertaken by various researchers over at least the last fifty years without any consensus emerging to date. The occurrence of Koro, not only in different parts of the world but also in association with varied morbidities, has of late diluted its primary identity as a culture-bound syndrome. Further, the DSM-IIIR and ICD-10 provisions to include culture-bound syndromes like Koro are open to various diagnostic options. Consideration was given to have it included in DSM-IV One of the fundamental problems inherent in such attempts is the semantic confusion Koro generates in its basic phenomenological analysis. The present paper deals with some of these issues based on a historical analysis of world Koro literature, and with comments on the future research agendum.  相似文献

Regulatory mode of secretion of proteins was detected for the industrial glycosidase, cellobiase, under secreting conditions (in presence of TCA cycle intermediates like succinate etc.) in the filamentous fungus Termitomyces clypeatus. The titers of key metabolic enzymes were investigated under secreting and non-secreting conditions of growth and compared to the corresponding production of intra and extracellular levels of cellobiase. Results were compared in presence of 2-deoxy-d-glucose, a potent glycosylation inhibitor in the secreting media. Inclusion of 2-deoxy-d-glucose in presence of succinate caused about 10 to 100 times decrease in titers of the metabolic enzymes hexokinase, fructose-1,6-bisphosphatase, isocitrate lyase and malate dehydrogenase leading to increased secretion of cellobiase by more than 100 times. The intracellular concentration of cAMP (86-fold decrease in presence of 2-deoxy-d-glucose under secreting conditions) and turnover rate of proteins also dropped significantly. In this suppressed metabolic state, a 10-fold increase in the titer of the secreted cellobiase was noticed. The results indicated elucidation of carbon catabolite repression like phenomenon in the fungus under secreting conditions which was more pronounced by 2-deoxy-d-glucose. The interdependence between secretion and regulation of metabolic enzymes will help in better understanding of the physiology of these highly adapted organisms for increasing their secretion potential of glycosidases like cellobiase with high industrial value.  相似文献

Finite element analysis is a useful analytical tool for the design of biomedical implants. The aim of this study was to investigate the behavior of temporomandibular joint implants with multiple design variables of the screws used for fixation of the implant. A commercially available implant with full mandible was analyzed using a finite element software package. The effects of different design variables such as orientation, diameter and stem length of the screws on the stress distribution in bone for two different surgical procedures were investigated. Considering the microstrain in bone as a principal factor, the acceptable ranges for screw diameter and length were determined. Parallel orientation of the screws performed better from a stress point of view when compared to the zig-zag orientation. Sufficient contact between the implant collar and mandibular condyle was shown to reduce the peak stresses which may lead to long term success. The distance between screw holes in the parallel orientation was much closer when compared to the zig-zag orientation. However, the stresses in bone near the screw hole area for the parallel orientation were within acceptable limits.  相似文献
