Return to work after coronary artery surgery for angina.

The working habits of 115 consecutive patients who underwent coronary artery vein bypass grafting for angina were assessed. Only 25 patients worked up to the operation. Seven patients were housewives and seven retired. Sixty-eight patients had had to give up work because of their angina pectoris, and most of these had been off work for between six months and two years. After the operation 75 patients returned to full-time work, 59 within two to six months. These 75 patients included 23 of the 25 at work preoperatively and 47 of the 68 unable to work preoperatively. Most patients returned to their original occupation. We conclude that coronary artery surgery, as well as bringing symptomatic relief, increases the patient''s ability to return to and maintain gainful employment.     

Analysis of Crop Losses in Tomato Due to Pratylenchus penetrans

The effects of Pratylenchus penetrans upon yields of ''Veebrite'' tomato were studied at initial soil population densities (P_i) of 360, 2,010, 4,580, and 14,360 nematodes/kg of soil in 20-cm (i.d.) clay-tile microplots. The lowest P_i appeared to stimulate fruit production. Higher P_i''s suppressed fruit production (total weight of marketable tomatoes and numbers of intermediate- and large-sized fruits), in comparison to control yields, the highest P_i resulted in 38% fewer fruits which weighed 44% less. These losses were at least partly due to a delay in fruit ripening, caused by the nematodes, which did not become apparent until the fourth week. Nematode populations in the soil increased at all but the highest P_i; final populations were around 7,000/kg of soil. Nematode populations in roots ranged from 230-590/gm of root at the completion of the experiment. Nematode control by fumigation would definitely be warranted at soil population densities of 2,000/kg or higher; with 500-2,000/kg, the decision to fumigate would depend on soil type and economic and hiological factors.     

Sequential changes in ornithine decarboxylase thymidine kinase, and other enzyme activities in regenerating liver in rats on controlled feeding schedules.

The changes in activity of five enzymes including ornithine decarboxylase (ODC), tyrosine aminotransferase (TAT), thymidine kinase (TK), ornithine aminotransferase (OAT) and serine dehydratase (SDH) in the early stage of the regenerating rat liver have been studied under a controlled feeding and lighting schedule. The first three enzyme activities were stimulated sequentially by partial hepatectomy. The earliest response was observed in ODC activity. A significant increase in this enzyme activity was observed at 2 hrs and the maximal level was at 4 hrs after the operation. TAT began to increase at 4 hrs and the maximal level was at 8 hrs. The TK activity was induced at about 24 hrs and the highest value was at 48 hrs after partial hepatectomy.A significant decrease in OAT activity was observed at 24 hrs after the operation and subsequently. Although a decrease in SDH activity was also observed this decrease did not seem to correlate directly with the regeneration process, since a lowered level of the enzyme activity was also found in the sham operated group.     

Haemorrhagic Septicaemia in the Lamprey Geotria australis Gray

The early upstream migrants of the lamprey, Geotria australis , were occasionally found dead in the field and suffered a very heavy mortality when held in the laboratory. The clinical signs exhibited by dying animals included the production of massive amounts of mucus, petechial haemorrhage of the skin and fins, and both haemorrhage and oedema around the eyes. Necropsy also revealed haemorrhage and oedema in various internal structures and in one case thrombosis and degeneration of blood vessels in the gill. The disease was attributed to infection with Aeromonas hydrophila and Pseudomonas fluorescens which were cultured from the organs of diseased animals. No signs of this disease occurred when the aquaria water was treated with chlortetracycline immediately after the introduction of each new batch of animals.     

Immunohistochemical evidence for a plasma membrane localization of dopamine-beta-hydroxylase in the mouse neuroblastoma

Dopamine-beta-hydroxylase (D beta H), a glycoprotein enzyme which converts dopamine into noradrenaline, was purified from C1300 mouse neuroblastoma and used to raise antibodies in rabbits. Using an indirect immunofluorescence technique the cellular localization of D beta H in C1300 mouse neuroblastoma was compared with that of the superior cervical ganglion. C1300 neuroblastoma D beta H was found to be predominantly localized in the plasma membrane, in contrast to its intracellular localization in the superior cervical ganglion of A/J mice. At least part of the enzyme was found to be associated with the external side of the plasma membrane.     

Effects of vinblastine, oncodazole, procarbazine, chlorambucil, and bleomycin in vivo on colchicine binding activity of tubulin.

Five chemotherapeutic agents which inhibit mitosis caused an $\text{in vivo}$ effect on the colchicine bound to the isolated tubulin from mouse lymphoma L5178Y cells. These effects were examined over a time course of 4, 12, 24, 48, and 72 hours after a single administration of each drug. Vinblastine, oncodazole, and bleomycin decreased the amount of colchicine bound per mg protein; procarbazine and chloroambucil increased the amount bound. All of the drugs except procarbazine required more than 4 hours to cause an effect on colchicine binding and in the case of bleomycin and oncodazole some recovery occurred after 48 hours. The mitotic index was affected by 4 hours by all drugs: procarbazine, chlorambucil and bleomycin caused a decrease; vinblastine and oncodazole, an increase.     

Analysis of a restriction endonuclease map for a rabbit papillomavirus DNA

A restriction endonuclease map was constructed for rabbit papillomavirus DNA. Analysis of the viral genome by cleavage with specific endonucleases, when compared with bovine papillomavirus types 1 and 2 genome maps, revealed similarities among the three genomes. A number of cleavage sites and their relative order on each genome were found to be conserved.     

Postsynaptic membranes in the electric tissue of Narcine: II. A freeze-fracture study of nicotinic receptor molecules

The ventral, postsynaptic membranes of the electroplaques of Narcine were found to containe intramembranous particles similar in location, packing density (about 5700/micron 2), transmembrane position and end appearance to nicotinic acetylcholine receptor-channel molecules. In fixed tissue the particles were limited to the cytoplasmic lamina, while in unfixed tissue an equivalent number were found symmetrically in both laminae. Four populations of particle diameters were observed in each unfixed lamina, even though other morphological evidence indicates the presence of large number of molecules of uniform structure, and biochemical studies of isolated postsynaptic membranes indicate that at least 70% of the membrane protein is receptor-channel protein. Intramembranous particles in dorsal, non-innervated electroplaque membranes, presumably representing Na+, K+-associated ATPase and other channel proteins, were found to have similar characteristics to particles in ventral membranes. Receptor-channel molecules cannot, therefore, be distinguished from other intrinsic membrane proteins by freeze-replication alone.     

The chromaffin granule — Plasma membrane interaction as a model for exocytosis: Quantitative release of the soluble granular content

Bovine adrenal medullary plasma membranes induce the release of soluble components from chromaffin granules in a Ca²⁺ dependent manner. This interaction can be modulated by changing the temperature. Correlation of the concentrations of four released soluble markers (catecholamines, soluble protein, ATP and dopamine-β-hydroxylase) in samples incubated at different temperatures revealed that those markers were liberated simultaneously. Their ratio did not differ significantly from the ratio measured in chromaffin granule lysates. These results suggest the release of the total granular content upon incubation with plasma membranes. Further analysis of the free catecholamines showed a preferential release of adrenalin.
