The ultrastructure of the cryptoprotist Chilomonas paramecium is reviewed and compared to earlier accounts. Distinctive features include a complex cytoskeleton which defines the cell organization and interconnects cell components; trichocysts which resemble those in other cryptoprotists; and two non-photosynthetic plastids. During mitosis there is partial dispersal of the nuclear envelope early in prophase but some remains at the nuclear periphery throughout mitosis. At metaphase chromosomes are arranged on the longitudinal axis of an elongated elliptical nucleus. During telophase the chromosomes decondense and the nuclear envelope reforms. Cell structure is compared with that in other cryptoprotists, and origin of this taxon of algae is discussed.  相似文献

Meiosis is described in thirty-seven taxa ranging from low to high chromosome numbers. Most were regular and bivalent forming.C. flavus subsp.flavus was observed at first anaphase only and was highly irregular.C. speciosus had one or two possible interchange quadrivalents and theC. vernus aneuploid cultivars exhibited multivalents, bivalents and univalents together with some anaphase bridges and fragments. Chiasma frequency is determined here for the first time.  相似文献

Details of mitosis in the chloromonadophycean alga Vacuolaria virescens Cienk. have been studied with the light microscope. The chromosomes are relatively large (up to μ in length at metaphase) and so mitotic stages are readily distinguishable. Chromosomes can be recognized in interphase nuclei as fine strands of chromatin. Contraction of these chromosomes marks the beginning of mitosis and continues progressively until the transition from metaphase to anaphase. Disintegration of nucleoli is complete by late prophase and nucleolar reformation begins in telophase. Some chromosomes exhibit less densely stained regions; centromeres are also present as indicated by their differential staining and by the behavior of chromosomes at metaphase and anaphase. At anaphase progeny chromosomes move apart parallel to the division axis of the nucleus. As anaphase progresses the chromosomes fuse at the polar surface of the progeny chromosome groups. This process continues in telophase and the chromosome groups become more spherical. By the end of telophase nucleolar reformation has begun and the chromosomes have relaxed to their interphase condition.  相似文献

Summary Survivorship and growth of individuals of the annual plant Phlox drummondii were examined in artificial, density-stressed populations composed of five genetically differentiated varieties sown in monocultures and in five pairwise mixtures. All experiments were replicated under two treatments of nutrient availability.Varieties differed significantly in competitive ability, and relative competitive success was shown to be highly habitat (treatment) dependent. In 19 of 20 mixed populations, the relative rankings of pairs of competitors were consistent with a priori expectations based on the morphological and/or historical differences between seed sources, but were not predictable from relative tolerances to density stress in monoculture.Estimated selection coefficients based on relative competitive abilities ranged from 0.04 to 0.94. Despite these large fitness differences among competing varieties, most of the variance in the absolute fitness of individuals resided within varieties. This variation may be mostly environmental. In the high nutrient treatment, where competition for light was most intense, variation in individual plant size was lower in mixed culture as compared to monocultures. Genetic variation for competitive ability may actually lead to greater size uniformity among survivors by promoting an early initiation of thinning, thereby reducing the density stress on survivors.  相似文献

Summary Two varieties of the annual plant Phlox drummondii were grown in pots in the greenhouse. Pots differed in the mixture of varieties, total number of plants, spatial clustering of plants, and soil treatment. The shoot biomass of centrally located target plants was significantly influenced by the varietal composition within a pot, and the pattern of this genetic effect varied with both plant density and soil treatment. Density and soil treatment interacted strongly, with the negative effect of neighbors on shoot growth being significantly greater when soil nutrient concentrations were lower. The varieties differed significantly in their relative allocation of biomass to roots. Relative root allocation was increased in response to both the presence of neighbors and a decrease in soil nutrient availability. These factors did not interact significantly in their effects.Although both plant size and relative allocation to roots were influenced by varietal composition, these genetic effects were small relative to the effects of density and soil treatment. The strong interactions between plant location, plant identity, and soil treatment suggest that relations between neighbors will be very complex in natural populations occupying microgeographically heterogeneous habitats. A more complete understanding of these interactions will be required before realistic dynamic models of natural populations can be constructed.  相似文献

BACKGROUND:The epidemiology of SARS-CoV-2 infection in retirement homes (also known as assisted living facilities) is largely unknown. We examined the association between home-and community-level characteristics and the risk of outbreaks of SARS-CoV-2 infection in retirement homes since the beginning of the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.METHODS:We conducted a population-based, retrospective cohort study of licensed retirement homes in Ontario, Canada, from Mar. 1 to Dec. 18, 2020. Our primary outcome was an outbreak of SARS-CoV-2 infection (≥ 1 resident or staff case confirmed by validated nucleic acid amplification assay). We used time-dependent proportional hazards methods to model the associations between retirement home– and community-level characteristics and outbreaks of SARS-CoV-2 infection.RESULTS:Our cohort included all 770 licensed retirement homes in Ontario, which housed 56 491 residents. There were 273 (35.5%) retirement homes with 1 or more outbreaks of SARS-CoV-2 infection, involving 1944 (3.5%) residents and 1101 staff (3.0%). Cases of SARS-CoV-2 infection were distributed unevenly across retirement homes, with 2487 (81.7%) resident and staff cases occurring in 77 (10%) homes. The adjusted hazard of an outbreak of SARS-CoV-2 infection in a retirement home was positively associated with homes that had a large resident capacity, were co-located with a long-term care facility, were part of larger chains, offered many services onsite, saw increases in regional incidence of SARS-CoV-2 infection, and were located in a region with a higher community-level ethnic concentration.INTERPRETATION:Readily identifiable characteristics of retirement homes are independently associated with outbreaks of SARS-CoV-2 infection and can support risk identification and priority for vaccination.

Frail older adults living in congregate care settings have been at the centre of the COVID-19 pandemic in Canada and internationally.1,2 Long-term care facilities — whose residents are the congregate living population most affected by COVID-19 — have been the subject of immense scientific and public interest during the pandemic.3 Retirement homes (often known as assisted living facilities) have received far less examination despite also housing many vulnerable older adults.47 In contrast to long-term care facilities, retirement homes are private residential complexes that provide a range of supportive care and lifestyle services that are purchased out of pocket by residents or their families.8 Although residents of retirement homes access supportive care services, they are substantially less frail and dependent than residents of long-term care homes.5 Inconsistent regulation of these facilities throughout Canada and the United States has limited research into the epidemiology of SARS-CoV-2 infection in retirement homes.9There are 770 licensed retirement homes in Ontario, Canada’s most populous province, that house more than 50 000 older adults, a population size that approaches the number of Ontario residents of long-term care homes.10 Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in Ontario, the number of positive cases and deaths in retirement homes has continued to grow. As of Apr. 11, 2021, retirement home residents accounted for about 8% of deaths from COVID-19 in Ontario (596/7552).11 Outbreaks of SARS-CoV-2 infection surged in retirement homes during the first and second waves in Canada and the US,11,12 and there has been limited examination in the literature beyond early reports of case surveillance.13We examined the association between home- and community-level characteristics and the risk of outbreaks of SARS-CoV-2 infection during the first wave of the COVID-19 epidemic in Ontario’s retirement homes. Consistent with our previous population-level work in Ontario long-term care homes,2,14 we hypothesized that home size and regional incidence of SARS-CoV-2 infection would be associated with the risk of an outbreak.  相似文献

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is the most common bacterial pathogen infecting the lungs of cystic fibrosis (CF) patients. The transmissible Liverpool epidemic strain (LES) harbours multiple inducible prophages (LESϕ2; LESϕ3; LESϕ4; LESϕ5; and LESϕ6), some of which are known to confer a competitive advantage in an in vivo rat model of chronic lung infection. We used quantitative PCR (Q-PCR) to measure the density and dynamics of all five LES phages in the sputa of 10 LES-infected CF patients over a period of 2 years. In all patients, the densities of free-LES phages were positively correlated with the densities of P. aeruginosa, and total free-phage densities consistently exceeded bacterial host densities 10–100-fold. Further, we observed a negative correlation between the phage-to-bacterium ratio and bacterial density, suggesting a role for lysis by temperate phages in regulation of the bacterial population densities. In 9/10 patients, LESϕ2 and LESϕ4 were the most abundant free phages, which reflects the differential in vitro induction properties of the phages. These data indicate that temperate phages of P. aeruginosa retain lytic activity after prolonged periods of chronic infection in the CF lung, and suggest that temperate phage lysis may contribute to regulation of P. aeruginosa density in vivo.  相似文献

Exposure to adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), including maltreatment and family dysfunction, is a major contributor to the global burden of disease and disability. With a large body of international literature on ACEs having emerged over the past 25 years, it is timely to now synthetize the available evidence to estimate the global prevalence of ACEs and, through a series of moderator analyses, determine which populations are at higher risk. We searched studies published between January 1, 1998 and August 5, 2021 in Medline, PsycINFO and Embase. Study inclusion criteria were using the 8- or 10-item ACE Questionnaire (±2 items), reporting the prevalence of ACEs in population samples of adults, and being published in English. The review protocol was registered with PROSPERO (CRD42022348429). In total, 206 studies (208 sample estimates) from 22 countries, with 546,458 adult participants, were included. The pooled prevalence of the five levels of ACEs was: 39.9% (95% CI: 29.8-49.2) for no ACE; 22.4% (95% CI: 14.1-30.6) for one ACE; 13.0% (95% CI: 6.5-19.8) for two ACEs; 8.7% (95% CI: 3.4-14.5) for three ACEs, and 16.1% (95% CI: 8.9-23.5) for four or more ACEs. In subsequent moderation analyses, there was strong evidence that the prevalence of 4+ ACEs was higher in populations with a history of a mental health condition (47.5%; 95% CI: 34.4-60.7) and with substance abuse or addiction (55.2%; 95% CI: 45.5-64.8), as well as in individuals from low-income households (40.5%; 95% CI: 32.9-48.4) and unhoused individuals (59.7%; 95% CI: 56.8-62.4). There was also good evidence that the prevalence of 4+ ACEs was larger in minoritized racial/ethnic groups, particularly when comparing study estimates in populations identifying as Indigenous/Native American (40.8%; 95% CI: 23.1-59.8) to those identifying as White (12.1%; 95% CI: 10.2-14.2) and Asian (5.6%; 95% CI: 2.4-10.2). Thus, ACEs are common in the general population, but there are disparities in their prevalence. They are among the principal antecedent threats to individual well-being and, as such, constitute a pressing social issue globally. Both prevention strategies and downstream interventions are needed to reduce the prevalence and mitigate the severity of the effects of ACEs and thereby reduce their deleterious health consequences on future generations.  相似文献
