The posterior lateral line (pLL) in zebrafish has emerged as an excellent system to study how a sensory organ system develops. Here we review recent studies that illustrate how interactions between multiple signaling pathways coordinate cell fate,morphogenesis, and collective migration of cells in the posterior lateral line primordium. These studies also illustrate how the pLL system is contributing much more broadly to our understanding of mechanisms operating during the growth, regeneration, and self-organization of other organ systems during development and disease.  相似文献

Seminalplasmin, an antimicrobial protein from bovine seminal plasma, inhibited peptidoglycan synthesis in Escherichia coli in a concentration-dependent manner. The inhibition of peptidoglycan synthesis appears to be a cause rather than a consequence of growth inhibition as it was observed soon after the addition of the antibiotic even in E. coli cells whose growth was totally inhibited by chloramphenicol.  相似文献

The five-hour day visit by the Pope to Coventry Airport on 30 May 1982 required a major exercise in medical planning. First- and second-line first-aid facilities were provided by the British Red Cross Society and the St John Ambulance Association. Hospital facilities were provided in a 30-bed Territorial Army field hospital. The visit attracted a crowd of 350,000; 1424 casualties were seen at first-aid stations and 152 at the field hospital. Twenty patients required transfer to NHS hospitals for further treatment, and one woman died. Most ailments experienced were headaches and effects of heat, blisters, and abdominal symptoms. The field hospital treated a wide range of conditions including cardiac conditions, fractures, premature labour, and acute abdominal emergencies.  相似文献

Pituitary gonadotropins, follicle-stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone, are the key regulators of ovarian folliculogenesis; these are known to be directly or indirectly modulated by many intraovarian factors. Our group has identified and studied one such novel peptide from human ovarian follicular fluid. Its partial N-terminal eight amino acid sequence has been deduced, referred to as octapeptide (OP). OP induces follicular atresia in mice and interferes with normal ovarian function in non-human primates, this action being similar to the native peptide. Thus, in this study, an attempt has been made to elucidate the mechanism of action of the synthetic OP by studying the pathway of follicular atresia in mouse ovary. Changes in granulosa cells were studied using various apoptotic markers by flow cytometry and immunohistochemistry. An increase in apoptotic cell population in atretic- and peptide-treated groups was observed compared with normal controls. Interestingly, both these groups exhibited differences in the apoptotic pathway. Results showed that the mitochondrial pathway was predominant in the atretic group, whereas the Fas-FasL pathway was predominant in the peptide-treated groups. The ultrastructural study also showed apoptotic changes in the OP-treated and atretic groups; the pattern of apoptosis differed at the subcellular level. We describe and develop a difference equation model for the dynamics of malaria in a mosquito population feeding on, infecting and getting infected from a heterogeneous population of hosts. Using the force of infection from different classes of humans to mosquitoes as parameters, we evaluate a number of entomological parameters, indicating malaria transmission levels, which can be compared to field data. By assigning different types of vector control interventions to different classes of humans and by evaluating the corresponding levels of malaria transmission, we can compare the effectiveness of these interventions. We show a numerical example of the effects of increasing coverage of insecticide-treated bed nets in a human population where the predominant malaria vector is Anopheles gambiae.  相似文献

The thermodynamic properties of electron transfer in biological systems are far less known in comparison with that of their kinetics. In this paper the enthalpy and entropy of electron transfer in the purified photosystem I trimer complexes from Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 have been studied, using pulsed time-resolved photoacoustics on the 1 micros time scale. The volume contraction of reaction centers of photosystem I, which results directly from the light-induced charge separation forming P(700+F(A)/F(B-) from the excited-state P700*, is determined to be -26 +/- 2 A3. The enthalpy of the above electron-transfer reaction is found to be -0.39 +/- 0.1 eV. Photoacoustic estimation of the quantum yield of photochemistry in the purified photosystem I trimer complex showed it to be close to unity. Taking the free energy of the above reaction as the difference of their redox potentials in situ allows us to calculate an apparent entropy change (TDeltaS) of +0.35 +/- 0.1 eV. These values of DeltaV and TDeltaS are similar to those of bacterial reaction centers. The unexpected sign of entropy of electron transfer is tentatively assigned, as in the bacterial case, to the escape of counterions from the surface of the particles. The apparent entropy change of electron transfer in biological system is significant and cannot be neglected.  相似文献

We have identified a novel Iroquois (Iro) gene, iro7, in zebrafish. iro7 is expressed during gastrulation along with iro1 in a compartment of the dorsal ectoderm that includes the prospective midbrain-hindbrain domain, the adjacent neural crest and the trigeminal placodes in the epidermis. The iro1 and iro7 expression domain is expanded in headless and masterblind mutants, which are characterized by exaggerated Wnt signaling. Early expansion of iro1 and iro7 expression in these mutants correlates with expansion of the midbrain-hindbrain boundary (MHB) domain, the neural crest and trigeminal neurons, raising the possibility that iro1 and iro7 have a role in determination of these ectodermal derivatives. A knockdown of iro7 function revealed that iro7 is essential for the determination of neurons in the trigeminal placode. In addition, a knockdown of both iro1 and iro7 genes uncovered their essential roles in neural crest development and establishment of the isthmic organizer at the MHB. These results suggest a new role for Iro genes in establishment of an ectodermal compartment after Wnt signaling in vertebrate development. Furthermore, analysis of activator or repressor forms of iro7 suggests that iro1 and iro7 are likely to function as repressors in establishment of the isthmic organizer and neural crest, and Iro genes may have dual functions as repressors and activators in neurogenesis.  相似文献
