The effect of biofeedback-assisted relaxation training on blood pressure and selected biochemical parameters in patients with essential hypertension

The effect of EMG biofeedback-assisted relaxation on blood pressure and selected biochemical parameters was evaluated in 38 patients with essential hypertension. Training consisted of 8 weeks of biofeedback and home practice of relaxation exercises. Mean blood pressure decreased in the experimental group from 144/90 to 133/84 mm Hg while the control group remained unchanged. Statistically significant decreases in the experimental group also occurred in muscle tension levels, in plasma aldosterone, and in urinary cortisol. Both aldosterone and cortisol are secreted by the adrenal cortex. It was concluded that the technique taught to the experimental group produced a reduction in skeletal muscle tension and a decrease in stress responding mediated by the adrenal cortex.This work was supported by the Northwestern Ohio Heart Association Grant No. 93298. It was presented as a citation paper at the meetings of the Biofeedback Society in 1979 and 1980.     

Studies on the cell cycle of Myxobacter AL-1

The properties of seven enzymes were studied in extracts from Myxobacter AL-1. The enzymes were isocitrate dehydrogenase (E.C. 1.1.1.42), succinate dehydrogenase (E.C. 1.3.99.1), alkaline phosphatase (E.C. 3.1.3.1), -glucosidase (E.C. 3.2.1.20), -glucosidase (E.C. 3.2.1.21), -galactosidase (E.C. 3.2.1.23), and N-acetyl-glucosaminidase (E.C. 3.2.1.30). Four of these enzymes: isocitrate dehydrogenase, -glucosidase, -glucosidase, and -galactosidase are cytosolic enzymes. Succinate dehydrogenase was found to be located on the cytoplasmic membrane system, whereas alkaline phosphatase and N-acetyl-glucosaminidase were considered as enzymes which bind the outer membranes resp. the cell wall. During the cell cycle, all enzymes have a pattern of discontinuous activity increase. Succinate dehydrogenase and isocitrate dehydrogenase exhibit a stepwise increase of activity, whereas the other enzymes follow the pattern of a peak enzyme.     

Results from tattooing port-wine hemangiomas. A long-term follow-up.

Nineteen patients who had completed their course of dermatattoo treatment for the camouflage of port-wine hemangioma were evaluated at an average of 3.1 years following completion of treatment. A panel of 7 people evaluated preoperative and postoperative photographs and judged that none of the patients were more than "50 percent improved" in the camouflaging of their hemangioma, and that most of them (15 out of 19) were either "not improved" or "25 percent improved," as compared to their original photographs. We cannot rule out the possibility that this treatment may be effective in adults, as all of our patients at the time of their first treatment were between the ages of 4 and 20 years; and most of them were between 6 and 10 years old. On the basis of this evaluation, we no longer recommend the technique of dermatattoo for camouflage of port-wine hemangioma in patients in the younger age group.     

Application of CNDO2 theoretical calculations to interpretation of the chemical reactivity and biological activity of the syn and anti diolepoxides of benzo[a]pyrene

$\text{CNDO}\text{2}$ molecular orbital theoretical calculations performed on the anti and syn diolepoxides (1 and 2) of the potent carcinogen benzo[a]pyrene provide insight into the molecular structure and reactivity of these mutagenic and carcinogenic hydrocarbon metabolites. Hydrogen-bonded interaction between the 7-HO proton and the epoxide oxygen atom of 2 is shown to be absent in the normal semichair conformation of the tetrahydro ring, (H…O bond distance = 2.7 Å), but is energetically favored in a somewhat distorted puckered structure (H…O bond distance = 1.7 Å). Unexpectedly, internal H-bonding alters the relative electron density at C₉ and C₁₀, leading to prediction of the former as the more electrophilic center. Since all reactions of 2 take place exclusively at C₁₀, transannular H-bonding is concluded not to contribute significantly to the structure of 2. Diolepoxide reactions with both weak and strong nucleophiles and with DNA are discussed and the mechanisms interpreted in terms of molecular structure as determined by the theoretical calculations.     

Meningococcal Disease in California: Epidemiology and Management

Between 1969 and 1975 in California, 1,953 cases of meningococcal disease were reported. For cases reported in 1973, 1974 and 1975, detailed information about chemoprophylaxis of cases and contacts was obtained in addition to demographic and laboratory data. A review of data for the seven years showed a reduction in the case rate from 2.6 to 0.6 per 100,000 population, but this drop was due primarily to a very substantial decline in the military rate from 35.7 to 1.8 per 100,000 population. No reduction was apparent in the case fatality rate. Five groups of associated meningococcal disease cases were identified for a total of nine secondary or coprimary cases among 862 household contacts. Associated cases occurred in 10.4 per 1,000 household contacts—a rate several hundred times greater than that for the general population.The study findings indicate that many physicians are unaware of the following: (1) nonhousehold contacts are at little or no risk of contracting meningococcal disease; (2) prophylaxis should be offered only to household or intimate contacts immediately upon identification of an index case without waiting for test results for meningococcal carriage; (3) valid medical and epidemiologic indications exist for administering prophylaxis to household contacts who are culture negative as well as those who are culture positive; (4) the current drug of choice for prophylaxis is rifampin, but since no drug is completely effective, close medical observation remains the most important factor in the management of household or intimate contacts to meningococcal disease.     

Studies of the diphtheria toxin receptor on chinese hamster cells

Concanavalin A, wheat germ agglutinin and the ovalbumin glycopeptide are all inhibitors of the cytotoxic effect of diphtheria toxin on Chinese hamster cells. Ovalbumin glycopeptide loses its inhibitory property after treatment with β-N-acetylglucosaminidase. This demonstrates the importance of the glycopeptide structure for the mechanism of inhibition. The glycopeptide may be a toxin cell-surface receptor analogue. Diphtheria toxin-resistant mutants were isolated in order to search for cells that might have an altered toxin receptor. One mutant was 10-to 15-fold more resistant to diphtheria toxin than wild-type cells when protein synthesis was measured as a function of toxin concentration. However, when protein synthesis was measured as a function of time at a high toxin concentration, the time before onset of inhibition was identical in the mutant and wild-type cells. We present evidence indicating that the resistance of this mutant can be accounted for by a decreased affinity of toxin for a cell-surface receptor.     

Conversion of type II procollagen to collagen in Vitro: Removal of the carboxy-terminal extension is inhibited by several naturally occurring amino acids,polyamines, and structurally related compounds

Chick embryo sterna, which actively synthesize type II procollagen, were pulse-labeled with radioactive proline; protein synthesis was then inhibited by unlabeled proline and cycloheximide. After the inhibition of protein synthesis, several amino acids, polyamines, or structurally related compounds were added to the incubation medium. The conversion of procollagen, first to two intermediates, pC-collagen and pN-collagen, and then to collagen, was monitored by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide slab gel electrophoresis. The addition of 50 mm β-alanine, arginine, asparagine, glutamine, hydroxylysine, lysine, or ornithine, as well as agmatine, ?-aminocaproic acid, S-2-aminoethylcysteine, cadaverine, canavanine, putrescine, or spermine clearly inhibited the removal of the carboxy-terminal extension and pC-collagen accumulated; the removal of the amino-terminal extension was not affected. The inhibition of the conversion was reversible and unaffected by fetal calf serum. The results suggest that the conversion of type II procollagen to collagen requires at least two separate proteinases for the removal of amino-terminal and carboxy-terminal extensions. The results further suggest that naturally occurring molecules may be used to modulate the rate of conversion of procollagen to collagen, and development of analogs of these compounds may provide the means to interfere with excessive deposition of collagen in diseases with tissue fibrosis.     

The chemical identity of the immunoreactive LHRH-like peptide biosynthesized in the human placenta

Freshly obtained human placental trophoblasts were minced and pulselabeled for 30 min at 37°C with tritiated L-Tyrosine. After homogenisation, the crude extract was centrifuged and deproteinized with 10% TCA. The supernatant was defatted and the peptides concentrated through hydrophobic binding on ODS-silica cartridges. The bound, crude peptide extract was eluted and subjected to gradient, reverse-phase High Performance Liquid Chromatography. The fractions corresponding to the absorption peak of reference, synthetic LHRH were collected and extensively purified to radioactive homogeneity by further multiple HPLC. After digestion with pyroglutamate aminopeptidase, the resulting nonapeptide was manually sequenced by dansyl-Edman degradation. All the incorporated radioactivity was found to reside exclusively in residue number 4 of the nonapeptide; thus establishing for the first time the primary sequence of biosynthetic placental LHRH as: pGlu-His-Trp-Ser-Tyr-Gly-Leu-Arg-Pro-Gly-NH₂, identical to its hypothalamic counterpart.
