模拟四季温度层积对南方红豆杉种子生理性状的影响

为了解濒危物种南方红豆杉(Taxus chinensis var. mairei)种子内含物含量受温度和湿度层积的影响,设置4个季节、2种湿度(16%和24%)基质层积处理,对种子的可溶性糖、淀粉、可溶性蛋白和脂肪等内含物质的变化进行研究。结果表明,不同层积处理下种子贮藏物质的含量有显著变化,春季层积9个月后,可溶性蛋白含量达到最高值;可溶性糖含量呈现降低-升高-降低的变化趋势;淀粉和脂肪含量均随层积逐渐减少。秋季层积9个月后,淀粉含量降至最低。相比于24%湿度,16%湿度的春季、秋季、冬季层积9个月后,脂肪含量均减少较多,说明16%湿度下种子代谢活动更强。春季和秋季的暖温更能促进种子代谢,促进种子形态后熟。夏季温度过高,导致种子生活力下降,夏季层积处理3个月后,种子已经发霉和腐烂。层积过程中,种子内含物在相关酶的作用下,降解为可溶性蛋白、可溶性糖等,为种子萌发提供物质与能量。种子层积时间、温度和湿度及交互作用可作为种子内含物的调控因子。     

Enrichment of homoacetogens converting H2/CO2 into acids and ethanol and simultaneous methane production

An anaerobic granular sludge was enriched to utilize H₂/CO₂ in a continuous gas-fed up-flow anaerobic sludge reactor by applying operating conditions expected to produce acetic acid, butyric acid, and ethanol. Three stages of fermentation were found: Stage I with acetic acid accumulation with the highest concentration of 35 mM along with a pH decrease from initial 6 to 4.5. In Stage II, H₂/CO₂ was replaced by 100% H₂ to induce solventogenesis, whereas butyric acid was produced with the highest concentration of 2.5 mM. At stage III with 10 µM tungsten (W) addition, iso-valeric acid, valeric acid, and caproic acid were produced at pH 4.5–5.0. In the batch tests inoculated with the enriched sludge taken from the bioreactor (day 70), however, methane production occurred at pH 6. Exogenous 15 mM acetate addition enhanced both the H₂ and CO₂ consumption rate compared to exogenous 10, 30, and 45 mM acetate by the enriched sludge. Exogenous acetate was failed to be converted to ethanol using H₂ as electron donor by the enriched acetogens.

Effect of phenolic compounds on abscisic acid-induced stomatal movement: Structure – activity relationship

Application of abscisic acid (ABA) brings about stomatal closure within 30 min in epidermal peels of Vicia faba . A number of phenolic compounds antagonise the effect of ABA. Derivatives of benzoic acid, cinnamic acid, coumarin and flavonoids have been studied in order to establish structure – activity relationship. Derivatives of benzoic acid reverse the ABA effects. Coumarin, esculetin and three hydro derivatives of cinnamic acid fail to show the anti-ABA activity. Thus, the presence of parahydroxyl group and double bond in the side chain is necessary for anti-ABA activity.     

Role of puncture and aspiration in expectant management of simple ovarian cysts: a randomised study.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the potential of expectant management for simple ovarian cysts diagnosed by transabdominal or transvaginal ultrasonography. To compare the results of needle aspiration with those achieved with simple observation. DESIGN: Randomised trial. SETTING: Hospital department of obstetrics and gynaecology. SUBJECTS: 278 women with simple cysts randomly allocated to simple observation (143) or ultrasound guided fine needle aspiration (135) between 1990 and 1994. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Resolution of cyst or development of malignancy. RESULTS: After six months 269 were available for follow up. The rate of resolution was 46% (59/128) with aspiration and 44.6% (63/141) with observation. Only the diameter of the cyst (P < 0.0001) was a significant independent prognostic factor for resolution in a multivariate analysis. Age and treatment had no significant effect. One woman was subsequently found to have borderline malignant changes on histopathological examination. Her cyst was detected by transabdominal ultrasonography. CONCLUSIONS: Expectant management for up to six months does not cause risks for the patients and allows spontaneous resolution in over a third of cases, avoiding the costs and risks of unnecessary surgery. Aspiration does not provide better results than simple observation.     

Human Platelet Sulfotransferase Shows Seasonal Rhythms

Our study aimed to investigate the possible presence of seasonal changes in platelet phenolsulfotransferase (ST) in a group of 20 healthy, drug-free subjects of both sexes and between 24 and 37 years of age. Blood samples were taken four times a year in the period immediately following the equinoxes and the solstices. The results showed that both STs underwent seasonal changes: the lowest values were found in autumn and in winter, and the highest in the summer. A positive correlation between the two STs and the length of the photoperiod was observed in winter, whereas in the spring we detected a negative correlation between the TL ST and the photoperiod length. Future studies should clarify whether platelet ST of patients with mood disorders shows a similar seasonality.     

A common β hexosaminidase gene mutation in adult Sandhoff disease patients

-Hexosaminidase gene mutations were analyzed in two adult-onset Sandhoff disease Italian patients by PCR analysis of a common known mutation (5) and by heteroduplex analysis of genomic and RT-PCR DNA fragments, covering the whole gene. The patients' genotypes were 5/C1214T, and G890A/C1214T, respectively. As mutation C1214T (Pro405Leu) is also present in the other two late-onset cases so far described, we suggest that C1214T is a common mutation in this type of Sandhoff disease. Mutation G890A (Cys297Tyr) is a novel mutation which presumably causes altered processing of the pro chain.     

Structural study of circulating thymic factor: a peptide isolated from pig serum. I. Isolation and purification.

A circulating thymic factor (FTS) has been characterized by a bioassay based on its ability to render theta-negative rosette-forming cells theta-positive and azathioprine-sensitive. FTS was sequentially purified and finally isolated from 1000 liters of pig serum by ultrafiltration, gel filtration, and ion exchange chromatography. Its amino acid composition and apparent molecular weight estimated by Sephadex G-25 chromatography, indicate that FTS is a nonapeptide of composition lysine, aspartic acid (or asparagine), serine 2, glutamic acid (or glutamine) 2, glycine 2, and alanine.
