The distribution, density and uptake of twenty elements by aquatic invertebrates inhabiting a drainage system, that received excessive coal ash effluent (275 JTU of turbidity) at one end and thermal loading (44.5°C) at the other end, was studied for 15 months. The ash settling basin filled during the first eight months of sampling which resulted in the release of ash effluent directly into the receiving system. Density of invertebrates was lowest in the 300 m stream between the ash basin and swamp and highest 1200 m beyond the stream-swamp confluence where ash influence was minimal. Invertebrate density was lowest in the stations where turbidity from ash effluent was greatest. The most tolerant invertebrates to coal ash stress were odonates (Libellula sp. and Enallagma sp.), crayfish (Procambarus sp.), amphipods (Gammarus sp.) and gastropods (Physa. sp.), and midges (Chironomidae) when the basin was filling. During the period of ash overflow, all groups were either reduced in numbers or absent. In the thermally stressed station, Libellula sp. was the predominant invertebrate sampled when water temperature ranged from 25.5–45.5°C (257-1=28.7°C) all aquatic invertebrates were limited in numbers and density when temperature exceeded the lower and upper ranges of 10.0–38.0°C.This research was supported by AEC Contract AT (38-1-824)This research was supported by AEC Contract AT (38-1-824)  相似文献

Seasonally acclimatized citrus blackfly (CBF),Aleurocanthus woglumi Ashby, and its parasite,Amitus hesperidum Silv. were exposed to extreme temperatures for 3-hour periods and survivorship measured. In summer experiments, the LD50 for CBF adults and 1st instar nymphs occurred between 40° and 45°C. The LD50 forA. hesperidum adults occurred between 35° and 40°C and increased with decreased humidity, although some adults could continue to emerge from parasitized CBF up to 45°C. In winter experiments, the LD50 for CBF eggs and adults occurred between ?5° and ?10°C and for other CBF stages between ?10° and ?15°C. The LD50 for adultA. hesperidum, and survival and emergence of the parasites from CBF both occurred between ?10° and ?15°C. Comparing data from the 2 seasons shows that adults are the most temperature sensitive stage of CBF and the parasite is more temperature sensitive than CBF, especially at higher temperatures. Correlating lethal temperature data with field meteorological conditions shows that short-term temperature exposures cannot be expected to stop the potential spread of CBF orA. hesperidum through Florida.  相似文献

The adrenal homologue of C. batrachus is distributed around the postcardinal vein in the pronephric head kidney. The cortical cells are round or oval in shape. They showed positive reaction for total lipid, glycogen and ascorbic acid. Their intense delta5-3beta HSDH activity indicates their capacity for steroid biosynthesis. In addition, the cortical cells of C. batrachus exhibited strong G-6-PD, NADPH diaphorase, NADH diaphorase, MAO and weak SDH and LDH activity. The presence of MAO suggests the aminergic control of the adrenal in this species and the silver positive fibres seen the cortical cells were hypertrophied, degranulated and the lipid content was also decreased. The chromaffin or medullary cells were distributed in groups among the cortical cells. They are largely oval or angular in shape. They react positively to ferric ferricyanide, chromaffin and argentaffin reactions and ascorbic acid test.  相似文献

Partial acid hydrolyzates of the extracellular polysaccharide from Porphyridiunm cruentum yield three disaccharides and two uronic acids. These constitute all of the uronic acid in the polymer. The novel disaccharides are 3-O-(α-D-glucopyranosyl- uronic acid)-L-galactose, 3-O-(2-O-methyl-ca-glucopyranosyluronic acid)-D- galactose, and 3-0-(2-0-methyl-a-D-glucopyranosyluronic acid)-D-glucose. The polyanion of high molecular weight contains D- and L-galactose, xylose, D-glucose, D-glucuronic acid and 2-O-methyl-D-glucuronic acid, and sulfate in molar ratio (relative to D-glucose) of 2.12:2.42:1.00:1.22:2.61. Preliminary periodate-oxidation studies suggest that the hexose and uronic acids are joined to other residues by ( 1→3) glycosidic linkages. About one-half of the xylose residues are (1→3)-linked.  相似文献

The relative levels of multiple RNA polymerases were determined in soybean (Glycine max L. var. Wayne) hypocotyl during various stages of development. The meristematic region of the hypocotyl contains more total polymerase activity per gram fresh weight and a greater proportion of polymerase I relative to II than the differentiated regions. The fully elongated tissue comprising the lower half of the hypocotyl contains mainly RNA polymerase II. The hook region contains a polymerase activity peak which is completely sensitive to alpha-amanitin and partially sensitive to rifamycin SV. This peak is not detectable in other regions of the hypocotyl. Polymerase I is reproducibly separated into a major and a minor component, both being resistant to alpha-amanitin. The two components elute at salt concentrations of 0.2 m and 0.23 m KCl, respectively, while the alpha-amanitin-sensitive polymerase (II) elutes at 0.3 m KCl. The polymerase activity peak which is detectable only in the hook region elutes at approximately 0.5 m KCl. Polymerase levels were also determined in water-stressed tissue and in tissue which was harvested after three days of growth instead of the usual four days.  相似文献

Since ethylene application did not induce ripening in detached fruits of the nonripening mutant rin we initiated studies to determine possible involvement of other hormones. We proposed that the lack of ripening in mutant rin tomato fruit may result from a lack of abscisic acid or from excessive endogenous levels of cytokiuin. Application of abscisic acid (3 x 10(-5)m and 10(-3)m) to detached fruits of a normal strain (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill. cv. ;Rutgers') reduced the time to initiate ripening by about 50%. This acceleration of the onset of ripening appeared not to be due to an increased rate of ethylene production. Abscisic acid did not alter respiration or ethylene production or induce ripening in rin fruit. Ripening in Rutgers fruit was not influenced by treatment with 6-benzyladenine (4.44 x 10(-6)m, 4.44 x 10(-5)m or 1.8 x 10(-4)m). Fruits of the mutant rin showed no response to exogenous BA. However, senescence rates of leaf disks of both Rutgers and rin were significantly inhibited by as little as 10(-7)m exogenous benzyladenine. The results are discussed in relation to previous studies of the physiology of rin fruits and it is concluded that endogenous levels of ABA and cytokinins do not account for the lack of ripening in rin fruit.  相似文献

Erythrocyte producing tissues of genetically anemicW/W v mice were completely populated and the anemic mice were permanently cured by marrow cell grafts from donors that differed at theEa-2 locus. Circulating erythrocytes contained ≧ 80% donor Ea-2 antigen and ≧ 90% donor hemoglobin. Population occurred without immunosuppressive treatment. No sign of graft-versus-host reaction was observed, although donors were congenic with one parent strain of the F1 hybrid recipients. When partially congenic donors carrying the T6 chromosome marker were used, the immune systems of curedW-anemic mice were populated to an appreciable extent by donor cells. The dependence of cure upon route of injection and the persistence of functioning donor type cells across the strong immunological barrier of the Ea-2 system are discussed.  相似文献
