Use of biological methods in the analysis of the purinergic activity of etimizol

To analyse etimizol purinergic activity, methods of biological analysis were applied using isolated smooth muscle strips of the guinea-pig caecum and developing embryo cultures of the sea urchin (Strongylocentrotus intermedius). Stimulating etimizol action in 10(-8)-10(-12) M concentration was observed on embryonal development in the sea urchin to be eliminated by co-action of etimizol and P1-purinoceptor antagonist theophylline. The analogous action of the preparations was established using isolated smooth muscle strips of the guinea-pig caecum.     

Effect of the cyclic nucleotide level on the degree of carotenoid pigment formation in the mycelial cells of Neurospora crassa

The relation between the content of cyclic nucleotides and the rate of formation of carotenoid pigments in the Neurospora crassa mycelium cells was investigated. Light derepression of the carotenoid synthesis during the photoinduction lag-period induced a transient decrease of the cAMP content. The intracellular cAMP content was in negative correlation with the constitutive level of carotenoid pigments. The cGMP content remained unchanged during the photoinduction lag-period and showed no correlation with the constitutive level of carotenoids in N. crassa cells.     

Lipid peroxidation and the functioning of the Ca pump of the sarcoplasmic reticulum of skeletal muscle in hypercholesterolemia

During prolonged hypercholesterolemia (HCh), there was a reduction in the efficacy of Ca-pump function of the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) of rabbit skeletal muscles, an increase in cholesterol content, and intensification of lipid peroxidation in SR membranes. Supplementation of the cholesterol-rich diet with alpha-tocopherol effectively prevented dysfunction of the SR Ca-pump and reduced the enhanced LPO level in SR membranes without having any effect on cholesterol content in blood serum and SR membranes. The increase in the LPO level seems likely to be primarily responsible for abnormalities in the SR Ca-pump during HCh.
