The Okavango Delta depends on water quantity and quality to sustain its ecosystem services. Whereas many studies have been carried out on its hydrology, few have been done on water quality in the delta. Water pH, electrical conductivity (EC), dissolved oxygen (DO), turbidity, total suspended solids (TSS) and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) were monitored at 10 sites along the Okavango–Boro–Thamalakane–Lake Ngami system almost fortnightly from June 2008 to June 2010. Water quality in the delta was generally good, despite high evapotranspiration rates which would normally produce very saline waters. Electrical conductivity and water temperature increased with distance from Mohembo to Lake Ngami, the former most likely due to evapoconcentration. In contrast, pH, DO, turbidity and TSS decreased with distance from Mohembo to Boro at the lower end of the seasonal floodplain, before increasing again to Lake Ngami. Dissolved oxygen and TSS most likely declined due to biological uptake and particle sedimentation, respectively. Strong and significant relationships were observed between TSS and turbidity and between DOC and EC, indicating that turbidity and EC could be useful proxies for routine estimations of TSS and DOC, respectively, in the delta.  相似文献

We describe for the first time the sexual behavior and the courtship song of males of the African fly Zaprionus indianus (Gupta), a recent invader of South America. The male courtship song is formed by monocyclic pulses and the courtship behavior is simple when compared to that of species of Drosophila. Two interpulse interval (IPI) distributions were observed: pre-mounting and mounting. No significant difference was observed between the pre-mounting IPIs of males that descended from three geographical populations from South America. We also observed the songs produced by females and the homosexual behavior exhibited by males. A sequence of bursts is produced by females as a refusal signal against males, while males emit a characteristic song that identifies sex genus, which differs from the courtship song. The short courtship and mating latencies recorded reveal vigorous males and receptive females, respectively.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of cadmium-induced peroxidative damage to rat liver, heart, and spleen. Sprague-Dawley rats were injected subcutaneously with a single dose of 25, 125, 500, or 1250 μg Cd/kg and evaluated 6, 12, 24, or 72 h later. Liver, heart, and spleen were analyzed for lipid peroxidation and Fe, Cu, Zn, Se, and Cd concentrations. Data showed that Cd produced enhanced lipid peroxidation in the liver, heart, and spleen. These Cd-induced changes were accompanied by a significant rise in liver, heart, and spleen Fe and Cu, and a fall in spleen Zn and liver, heart, and spleen Se. Concurrent treatment with Se and Cd reduced the Cd-induced alterations in liver, heart, and spleen peroxidation and essential metal levels. Data suggest that lipid peroxidation is associated with cadmium toxicity and that Se was found effective in preventing lipid peroxidation.  相似文献

Background  

Gluten proteins can induce celiac disease (CD) in genetically susceptible individuals. In CD patients gluten-derived peptides are presented to the immune system, which leads to a CD4+ T-cell mediated immune response and inflammation of the small intestine. However, not all gluten proteins contain T-cell stimulatory epitopes. Gluten proteins are encoded by multigene loci present on chromosomes 1 and 6 of the three different genomes of hexaploid bread wheat (Triticum aestivum) (AABBDD).  相似文献

Ion exchange chromatography, one of the major procedures for protein purification, seldom provides single-step purification due to a lack of specific affinity. In this work, a novel and simple method called “back flush” (i.e., reversing the flow direction of elution relative to that of sample loading) was developed to achieve single-step purification on an ion exchanger. Tips for the conditions and operation by back flush are presented. Our study demonstrates, for the first time, the feasibility and dramatic improvement for protein purification by the back-flush method.  相似文献

A series of pyrazolo[3,4-d]pyrimidines were synthesized and their antiviral activity was evaluated in a plaque reduction assay. It is very interesting that this class of compounds provide remarkable evidence that they are very specific for human enteroviruses, in particular, coxsackieviruses. Some derivatives proved to be highly effective in inhibiting enterovirus replication at nanomolar concentrations. SAR studies revealed that the phenyl group at the N-1 position and the hydrophobic diarylmethyl group at the piperazine largely influenced the in vitro antienteroviral activity of this new class of potent antiviral agents. It was found that the pyrazolo[3,4-d]pyrimidines with a thiophene substituent, such as compounds 20-24, in general exhibited high activity against coxsackievirus B3 (IC(50) = 0.063-0.089 microM) and moderate activity against enterovirus 71 (IC(50) = 0.32-0.65 microM) with no apparent cytotoxic effect toward RD (rhabdomyosarcoma) cell lines (CC(50) > 25 microM).  相似文献

Phorbol-12-myristate-13-acetate (PMA) induces megakaryocytopoeisis in human erythroleukemia (HEL) cells which is characterized by the increase in cell size, increase in nuclear polyploidization and expression of megakaryocyte marker, CD41. However, upon treatment with 100 nM of selective prostacyclin (IP) agonist beraprost inhibits the induced differentiation. Moreover, selective non-prostanoid IP agonist, BMY 45778 prevents PMA induced megakaryocytopoeisis in HEL cells similarly, while prostaglandin E(2) and specific EP(3) agonist sulprostone have no effect. Thus, IP receptor is involved. Furthermore, adenylate cyclase activator forskolin and cAMP analog dibutyryl-cAMP also prevented PMA induced megakaryocytopoeisis in HEL cells. Thus, IP agonists inhibition of PMA induced megakaryocytopoeisis in HEL cells may involve a cAMP dependent pathway.  相似文献

We used the repetitive character of transposable elements to isolate a non-LTR retrotransposon in Drosophila subobscura. bilbo, as we have called it, has homology to TRIM and LOA elements. Sequence analysis showed a 5' untranslated region (UTR), an open reading frame (ORF) with no RNA-binding domains, a downstream ORF that had structural homology to that of the I factor, and, finally, a 3' UTR which ended in several 5-nt repeats. The results of our phylogenetic and structural analyses shed light on the evolution of Drosophila non-LTR retrotransposons and support the hypothesis that an ancestor of these elements was structurally complex.   相似文献

The A2A adenosine receptor (A2AR) is a G‐protein–coupled receptor. We previously reported that the C terminus of the A2AR binds to translin‐associated protein X (TRAX) and modulates nerve growth factor (NGF)‐evoked neurite outgrowth in PC12 cells. Herein, we show that neuritogenesis of primary hippocampal neurons requires p53 because blockage of p53 suppressed neurite outgrowth. The impaired neuritogenesis caused by p53 blockage was rescued by activation of the A2AR (designated the A2A rescue effect) in a TRAX‐dependent manner. Importantly, suppression of a TRAX‐interacting protein (kinesin heavy chain member 2A, KIF2A) inhibited the A2A rescue effect, whereas overexpression of KIF2A caused a rescue effect. Expression of a KIF2A fragment (KIF2A514), which disturbed the interaction between KIF2A and TRAX, blocked the rescue effect. Transient colocalization of TRAX and KIF2A was detected in the nucleus of PC12 cells upon NGF treatment. These data suggest that functional interaction between KIF2A and TRAX is critical for the A2A rescue effect. Moreover, p53 blockage during NGF treatment prevented the redistribution of KIF2A from the nucleus to the cytoplasmic region. Expression of a nuclear‐retained KIF2A variant (NLS‐KIF2A) did not rescue the impaired neurite outgrowth as did the wild‐type KIF2A. Therefore, redistribution of KIF2A to the cytoplasmic fraction is a prerequisite for neurite outgrowth. Collectively, we demonstrate that KIF2A functions downstream of p53 to mediate neuritogenesis of primary hippocampal neurons and PC12 cells. We present prenatal diagnosis of de novo 22q11.2 microdeletion syndrome using uncultured amniocytes in a pregnancy with conotruncal heart malformations in the fetus. We discuss the genotype–phenotype correlation and the consequence of haploinsufficiency of TBX1, COMT, UFD1L, GNB1L and MED15 in the deleted region. We review the literature of chromosomal loci and genes responsible for conotruncal heart malformations and tetralogy of Fallot.  相似文献
