This study characterizes the dynamics of sex reversal in the marbled swamp eel, Synbranchus marmoratus (Osteichthyes: Synbranchidae), a diandric hermaphrodite, within the context of managing species with complex sex allocations. Monthly sampling in Marechal Dutra Reservoir, northeastern Brazil, was conducted using metal eel traps from July, 2013, to June, 2014, during which a total of 288 individuals were captured. Morphological and histological comparisons of gonads identified four sex types: primary males (n = 18), females (n = 197), transitional individuals (n = 30), and secondary males (n = 43). Primary males were smallest, ranging 18–32 cm total length. Females were numerically dominant throughout the 1‐year sampling period, and ranged 20–60 cm. Transitional individuals ranged 32–60 cm, and secondary males ranged 46–74 cm. The otolith‐based age of 52 specimens ranged 0.5 to 5+ year. Primary males were only observed at ages 0.5 and 1, and transitional individuals were only observed at ages 3 and 4 during the female‐to‐secondary‐male transition, supporting the existence of two types of individuals: gonochoristic males and protogynous hermaphrodites. This observation was further supported by histological observations of deteriorating ovarian tissue in transitional individuals. Given the length of time required for individuals to attain secondary male status, this species appears to be particularly vulnerable to over‐exploitation. Comparisons with results from other studies suggest sex allocations and adult size distributions vary substantially within this species’ range, adding complexity to management efforts.  相似文献

The mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR) is an evolutionarily conserved protein kinase that regulates growth and metabolism. mTOR is found in two protein complexes, mTORC1 and mTORC2, that have distinct components and substrates and are both inhibited by rapamycin, a macrolide drug that robustly extends lifespan in multiple species including worms and mice. Although the beneficial effect of rapamycin on longevity is generally attributed to reduced mTORC1 signaling, disruption of mTORC2 signaling can also influence the longevity of worms, either positively or negatively depending on the temperature and food source. Here, we show that loss of hypothalamic mTORC2 signaling in mice decreases activity level, increases the set point for adiposity, and renders the animals susceptible to diet‐induced obesity. Hypothalamic mTORC2 signaling normally increases with age, and mice lacking this pathway display higher fat mass and impaired glucose homeostasis throughout life, become more frail with age, and have decreased overall survival. We conclude that hypothalamic mTORC2 is essential for the normal metabolic health, fitness, and lifespan of mice. Our results have implications for the use of mTORC2‐inhibiting pharmaceuticals in the treatment of brain cancer and diseases of aging.  相似文献

The prevalence of obesity increases with age in humans and in rodents. Age‐related obesity is characterized by leptin resistance and associated with heightened risk of metabolic disorders. However, the effect of leptin resistance per se has been difficult to disentangle from other effects of aging. Here we demonstrate that celastrol, a natural phytochemical that was previously shown to act as a leptin sensitizer, induces weight loss in aged animals, but not in young controls. Celastrol reduces food intake and lowers fasting glucose without affecting energy expenditure. Unexpectedly, administration of celastrol just before the dark period disrupted circadian rhythms of sleep and activity. This regimen was also associated with loss of lean mass an outcome that would not be desirable in elderly patients. Adjusting the timing of celastrol administration by 12 hr, to the beginning of the light period, avoided interference with circadian rhythms while retaining the reductions in body weight and adiposity. Thus, targeting leptin signaling is an effective strategy to ameliorate age‐associated weight gain, and can profoundly impact circadian rhythms.  相似文献

The Neotropical red discus fish, Symphysodon discus, originates from the Amazonian basin and has a discoid body. Although this species is popularly used in aquaria and is exported as an ornamental fish, it has not been intensively studied. The purpose of this work was to study the morphological and histological aspects of the ovarian development in the red discus. Forty females of S. discus of varying body sizes and different stages of gonadal development were used in this study. The ovaries were weighed and examined macroscopically in order to observe the maturation stages. Histological staining of hematoxilin-eosin was used for microscopic observations of the ovaries. Macroscopic observations showed immature, maturing, mature and partially spent stages of ovarian development. Microscopic examination of the ovaries revealed five stages and five phases of ovarian development. The ovaries of the mature females showed all the different phases of oocyte development, indicating the multiple spawning habit of this species.  相似文献

Mesogenic vaccine strains of Newcastle disease virus (NDV) are widely used in many countries of Asia and Africa to control the Newcastle disease of poultry. In India, the mesogenic strain R2B was introduced in 1945; it protects adult chickens that have been preimmunized with a lentogenic vaccine virus and provides long-lasting immunity. In this article, we report the complete genome sequence of the hitherto unsequenced Indian vaccine virus strain R2B. The viral genome is 15,186 nucleotides in length and contains the polybasic amino acid motif in the fusion protein cleavage site, indicating that this vaccine strain has evolved from a virulent virus. Phylogenetic analysis of this mesogenic vaccine virus classified it with the viruses belonging to genotype III of the class cluster II of NDV.  相似文献

Cardamom thrips (Sciothrips cardamomi) is a major insect pest of cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum) causing severe economic losses to the crop in all cardamom producing countries. The present control measures rely heavily on chemical insecticides, which in addition to increased input costs also lead to pesticide residues in the produce and environmental hazards. Although the crop is of high commercial value, limited efforts have been made to identify sources of resistance to this major pest. Exploiting sources of resistance along with integrated pest management tactics will help to reduce pesticide usage in this crop promoting sustainable production. The present study aimed at identifying sources of resistance against cardamom thrips and the associated plant morphological traits conferring resistance against the pest. Field screening of 180 cardamom germplasm accessions for 3 years at Appangala, Karnataka, India, resulted in identification of eight accessions resistant to cardamom thrips. Differences in panicle type and the nature of adherence of leaf sheath to the pseudostem explained a significant amount of the variance in resistance and therefore are likely to play a major role in conferring resistance against this pest. Multiple regression analysis of the different traits indicated that accessions with prostrate panicles having leaf sheath loosely adhered to the pseudostems were found to have significantly less thrips damage, when compared with other panicle and leaf sheath types. However, persistence of flower bract did not have a significant additive effect on imparting resistance against thrips. Metabolomic analysis of the accessions may provide further insight into the existence of supplementary biochemical mechanisms, if any, in imparting resistance. The identified traits and accessions can be exploited in future breeding programmes for developing thrips resistant cardamom varieties.  相似文献
