The formation of intracellular amorphous calcium carbonates (iACC) has been recently observed in a few cultured strains of Microcystis, a potentially toxic bloom-forming cyanobacterium found worldwide in freshwater ecosystems. If iACC-forming Microcystis are abundant within blooms, they may represent a significant amount of particulate Ca. Here, we investigate the significance of iACC biomineralization by Microcystis. First, the presence of iACC-forming Microcystis cells has been detected in several eutrophic lakes, indicating that this phenomenon occurs under environmental conditions. Second, some genotypic (presence/absence of ccyA, a marker gene of iACC biomineralization) and phenotypic (presence/absence of iACC) diversity have been detected within a collection of strains isolated from one single lake. This illustrates that this trait is frequent but also variable within Microcystis even at a single locality. Finally, one-third of publicly available genomes of Microcystis were shown to contain the ccyA gene, revealing a wide geographic and phylogenetic distribution within the genus. Overall, the present work shows that the formation of iACC by Microcystis is common under environmental conditions. While its biological function remains undetermined, this process should be further considered regarding the biology of Microcystis and implications on the Ca geochemical cycle in freshwater environments. 相似文献

Three groups wereexamined: sedentary mature (SM; 12-mo old), sedentary old (SO;23-24 mo old), and exercised old (EO; 23-24 mo old) that weretreadmill trained for 4-8 wk. The isometric contractile propertieswere studied at 0.2 Hz and 0.75 mM calcium. Without -adrenergicstimulation, there were no group differences for peak tension, maximumrate of tension development(+dP/dt), or maximum rateof tension dissipation(dP/dt). The time to peak tension was longer (P < 0.05) forboth EO and SO than for SM rats. Half relaxation time(RT1/2) was prolonged(P < 0.05) for SO compared with SMand EO (which did not differ). The three groups did not differ in the-adrenergic stimulation by isoproterenol of peak tension,dP/dt, time to peak tension, orcontraction duration. The inotropic response(+dP/dt) of SM was greater(P < 0.05) than that in SO or EOrats (which did not differ); however, the lusitropic response(RT1/2) was lesser(P < 0.05) in SO than in SM or EO rats (which did not differ). Fetal antigen 1 (FA1) is a glycoprotein containing six epidermal growth factor (EGF)-like repeats. It is closely similar to
the protein translated from the human delta-like (dlk) cDNA and probably constitutes a proteolytically processed form of dlk.
dlk is homologous to theDrosophila homeotic proteinsdelta andnotch and to the murine preadipocyte differentiation factor Pref-1. These proteins participate in determining cell fate choices
during differentiation. We now report that FA1 immunoreactivity is present in a number of neuroectodermally derived tumours
as well as in pancreatic endocrine tumours. A negative correlation between FA1 and glucagon immunoreactants in these tumours
prompted a reexamination of FA1 immunoreactants during fetal pancreatic development. At the earliest stages of development,
FA1 was expressed by most of the non-endocrine parenchymal cells and, with ensuing development, gradually disappeared from
these cells and became restricted to insulin-producing beta cells. Throughout development FA1 was not detected in endocrine
glucagon, somatostatin or pancreatic polypeptide cells. Moreover, developing insulin cells that coexpressed glucagon were
negative for FA1. Thus, there was a negative correlation between FA1 and glucagon both in tumours and during development.
These results, together with FA1/dlk's similarity with homeotic proteins, point to a role of FA1 in islet cell differentiation. 相似文献

We have isolated and characterized a mutant of temperate phage Mu-1 carrying an IS2 insertion in the middle of its β region. This mutant gives rise spontaneously to secondary mutants which have deletions of different sizes adjacent to IS2. One particular derivative however, was found to have acquired an additional insertion sequence adjacent to IS2. This derivative gave rise to tertiary mutants carryinh a deletion next to the tandem insertion. The tandem insertion was located at the same place in the Mu β region as another 2.6 kb insertion independently isolated by Chow et al. (1977) and was found to be homologous to that insertion. The properties of this particular secondary mutant show that Mu phage particles lacking their S end are defective for growth and lysogenisation. 相似文献
