Preliminary classification and ecology of dry grassland communities on Ölands Stora Alvar (Sweden)

Four plant community types are described for Öland's Stora Alvar, the limestone plateau of South Öland and preliminary classified syntaxonomically:
(1) Crepis pumila – Allium alvarense ass. (2) Helianthemum oelandicum – Galium oelandicum ass. (3) Gypsophila fastigiata – Globularia vulgaris ass. and (4) Veronica spicata – Avenula pratensis ass. (with two subassociations, the Sedum reflexum and Galium boreale subass.). The ecology of these types is discussed with emphasis on soil depth, frost perturbation and the combined effects of summer drought and grazing intensity.
Various endemic taxa appear to be good character species for the community types described. The typical local ecology of some common species is discussed with the suggestion that they might have formed endemic ecotypes which should be further investigated.
The communities described are very rich in cryptogams. The floristic variation as expressed by the cryptogamic species composition shows largely the same pattern as that shown by the phanerogams.     

Polymorphisms within the HLA-DR3 haplotypes

HLA-DR molecules were isolated from eight different HLA-DR3 homozygous B-cell lines by immunoprecipitation with monoclonal antibodies, and they were subsequently analyzed by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis. We found that HLA-DR3 homozygous B-cell lines of consanguineous origin express two types of HLA-DR molecules. One type of HLA-DR molecule was present in all the cell lines tested, whereas the second DR molecule appears to be polymorphic. DNA isolated from the different HLA-DR3 homozygous cell lines was studied by Southern blot analysis to determine whether any DR restriction fragment length polymorphism could be observed. Polymorphisms detected at both the product and genomic level have been compared to each other, and their relations to the serological (HLA-DR) and cellular (HLA-D and LB-Q1) typing data will be discussed.No reprints available     

Correspondence of the monocyte antigen HMA-1 to the non-HLA antigen 9a

Monocyte-specific antibodies are detrimental to bone marrow and renal transplantation. By using human antimonocyte sera we were able to identify two monocyte-specific antigens, human monocyte antigen 1 and 2 (HMA-1 and HMA-2). The presence of HMA-1 and HMA-2 was compared with the presence of several non-HLA antigens. In panel and inhibition studies, HMA-1 corresponded to the previously described non-HLA granulocyte antigen 9a. Absorption studies showed that HMA-1 and 9a were both present on granulocytes and monocytes. The clinical relevance of these antigens is discussed.     

Effects of CuDIPS and tween 80 on SJL/J tumorigenesis

Plasma copper and zinc levels were measured in SJL/J mice, an inbred strain characterized by a high, spontaneous incidence of reticulum cell sarcoma (RCS). The changes with age in mean concentrations of these metals were consistent with a physiological response that is required for remission of neoplasia. Treatment of SJL/J mice with a copper complex, Cu(II)(3,4-diisopropylsalicylate)₂ (Cu 3,5-DIPS), dissolved in a 10% Tween 80-saline solution revealed a decrease in survival and decline in the incidence of RCS at 52 wk of age. The toxic effects of Cu 3,5-DIPS therapy appeared to be related to the intraperitoneal route of administration and to extracellular deposition of collagen. The inhibitory effect on tumor development was not related to Cu 3,5-DIPS. Rather, Tween 80 was found to be the factor of importance.     

Reproductive strategies of the orang-utan: New data and a reconsideration of existing sociosexual models

Recent field data indicate that MacKinnon’s model of the orang-utan’s sexual and agonistic activity needs to be revised. In this model, male reproductive activity is concentrated in an extended phase of subadulthood and in early adulthood. According to this model, the role of older adult males is primarily that of range guardian, and in that role they would ensure that the offspring they had generated earlier would have safe access to food resources. This study presents cases suggesting that subadult males, even though sexually active, may have low reproductive success. In previous studies adult males were shown to display less sexual initiative than subadult males. In this study an adult male was at times involved infrequent mating activity in response to proceptive activity of females in the course of consortship. This adult male proved to be a successful breeder, thus refuting the hypothesis of adult male sterility. The female is most likely to conceive through cooperative mating in lengthy consortships with the dominant resident adult male. We hypothesize that the extended subadult phase represents a submissive strategy, allowing subadult males to remain in the home range of adult males but with minimal reproductive success.     

Bleomycin resistance: a new dominant selectable marker for plant cell transformation

Summary Plant cells are sensitive to the antibiotic bleomycin, a DNA damaging glycopeptide. A bleomycin resistance determinant, located on transposon Tn5 and functional in bacteria, has been cloned in a plant expression vector and introduced into Nicotiana plumbaginifolia using Agrobacterium tumefaciens. The expression of this determinant in plant cells confers resistance to bleomycin and allows selection of transformed plant cells.     

Flow karyotyping of human melanoma cell lines

Single-laser flow cytometry has been used to study the feasibility of flow karyotyping of human solid tumors. As a model, seven human melanoma cell lines have been used with varying numerical chromosome composition as verified by FCM DNA content measurements and chromosome countings. For all seven cell lines, flow karyotypes that showed a variety of consistent deviations from the normal diploid flow karyotype could be obtained although the resolution of the flow system and varying debris continuum limited the number of resolvable peaks. The predominant changes observed involved the regions normally representing chromosomes 3-8, 9-12, and 13-16. It is concluded that at present the preparation procedure is the main limiting factor for exploring the full potential of flow karyotyping for cytogenetic analysis of solid-tumor cell lines.     

Rapid estimation of the bacteriological quality of fresh fish by impedance measurements

The suitability of capacitance measurements by the Bactometer Monitoring System for a quick differentiation between good, poor and moderate quality of cod fillets, was tested.The application of Brain Heart Infusion broth as growing medium for capacitance measurements gave very small differences between duplicate measurements, if any.Both at 20 and 30°C these measurements correlated very well with the results of conventional methods for the determination of psychrophilic and mesophilic count respectively. The correlation coefficients were -0.93 and-0.95.For raw fish like cod fillets, measurements at 20°C are to be preferred because bacteriological quality defects revealed at 20°C were masked at 30°C in some cases.     

Epoxidation of alkenes by alkene-grown Xanthobacter spp.

Summary Newly isolated Xanthobacter spp. were able to grow on the gaseous alkenes like ethene, propene, 1-butene and 1,3-butadiene. Resting-cell suspensions of propene-, 1-butene- or 1,3-butadiene-grown Xanthobacter Py10 accumulated 1,2-epoxyethane from ethene. Ethene-grown Xanthobacter Py10 did not produce any 1,2-epoxyalkane from the alkenes tested. Furthermore, propenegrown Xanthobacter Py2 accumulated 2,3-epoxybutane from trans-butene and cis-butene but did not form epoxides from other substrates tested.
