Autopsy reports of pulmonary carcinoma; survey in Los Angeles County Hospital for 1951

Of the 1,972 deaths investigated by autopsy at the Los Angeles County Hospital in 1951, 64 were attributed to bronchogenic carcinoma. However, in some of these cases the protocols did not contain sufficient data to substantiate the diagnosis or the tissue specimens were not conclusive evidence. Although the survey left no doubt that the lung was the most common site of primary carcinoma in the series studied, a wider application of the findings is limited by the facts that patients with bronchogenic carcinoma are more likely than others to die in hospitals and that selection of cases for autopsy depends on the interest of the physician and the consent of the patient's survivors.     

Multiple sclerosis; its frequency and distribution,with special reference to San Francisco

Epidemiologic surveys of multiple sclerosis were conducted in 1949 in San Francisco, Winnipeg, Boston, New Orleans, and Denver. Reports of cases for 1939 through 1948 were obtained from record offices, hospitals and clinics, and private physicians. The basis for the observations was the group of "probable" cases among residents. In San Francisco these probable cases in residents numbered 415; however, in only 146 of these was the onset between 1939 and 1948. Of the 143 patients who were white, 51 were male and 92 female. The average annual incidence based on these figures was 2.1 per 100,000-1.5 for males and 2.6 for females.Prevalence, based on probable cases in residents on January 1, 1949, was 29.7 cases per 100,000 population-21.2 for males and 38.1 for females. Mortality was 0.7 per 100,000 population-0.9 for females and 0.6 for males. In comparison of the findings for San Francisco with those of other cities, both the incidence and the severity of the disease appear to decrease from north to south.     

Conductive and convective heat flows of exercising humans in cold water

The apparent conductance (Kss, in W.m-2.degrees C-1) of a given region of superficial shell (on the thigh, fat + skin) was determined on four nonsweating and nonshivering subjects, resting and exercising (200 W) in water [water temperature (Tw) 22-23 degrees C] Kss = Hss/(Tsf-Tsk) where Hss is the skin-to-water heat flow directly measured by heat flow transducers and Tsf and Tsk are the temperatures of the subcutaneous fat at a known depth below the skin surface and of the skin surface, respectively. The convective heat flow (qc) through the superficial shell was then estimated as qc = (Tsf - Tsk).(Kss - Kss,min), assuming that at rest Kss was minimal (Kss,min) and resting qc = 0. The duration of immersion was set to allow rectal temperature (Tre) to reach approximately 37 degrees C at the end of rest and approximately 38 degrees C at the end of exercise. Except at the highest Tw used, Kss at the start of exercise was always Kss,min and averaged 51 W.m-2.degrees C-1 (range 33-57 W.m-2.degrees C-1) across subjects, and qc was zero. At the end of exercise at the highest Tw used for each subject, Kss averaged 97 W.m-2.degrees C-1 (range 77-108 W.m-2.degrees C-1) and qc averaged 53% (range 48-61%) of Hss (mean Hss = 233 W.m-2).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)     

Immunocytochemical localization of the elongation factor Tu in E. coli cells

The localization of the elongation factor Tu (EF-Tu) in ultrathin cryosections of E. coli cells was determined with the electron microscope using a highly specific immunological labelling technique. EF-Tu is distributed almost homogeneously throughout the cytoplasm. Although it has often been suggested that EF-Tu could be part of a putative prokaryotic cytoskeleton, we did not find any evidence for supramolecular assemblies, such as fibres or filaments, containing a large amount of EF-Tu. EF-Tu was not observed in association with the outer cell membrane and periplasmic space. A topological relationship with the inner membrane is not apparent in our micrographs. In cells in which the EF-Tu level is raised significantly, the protein piles up in discrete cell regions.     

Thrombocyte substitution in acute leukemia. Effect of histocompatibility on the clinical efficacy

Thrombocyte substitution is an essential prerequisite for intensive cytoreductive therapy in acute leukemia. Evaluating 228 thrombocyte transfusions in 17 patients shows that the clinical effectiveness of thrombocyte concentrates can be increased by making the coordination of HLA antigens of donor and receiver as good as possible. When measured in the corrected increment (CI) 24 hours after transfusion, the effectiveness of A3/B1 match preparations (CI = 7.0 +/- 1.6) is significantly higher than that of random preparations (CI = 3.0 +/- 0.5). With the presence of HLA antibodies an effective substitution (CI24 greater than or equal to 4.5) can only be achieved by A3/B1 match thrombocytes. This can only be realized by applying the fourfold thrombapheresis of single donors.     

Bikunin and α1-microglobulin in human zona pellucida and connective tissue

The occurrence of bikunin and ·₁-microglobuli n was investigated in human ovary and Fallopian tubes. Bikunin and ·₁-microglobulin are transcribed in the liver from a common gene. Bikunin immunoreactivity was detected in the zona pellucida. A positive reaction for bikunin was also observed in connective tissue of the oviduct. In addition, mast cells showed a more intense posi tive reaction than the surrounding connective tissue. Specific displaceable ·₁-microglobulin immunoreactivity was revealed in the zona pellucida. The data suggest that bikunin and ·₁- microglobulin are trapped in the zona pellucida. This revised version was published online in November 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.     

Daphniopsis australis nov.sp. (Crustacea: Cladocera), a further daphniid in Australian salt lakes

Daphniopsis australis, a new species of cladoceran in Australian salt lakes, is described, and some brief comments on its distribution are given.     

Immunochemical studies on human monoclonal macroglobulins with specificities for 3,4-pyruvylated D-galactose and 4,6-pyruvylated D-glucose

Four of six human monoclonal IgM proteins were found to react best with Klebsiella polysaccharides containing 3,4py beta DGal (pyruvic acetalated D-galactopyranose), one with Klebsiella polysaccharides with 4,6pyDGlc; the sixth is uncharacterized. The combining sites of two of these (IgMWEA and IgMNAE) were essentially indistinguishable by quantitative precipitin studies at varying pH and by quantitative precipitin inhibition assays, but the other two differed in specificity of their combining sites from these and from each other. These differences were detected by precipitin inhibition assays with 3,4py beta DGal-containing oligosaccharide alditols, the R and S isomers of methyl 4,6py alpha DGal, the R isomer of methyl 4,6py beta DGal, or the R and S isomers of methyl 4,6py alpha DGlc, and -beta DGlc. In all of these except the S isomer of methyl 4,6pyDGal and R isomer of methyl 4,6pyDGlc, the carboxyl group is axial to the plane of the acetal ring. Their specificity appears to be determined by the nonreducing ends of chains and is considered to be cavity-type.     

Health status of blood donors in the Magdeburg region (1974-1980)

A report is presented on the results of investigations made in 188 657 prospective blood donors from 1974-1980 within the district of Magdeburg. Methods of investigation and recommendations of the International Society of Blood Transfusion for selecting blood donors are compared. A total of 12337 (= 6.53%) were not admitted as a donor and 1360 blood conserves (0.77%) could not be used for transfusion because of laboratory findings obtained afterwards. Causes are dealt with in detail. The necessity of supervising the health of donors and the existing limitations for it are pointed out.
