Aim The laying of eggs and the building of a nest structure to accommodate them are two of the defining characteristics of members of the class Aves. Nest structures vary considerably across avian taxa and for many species the structure of the completed nest can have important consequences both for parents and their offspring. While nest characteristics are expected to vary adaptively in response to environmental conditions, large‐scale spatial variation in nest characteristics has been largely overlooked. Here, we examine the effects of latitudinal variation in spring temperatures on nest characteristics, including insulatory properties, and reproductive success of blue tits, Cyanistes caeruleus, and great tits, Parus major. Location Great Britain. Methods Nests and reproductive data were collected from seven study sites, spread over 5° of latitude. The nest insulatory properties were then determined before the nests were separated into nest base material and cup lining material. Results As spring temperatures increased with decreasing latitude, the mass of the nest base material did not vary in either species, while the mass of the cup lining material and nest insulatory properties decreased in both species. This suggests that in response to increasing temperatures the breeding female reduces the mass of the cup lining material, thereby maintaining an appropriate microclimate for incubating and brooding. The mean first egg date of both species advanced with decreasing latitude and increasing spring temperatures, although clutch size and brood size at hatching and fledging did not vary. Main conclusions This is the first study to demonstrate that the nest‐construction behaviour of birds varies in response to large‐scale spatial variation in ambient temperatures. Therefore, nest composition reliably indicates environmental conditions and we suggest that studies of nest structure may be sentinels for the early signs of rapid climate change. 相似文献

Benthic community metabolism was measured in three habitats (riffles, runs and pools) during spring (May), summer (July) and fall (October) in the Jacks Fork River, Missouri, using an in situ chamber technique. Net community productivity (NCP) and gross community productivity (GCP) were highest in riffles, lowest in pools and intermediate in runs. Rates of NCP and GCP during spring and fall were similar for both riffles and runs, but NCP and GCP increased significantly during summer in both habitats. Pool substrates were always heterotrophic and exhibited no significant seasonal changes in NCP or GCP. Community respiration (CR) was highest in riffles, intermediate in runs and lowest in pools, but interhabitat differences in CR were generally smaller than for NCP. Rates of CR during spring and fall were similar, but CR increased significantly during summer. Results indicate that the physical conditions associated with each habitat strongly affect benthic community metabolism in this stream and that the relative proportions of these habitats will influence the ratio of living algal:detrital organic matter potentially available for consumers. 相似文献

Variation in group size is characteristic of most social species. The extent to which individuals sort among group sizes based on age may yield insight into why groups vary in size and the age‐specific costs and benefits of different social environments. We investigated the age composition of Cliff Swallow (Petrochelidon pyrrhonota) colonies of different sizes over 18 yr at a long‐term study site in western Nebraska, USA. Using years elapsed since banding as a relative measure of age for over 194,000 birds, we found that the proportion of age‐class‐1 swallows (birds banded as nestlings or juveniles or adults in the year of banding) of both sexes increased in larger colonies and at colony sites becoming active later in the summer. Age composition was unrelated to how often a particular colony site was used. The effect of colony size most likely reflected the fact that older birds return to the same colony site in successive years even when the colony size there decreases, and that yearlings and immigrants benefit more from larger colonies than do older, more experienced individuals. The date effect probably resulted in part from later spring arrival by younger and/or immigrant swallows. At fumigated sites where ectoparasitic swallow bugs (Oeciacus vicarius) had been removed, age composition did not vary with either colony size or colony initiation date. The patterns reported here appear to be driven partially by the presence of ectoparasites and suggest that the hematophagous bugs influence variation in Cliff Swallow group composition. Our results are consistent with the hypothesis that variation in colony size reflects, in part, age‐based sorting of individuals among groups. 相似文献

Nile tilapia occurs naturally in East Africa where it’s an economically important species. Many of the natural populations of Nile tilapia have been affected by anthropogenic activities including translocations, associated with programmes aimed at enhancing capture fisheries and aquaculture productivity. Using geometric morphometric analyses, we tested the hypothesis that such anthropogenic activities have augmented admixture among natural populations of Nile tilapia and influenced the geographical distribution of morphological variation within the species. Our expectation was that Nile tilapia shape divergent might be consistent with reportedly anthropogenic activities in nonnative environments. To test this hypothesis, we analyzed the shapes of 490 individuals from thirteen populations; three farms, six natives and four nonnative natural populations. Our analysis revealed that the most pronounced shape diversification was observed in seven populations; three nonnatives (Victoria, Kyoga and Sindi farm) and four natives (Albert, River Nile, George and Turkana). The features responsible for the observed morphotypes were mainly related to the orientation of the anterior region of the fish and may be due to diversifying selection in response to new environmental pressures (for nonnative populations), admixture or drift. Shape change in the nonnative high-altitude populations was unexpectedly conserved, suggesting recent introductions which may have not resulted in admixture or there was strong selection against change in the traits measured. On the other hand, the recorded morphotypic clusters explained the possible genetic link to their putative ancestral home. Our results were partially consistent with our prediction that the nonnative populations exhibited divergent morphotypes. We recommend further investigations with molecular genetics for follow-up of these findings. 相似文献

Effects of force fields on the conformational and dynamic properties of amyloid β(1‐40) dimer explored by replica exchange molecular dynamics simulations 下载免费PDF全文
The conformational space and structural ensembles of amyloid beta (Aβ) peptides and their oligomers in solution are inherently disordered and proven to be challenging to study. Optimum force field selection for molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and the biophysical relevance of results are still unknown. We compared the conformational space of the Aβ(1‐40) dimers by 300 ns replica exchange MD simulations at physiological temperature (310 K) using: the AMBER‐ff99sb‐ILDN, AMBER‐ff99sb*‐ILDN, AMBER‐ff99sb‐NMR, and CHARMM22* force fields. Statistical comparisons of simulation results to experimental data and previously published simulations utilizing the CHARMM22* and CHARMM36 force fields were performed. All force fields yield sampled ensembles of conformations with collision cross sectional areas for the dimer that are statistically significantly larger than experimental results. All force fields, with the exception of AMBER‐ff99sb‐ILDN (8.8 ± 6.4%) and CHARMM36 (2.7 ± 4.2%), tend to overestimate the α‐helical content compared to experimental CD (5.3 ± 5.2%). Using the AMBER‐ff99sb‐NMR force field resulted in the greatest degree of variance (41.3 ± 12.9%). Except for the AMBER‐ff99sb‐NMR force field, the others tended to under estimate the expected amount of β‐sheet and over estimate the amount of turn/bend/random coil conformations. All force fields, with the exception AMBER‐ff99sb‐NMR, reproduce a theoretically expected β‐sheet‐turn‐β‐sheet conformational motif, however, only the CHARMM22* and CHARMM36 force fields yield results compatible with collapse of the central and C‐terminal hydrophobic cores from residues 17‐21 and 30‐36. Although analyses of essential subspace sampling showed only minor variations between force fields, secondary structures of lowest energy conformers are different. 相似文献

In studies reported in the 1960s and in several investigations since, plasma from irradiated individuals was shown to induce chromosomal aberrations when transferred into normal blood cultures. In the present study, the aim was to investigate the occurrence of these clastogenic factors (CF) using markers representing DNA damage produced in reporter lymphocytes that are treated with plasma from locally exposed individuals. Blood plasma was obtained from clinical patients with benign conditions before and after they had received radiation to small treatment volumes. Three patient groups were studied: (I) marginal resected basal cell carcinoma, (II) painful osteoarthritis of the knee, and (III) painful tendinitis of the elbow or the heel. Patients in each treatment group obtained the same fractionated treatment regimen, ranging from a total dose of 40 Gy (8 × 5 Gy, 2 factions/week) to a very small volume (1-3.5 cm3) in group I to a total dose of 6 Gy (6 × 1 Gy, 2 fractions/week) for groups II and III (treatment volumes 800-1150 cm3 and 80-160 cm3, respectively). The presence of CF in the plasma was investigated through cytogenetic (chromosomal aberrations, micronuclei) assays and kinetics of early DNA damage (γ-H2AX foci) in reporter cells. With the experimental settings applied, local radiation exposure had no apparent effect on the induction of CF in patient plasma; no deviations in chromosomal aberrations or micronucleus or focus induction were observed in reporter cells treated with postexposure plasma with respect to pre-exposure samples when the mean values of the groups were compared. However, there was a large interindividual variation in the plasma-induced DNA-damaging effects. Steroid treatment of patients was demonstrated to be the most influential factor affecting the occurrence of plasma factors; plasma from patients treated with steroids led to significant reductions of γ-H2AX foci and reduced numbers of chromatid aberrations in reporter cells. In addition to the locally exposed patients, newly obtained plasma samples from three radiological accident victims exposed in 1994 were examined. ToxA is a proteinaceous necrotrophic effector produced by Stagonospora nodorum and Pyrenophora tritici-repentis. In this study, all eight mature isoforms of the ToxA protein were purified and compared. Circular dichroism spectra indicated that all isoforms were structurally intact and had indistinguishable secondary structural features. ToxA isoforms were infiltrated into wheat lines that carry the sensitivity gene Tsn1. It was observed that different wheat lines carrying identical Tsn1 alleles varied in sensitivity to ToxA. All ToxA isoforms induced necrosis when introduced into any Tsn1 wheat line but we observed quantitative variation in effector activity, with the least-active version found in isolates of P. tritici-repentis. Pathogen sporulation increased with higher doses of ToxA. The isoforms that induced the most rapid necrosis also induced the most sporulation, indicating that pathogen fitness is affected by differences in ToxA activity. We show that differences in toxin activity encoded by a single gene can contribute to the quantitative inheritance of necrotrophic virulence. Our findings support the hypothesis that the variation at ToxA results from selection that favors increased toxin activity. 相似文献

SSR primers and by exploring bermudagrass expressed sequence tags (ESTs) from the National Center for Biotechnology Information
(NCBI) database. The transferability of 354 tested sorghum SSRs was 57% to C. transvaalensis T577 (2n = 2x = 18), 27% to C. dactylon Tifton 10 (2n = 6x = 54) and 22% to Zebra (2n = 4x = 36). Among the transferred SSRs, 65 primer pairs generated reproducible SSR bands across the three genotypes. From 20,237

The major phospholipid classes of the obligate intracellular bacterial parasite Chlamydia trachomatis are the same as its eukaryotic host except that they also contain chlamydia-made branched-chain fatty acids in the 2-position. Genomic analysis predicts that C. trachomatis is capable of type II fatty acid synthesis (FASII). AFN-1252 was deployed as a chemical tool to specifically inhibit the enoyl-acyl carrier protein reductase (FabI) of C. trachomatis to determine whether chlamydial FASII is essential for replication within the host. The C. trachomatis FabI (CtFabI) is a homotetramer and exhibited typical FabI kinetics, and its expression complemented an Escherichia coli fabI(Ts) strain. AFN-1252 inhibited CtFabI by binding to the FabI·NADH complex with an IC50 of 0.9 μm at saturating substrate concentration. The x-ray crystal structure of the CtFabI·NADH·AFN-1252 ternary complex revealed the specific interactions between the drug, protein, and cofactor within the substrate binding site. AFN-1252 treatment of C. trachomatis-infected HeLa cells at any point in the infectious cycle caused a decrease in infectious titers that correlated with a decrease in branched-chain fatty acid biosynthesis. AFN-1252 treatment at the time of infection prevented the first cell division of C. trachomatis, although the cell morphology suggested differentiation into a metabolically active reticulate body. These results demonstrate that FASII activity is essential for C. trachomatis proliferation within its eukaryotic host and validate CtFabI as a therapeutic target against C. trachomatis. 相似文献
