What was the environmental complex in which the Plio-Pleistocene hominids were evolving? What situations selected f o r increasing variation in hominid morphology? A n ap-preciation of ecological dynamics is important to develop answers to those questions. The circumstances that accompany periodically more severe semiarid successions appear to have promoted a shqt in early australopithecine morphology toward hyper-robust forms. Successional dynamics (including ameliorated conditions) may have resulted in repeated sympat y of potentially competing lines. Through the process of character divergence, some earliergracile populations appear to have emerged more Homo-like by the end of the Pliocene. Palaeodemographic analysis combined with detailed ecological modeling offers new possibilities f o r explorato y retrodictions concerned with common and divergent hominid adaptations. Silver stainability of the chromosomal nucleolus organizing regions that contain the structural genes for ribosomal RNA can be abolished by proteolytic and oxidative treatments. Histone extraction has no effect. This indicates that reducing groups of non-histone chromosomal proteins are responsible for silver staining. Treatment with fluorescent sulfhydryl and disulfide specific reagents followed by silver staining demonstrates coincidence of silver dots and brightly fluorescent spots at the short arms of human acrocentric chromosomes where ribosomal RNA-genes are located. After treatment with cupric sulfite reagent in the presence of urea fluorescence and silver staining was no longer possible. Silver staining has been reported to be associated with ribosomal RNA-gene activity. Acrocentric chromosomes that are negative in silver staining also lack the brightly fluorescent spots. Therefore, we conclude that an abundance of protein-bound sulfhydryl and disulfide groups occur at nucleolar organizing regions with active genes. Differentially fluorescing spots could not be observed after staining with fluorescamine. So, either the sulfhydryl reagents used in this study are much more sensitive than fluorescamine to study protein distributions in cytological preparations, or our observations point to a local accumulation of some specific protein(s) rich in sulfhydryls. The presence of many sulfhydryl and disulfide groups at the nucleolus organizing regions seems suggestive of a great flexibility of protein(s) by transition of sulfhydryl groups to disulfide bridges and vice versa at these highly active regions of the genome. 相似文献

Abstract— We have measured serotonin (5-HT) within large and small neurosomata which are vitally stained by Neutral Red dye. A micro-radioenzymatic technique which is sensitive to 50fmol of 5-HT was employed on intact ganglia, 75 μm Retzius Cells (RZ) and a 10 μm ventro-lateral cell (VL) taken from the leech Macrobdella decora. The stain does not affect the levels of 5-HT in either ganglia or RZ. The VL cell body contains 5-HT at concentrations of at least 100 m m . Microspectrofluorometry of all the ganglionic neurosomata which fluoresce following the Falck-Hillarp formaldehyde condensation reaction detected rapidly-fading emission peaks of 509–523 nanometers. We conclude that all seven fluorescent neurons in the leech ganglion very probably contain serotonin. 相似文献

Sea urchin sperm–egg adhesion is mediated by bindin, a sperm surface protein that has lectin-like activity. Bindin agglutinates eggs, and this interaction has been shown to be inhibited by glycopeptides released from the egg surface by protease treatment. In this study, we report the purification and properties of such an egg surface glycoconjugate that may be involved in sperm adhesion. The glycoconjugate was partially purified by gel filtration and affinity chromatography on bindin particles. Upon gel filtration on Sepharose CL 4-B, the glycoconjugate elutes near the void volume, suggesting that it has a molecular weight in excess of one million. In addition, we have found that the egg surface glycoconjugate agglutinates bindin particles, indicating that it is multivalent. Carbohydrate analysis indicates that the glycoconjugate is composed primarily of fucosc, xylose, galactose, and glucose. This purified egg surface component is the most potent inhibitor of bindin-mediated egg agglutination yet described. 相似文献

The subcutaneous injection of Walker 256 carcinosarcoma cells into a rat was followed by a pronounced increase in plasma ceruloplasmin activity. This lasted only about 3 weeks even though the tumors were still enlarging rapidly. Based upon studies with67Cu, the increase in plasma ceruloplasmin seemed to reflect increased production of the enzyme by the livers of rats bearing the tumors. Injections of turpentine also raised plasma ceruloplasmin, but to a significantly lesser extent and normal values were reached within 2 weeks. 相似文献

A deterministic predator-prey model is presented for describing the dynamics of a solid tumor in the presence of a specifically
reactive lymphocyte population which is stimulated by, and antagonistic to, the tumor. The qualitative behavior of the solutions
is developed and briefly compared to the results of transplantation experiments. Although the model is primitive, it leads
to predictions that are in general agreement with observation and intuitive expectations. In particular, it is found that:
(1) very low levels of transplanted tumor will not survive in the recipient. (2) At somewhat higher levels, tumor growth will
be uncontrolled in the syngeneic recipient. However, immune intervention if early enough, can lead to control and elimination
of the tumor. (3) At still higher levels of transplanted tumor, no amount of immune intervention will be effective in controlling
the tumor. (4) If the recipients immune system is suppressed prior to transplantation, or is debilitated for any reason, the
chance that the tumor will grow increases. (5) If the recipients immune system is stimulated prior to transplantation, the
chance of tumor survival decreases. (6) The survival of the tumor is much more sensitive to changes in tumor parameters (for

Stochastic models of human reproduction are beginning to play significant roles in the evaluation of family planning programs.
A class of stochastic processes called absorbing, agedependent, semi-Markov processes frequently arises in the construction
of such models. The paper begins with a discussion of some technicalities regarding absorbing, age-dependent, semi-Markov
processes. Then, an algorithm due to Littman, which makes possible the computerization of this class of stochastic processes,
is presented. Briefly, Littman’s algorithm provides an efficient method for numerically solving systems of renewal type integral
equations, provided the system does not contain a large number of equations. After setting down a concrete model for a large
clinical trial of intrauterine devices conducted in Taiwan, the paper concludes with a discussion of a method for validating
the model based on the data collected in the clinical trial.
