Study of the functional activity of the macrophages of animals immunized with staphylococcal alpha-anatoxin]

A study was made by histochemical methods of the activity of the enzymatic systems of macrophages from normal rabbits and those immunized with staphylococcus alpha-toxoid per se and infected with the strains of staphylococcus--producers of alpha-toxin or leukocydin. Immunization of rabbits was accompanied by a reduction in macrophages of the activity of the group of lysosomal enzymes and by an increase in the activity of the redox enzymes. In infection of "immune" macrophages with the living culture of the alpha-toxigenic strains the mentioned changes were more pronounced; no such changes were found after the infection with the leukocydin-active strain. The data obtained suggested that the lysosomal enzymes played a definite role in the process of phagocytosis.     

Effects of indomethacin and prostaglandin F2α on parturition in the hamster

In the female hamster, temporary sterility for a period of 10 or 15 days was induced by an intraperitoneal Silastic-PVP-tube containing 0.5 or 1.0 mg of PGF_2α, respectively. All Silastic-PVP-PGF_2α tube bearing animals regained fertility and delivered normal litters at various times after the placement of the tube. The release rate of ³H-PGF_2α from the Silastic-PVP tube was described and their potential use as a drug delivery system discussed.     

Relationship between Raman spectroscopic lines and growth of Rhizobium japonicum

The Raman spectroscopic lines of liquid cultures of Rhizobium japonicum have been compared with electron microscopic examinations and growth measurements of these cells. The results showed that the significant Raman lines are related to the reproduction activities of the procaryotic cells.     

ZAKβ antagonizes and ameliorates the cardiac hypertrophic and apoptotic effects induced by ZAKα

ZAK (sterile alpha motif and leucine zipper containing kinase AZK), a serine/threonine kinase with multiple biochemical functions, has been associated with various cell processes, including cell proliferation, cell differentiation, and cardiac hypertrophy. In our previous reports, we found that the activation of ZAKα signaling was critical for cardiac hypertrophy. In this study, we show that the expression of ZAKα activated apoptosis through both a FAS‐dependent pathway and a mitochondria‐dependent pathway by subsequently inducing caspase‐3. ZAKβ, an isoform of ZAKα, is dramatically expressed during cardiac hypertrophy and apoptosis. The interaction between ZAKα and ZAKβ was demonstrated here using immunoprecipitation. The results show that ZAKβ has the ability to diminish the expression level of ZAKα. These findings reveal an inherent regulatory role of ZAKβ to antagonize ZAKα and to subsequently downregulate the cardiac hypertrophy and apoptosis induced by ZAKα.
