Hormonal regulation of anabolic processes and of protein utilization efficiency in the early postnatal period

The levels of thyroid, pituitary and steroid hormones-thyroxine, triiodothyronine and 11-hydroxycorticosteroids in the blood serum, somatotropin in the pituitary, and processes of protein assimilation were studied in rats in the early postnatal period. The highest endogenous production of thyroxine, triiodothyronine and somatotropin was detected in 15-day-old rats. The highest level of protein utilization was detected in 7 to 15-day-old rats, followed by the lowering of the utilization on changing over to definitive nutrition. Endogenous production of the anabolic hormones thyroxine, triiodothyronine and somatotropin was found to correlate with a high level of protein utilization in rats within the first days of life after birth.     

Decreased virulence in stable,acapsular mutants ofCryptococcus neoformans

Six acapsular strains ofCryptococcus neoformans obtained by chemical mutagenesis failed to produce a capsulein vivo and were avirulent in mice following high dose intramuscular, intraperitoneal or intravenous inoculation. Peritoneal granulomas were observed in all animals inoculated with the acapsular mutants. These granulomas were characterized by a large central mass consisting of intact, degenerating and necrotic yeast cells. This was surrounded by concentric layers of a broad band of histiocytes, a narrow band of fibroblasts, and around the periphery, a mass of lymphocytes and plasma cells. These isolates did not revert to an encapsulated or virulent state after more than a year of subculturing or 18 passages through mice.

A gel filtration method has been developed for the complete removal of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) from proteins and peptides. The protein or peptide (20 μg–10 mg) containing SDS (up to 30–60 mg) is dissolved in a mixture of propionic acid, formic acid, and water (2:1:2, $\text{v}\text{v}$). Under these conditions, protein-SDS (or peptide-SDS) complexes, as well as SDS micelles, are dissociated. Subsequently, protein and SDS can be separated on a small Sephadex G-25 superfine column. The recovery of protein is typically 90% or more.     

Acetate production from lactate and glucose fermentation by Gluconobacter oxydans

Summary The production of acetate from the fermentation of lactate by Gluconobacter oxydans was studied. Batch experiments showed that glucose was the preferred substrate compared to lactate. A fed-batch culture was fed with a mixture of glucose and lactate followed by periodic addition of lactate. The maximum productivity of acetate was 0.16 g/l h but this value decreased during the fedbatch culture due to growth inhibition by acetate.     

Seasonal distribution of enteroviruses and adenoviruses in domestic sewage

A seasonal distribution of enteroviruses and adenoviruses in raw sewage effluents of Athens, Greece, was observed over a 15-month surveillance period. All 36 samples tested were positive for both virus groups. Adenovirus concentration levels ranged from 70 to 3200 cytopathic units per litre of sample, whereas the corresponding values for enteroviruses were 90-900 cytopathic units per litre. Peak values for adenoviruses were recorded during the months of April and June 1983, whereas for enteroviruses the peak was recorded in September 1983. All three types of poliovirus were present. Coxsackievirus types B-1, B-2, B-4, and B-5 and echovirus type 7 were also isolated. Adenovirus types 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, and 15 were detected as well.     

Furosemide-sensitive Na+-K+ cotransport and cellular metabolism in human erythrocytes

Metabolic depletion of human red cells with 2-deoxy-D-glucose in the presence of EGTA decreased ATP to about 4% of the initial value and increased total ouabain- and furosemide-resistant Na+ and K+ effluxes by 20% and 100%, respectively, and furosemide-sensitive Na+ and K+ effluxes by 100% and 60%, respectively. When ATP was restored, all the components of Na+ and K+ fluxes measured returned to baseline levels suggesting a metabolic dependence.     

The Role of Surface Water and Light on Differentiation in the Cellular Slime Molds

A key environmental factor in inducing final fruiting body differentiation in the migrating slugs of cellular slime molds is loss of contact with a surface film of water. If the slug tip reaches above the water film, fruiting tends to occur, but if it stays in contact with the surface water, continued migration is favored. Light is effective in promoting fruiting only if the phototactic slugs orient away from surface (as with overhead light) and therefore, only indirectly affects differentiation.     

An association between a lymphocyte antigen in sheep and the response to vaccination against the parasite Trichostrongylus colubriformis

Lymphocyte antigens were tested in sheep which had been selected for responsiveness to vaccination against the intestinal nematode Trichostrongylus colubriformis. These sheep had been bred in an assortative mating programme which produced offspring designated as either “high responders” or “low responders”, with highly heritable resistance or susceptibility.Ovine lymphocyte antigen (OLA) typing antisera were obtained from parous ewes in the course of matings which produced the high and low responder flocks. A particular antigen (SY1) was found to be present in high frequency on the lymphocytes of high responder (72·2%) and in lower frequency (21·9%) on the lymphocytes of low responder rams. In ewes, the frequency for high responders was 65·7% and for low responders it was 33·5%. A similar association between the SY1 antigen and low faecal egg count was found in random-bred sheep which had been vaccinated with irradiated larvae and challenged with normal larvae. The conclusion was drawn that this lymphocyte antigen was likely to be part of the sheep major histocompatibility complex which influenced the immune response of sheep to vaccination against the parasite.     

Advanced carcinoma of the prostate: treatment with a gonadotrophin releasing hormone agonist.

Ten patients with advanced progressive adenocarcinoma of the prostate were treated with a long acting analogue of gonadotrophin releasing hormone. Eight of these patients responded to treatment in terms of pain relief and clinical regression of tumour. Serum gonadotrophin and testosterone concentrations were significantly suppressed by the end of the second week of treatment, testosterone concentrations being comparable with those achieved by castration. The two patients who failed to respond had both relapsed previously when receiving conventional treatment, and neither showed any endocrine response to the analogue. Superagonists of gonadotrophin releasing hormone may be the treatment of choice in adenocarcinoma of the prostate, but further trials are required to establish long term safety and efficacy.
