It is well reported that the environmental factors along with different endocrine stimulus play a crucial role in maintenance of adrenocortical activity in birds. This study is first to report a detailed seasonal activity cycle of adrenal cortex, particu-larly its secretory physiology in a tropical nocturnal bird, Indian spotted owlet Athene brama . The maximum cortical activity having highest glandular mass, glandular free cholesterol, esterified cholesterol profiles, and peak level of corticosterone in plasma coincided with the long day length, highest temperature and increasing amplitude of relative humidity and rainfall of the early summer month, May. Cortical activity declined to minimum level in August when the ecofactors also declined parallely and hence, the birds entered into partial hibernation. The cortical activity progressed slowly throughout the winter (September-March) to reach maximum level in May. Further, the electron microscopic observations of cortical cell morphology strongly supported the above seasonal activity status of the gland revealing a comparatively large number of mitochondria during May than August, along with lipid filled vacuoles during May but not in August. Besides, assessment of gonadal and pineal hormones in relation with seasonal activity of adrenal cortex presented a parallel relationship with gonad while completely inverse relationship with pineal. Therefore, the study concludes that the seasonal adrenocortical activity of this tropical nocturnal bird might be regulated by multiple factors, particularly by the environmental temperature, humidity/rainfall and photoperiod along with the internal factors at least by gonadal and pineal hormones.  相似文献

Background  

Endometrial remodelling is necessary for implantation in all mammalian species. The TGF beta super-family plays a crucial role in this event in humans and mice. However, the role of TGF beta super-family members during implantation is still unclear in ruminants. In the present study, the spacio-temporal expression of TGF beta super-family members including activin was explored in bovine trophoblasts and endometrial tissue during the peri-implantation period in order to elucidate whether it is essential for promoting cell proliferation at the implantation site.  相似文献

The endogenous circadian rhythm of melatonin in mammals provides information regarding the resetting response of the mammalian circadian timing system in response to the changes in light dark cycle. Photoperiodic changes are reported to have acute and chronic effect on melatonin rhythm. Our aim in present experiment was to study the effect of single light pulse of low intensity on the circadian variation of melatonin in Indian palm squirrel. A short pulse of 5min was given to the animals at 22:55 h on day 16th in natural photoperiodic condition of long day length (LD ~ 13.55:10.05) and melatonin levels were estimated at every 4-h interval on ZT scale on day 17th (DD). Observations suggest that the light pulse given on day 16th suppressed the melatonin level on day 17th (DD). Besides this, it was also found that there was phase delay in the peak value of melatonin. Further, we tested the ability of single melatonin injection on the light pulse induced phase shift of acrophase of melatonin in this species F. pennanti . We injected the single physiological dose of melatonin (25 microgram/100 g body wt.) just 5 min prior to the commencement of light pulse (22:50 h) on day 16 and melatonin levels were estimated on day 17th as above. Injection of melatonin prior to light pulse altered the suppressing and phase shifting effect of light in terms of peak concentration of melatonin in squirrels. Above data may lead us to conclude that the biological clock mechanism controlling circadian rhythm of melatonin in this rodent is in response to the phase shifting effect of light and acute melatonin treatment. Further, we may suggest that single melatonin injection has the capability to entrain melatonin rhythm but a dose dependent study is required to facilitate the suggestion.  相似文献

Many wildlife species suffer from human–wildlife conflict, especially crop-raiding. Long-term analyses of mortality patterns are needed to assess the efficacy of management strategies that address this issue. We report mortality patterns from necropsies of 498 Asian elephants from 2009–2018 in an area of northwestern Sri Lanka. Deaths were lowest in July and highest in October, a period of peak crop availability. Most (about 70%) deaths were human-related, and males were killed in these incidents more frequently than females. As gunshot deaths decreased, other forms of human-related deaths increased. Additionally, causes of death differed between districts, with more intentional human-related mortality observed in the district with the highest percent of protected land. These results highlight the importance of understanding the long-term spatial and temporal variation in wildlife mortality to effectively address human–wildlife conflict. © 2021 The Wildlife Society.  相似文献
