Summary Avocado (Persea americana) cultivars were assayed for phosphoglucose isomerase (PGI) isozymes using starch gel electrophoresis. Three PGI genes were identified: one monomorphic locus, Pgi-I, coding for the plastid isozyme and two independently assorting loci, Pgi-2 and Pgi-3, coding for the cytosolic isozymes. The genetic analysis was based on comparisons of PGI zymograms from somatic and pollen tissue and on Mendelian analysis of progeny from selfed trees. The isozymic variability for PGI can be used for cultivar identification and for differentiating between hybrid and selfed progeny in avocado breeding.  相似文献

Summary Mycobacterium L1 can grow on vinyl chloride as sole carbon and energy source. Application of this bacterium to remove vinyl chloride from waste gases is proposed. From air containing 1% vinyl chloride 93% of the vinyl chloride was removed by passing the air through a fermentor containing a growing population ofMycobacterium L1.  相似文献

The radiation (32P) induced dwarf mutant of spring barley,Hordeum vulgare L., Mut. Dornburg 576, was genetically studied by crosses with the mother variety and characterized by seedling assays and investigations on development and yield formation. In comparison to the normal mother variety (Hordeum vulgare L., cv. Saale) mutant plants exhibit drastically reduced culm length, intensive tillering, a prolonged life cycle and a smaller biomass and grain yield formation. These characters are controlled by one gene in a pleiotropic way. The mutant responds with normal growth and development to the application of gibberellins.  相似文献

The activity levels of leucine, isoleucine and valine aminotransferases were determined in various cerebral regions, liver and muscle of rats injected with a large dose of ammonium acetate and were compared with those of normal animals. In brain the activity levels of both leucine and isoleucine aminotransferases were elevated in both preconvulsive and convulsive states. Valine aminotransferase activity was suppressed in brain stem and corpus striatum and was elevated in cerebellum and hippocampus in preconvulsive states. During convulsions its activity was suppressed in cerebral cortex and hippocampus. Under these conditions, there was a suppression of both leucine and valine aminotransferases in muscle. In liver, however, the activities of these enzymes were elevated. The results suggested that the glutamate required for glutamine formation in hyperammonaemic states in brain might be obtained from branched chain amino acids, especially leucine and isoleucine.  相似文献

Susceptibility to inorganic mercuric ions and to organomercurials of 237 Pseudomonas aeruginosa clinical strains isolated in Mexico was determined by agar dilution tests. Resistant strains fell into two classes: i) narrow-spectrum resistant strains (27% of total isolates) resistant only to mercuric ions and to merbromin, and most grouped in pyocin type 1; and ii) broad-spectrum resistant strains (5%) with additional resistances to thimerosal, phenylmercury, methylmercury and p-hydroxymercuribenzoate, that belonged mostly to pyocin type 10. Mercurial resistant isolates showed a higher proportion of resistance to antibiotics and metals than did mercurial sensitive isolates, and broad-spectrum resistant strains had the highest frequency of resistance to antibiotics and to tellurite and arsenate.  相似文献

Superoxide dismutase and catalase activities were studied in Azotobacter vinelandii grown diazotrophically at different ambient oxygen concentrations in continuous culture. Activities were expressed either as specific activity or activity per cell. Specific superoxide dismutase activity increased by a factor of 1.6 with increasing oxygen concentration from about 1% to 90% air saturation of the growth medium whereas specific catalase activity increased only slightly, if at all. Since cell volumes increased in parallel to increases in the oxygen concentration cellular superoxide dismutase activities increased by a factor of 4.3 while cellular catalase activities increased by a factor of 3.3. Under all conditions only the Fe-containing form of superoxide dismutase was detected. The possible function of these enzymes in the protection nitrogenase from oxygen damage is discussed.Abbreviation SOD superoxide dismutase  相似文献

Summary Lectins are a useful tool for identification of differently glycosylated hypophyseal hormones, prohormones and glycoconjugates without hormone function. -d-galactose and -N-acetyl-d-galactosamine (GalNAc) containing glycoconjugates were identified by light microscopy with biotinylated lectins in immunocytochemically localized cells of the anterior pituitary of the rat. Galactose, histochemically detectable by the peanut lectin (PNA), was found at penultimate position of the carbohydrate chain after removal of sialic acid. Galactose containing cells correspond to gonadotrophs and thyrotrophs located mainly in medioanterior regions of the pituitary. The lectins from the soybean (SBA) and horse gram (DBA) both specific for GalNAc residues, are bound to round and also polygonal cells corresponding again to gonadotrophs and thyrotrophs.  相似文献

Summary Polysaccharide formation by Rhodococcus erythropolis was studied using lower mono-, di-and trihydric alcohols, sugars and n-alkanes as carbon sources. Cultural conditions of the organism were examined with regard to polysaccharide production. It was demonstrated that a glycerol substrate, an 30°C incubation temperature and a pH of 7.5 were optimal cultural conditions for polysaccharide formation. Addition of penicillin G in the decelerating growth phase increased the polysaccharide concentration in the culture filtrate to 3.1 g/l. One of the main extracellular heteropolysaccharides formed by Rhodococcus erythropolis consisted of glucose and mannose in the molar ratio 11, a small portion of protein and a trace of glucosamine. The molecular weight was to be 1·14×106.  相似文献

Summary Crude extracts of bacteria lysogenic for temperate phage Mu contain proteins that retain specifically Mu DNA on nitrocellulose filters. The amount of binding protein is directly proportional to the number of Mu prophages per E. coli genome. Specificity of the binding reaction could be demonstrated by using heterologous DNAs as substrate and by a competition experiment. By using hybrid plasmids containing different amounts of the immunity end and extending to various degrees into Mu DNA, it was found that the binding activity is coded for by the left 1,000 nucleotide-pair HindIII fragment. When using these hybrid plasmids as binding substrate, two different binding sites for the immunity product were detected. Joining of the MucI gene to the left early promoter resulted in increased production of immunity protein at elevated temperature. A possible explanation for the relatively low amounts of immunity protein in all of the different strains studied is discussed.This work was supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (grant Ba 600/1)  相似文献
