Some chromosome numbers of the CzechoslovakLeguminosae

Chromosome numbers of the Czechoslovak species of the genusLotus, from various localities have been determined. The paper includes the speciesLotus uliginosus Schkuhr,L.tenuis Waldst. etKit. andL. borbásii Ujhelyi.     

Activity of β-galactosidase in homogenates and isolated microvilli fraction of jejunal mucosa from suckling rats

1. beta-Galactosidase activity was studied in homogenates and isolated microvilli fraction of jejunal mucosa from 14-day-old suckling rats. o-Nitrophenyl beta-d-galactoside served as the substrate. 2. The microvilli fraction contains about one-third of the total activity of the original homogenate. 3. The pH optimum of the beta-galactosidase was 3.5 in the total homogenate and supernatant fraction, whereas in the microvilli fraction the maximum activity was at pH5.5. 4. This work gives further support to the view that two beta-galactosidases exist in the jejunal mucosa.     

Morphological comparison ofSqualus blainvillei andS. megalops in the Eastern Atlantic,with notes on the genus

Morphological comparisons are made from the study of 64 specimens belonging to the following species:Squalus acanihias, S. blainvillei, S. megalops andS. acutirostris. The results suggest conspecificity betweenS. acutipinnis andS. megalops. The differences betweenS. blainvillei andS. megalops in the E-Atlantic are stressed. The Indo-Pacific species calledS. blainvillei by Chen et al. (1979) is regarded in this paper as probably an undescribed species. Some consideration on the status of several nominal species and the species grouping withinSqualus are also made.     

Biomass partitioning in twoCalamagrostis villosa stands on deforested sites

Calamagrostis villosa stands occurring in areas deforested by air-pollution impact in the Moravian-Silesian Beskydy Mountains were characterized by a high dry mass of total underground biomass (3 300 g. m^?2—the slope site, 2 850 g. m^?2—the flat site). The percentage of living roots and rhizomes in total underground biomass was very high (about 70%). The total aboveground biomass was respectively, 321 g.m^?2 (the slope site) and 726 g. m^?2 (the flat site). In unstabilized habitats on steep slope, the higher plant biomass produced was allocated to a more developed root system.
