The influence of interruption of the visual input on acoustic habituation was studied in cats before and following the administration of quipazine, 3 mg/kg iv. The characteristics of acoustic habituation were analyzed through the magnitude and temporal course of multiunit activity (MUA) responses elicited in the mesencephalic reticular formation (MRF) by repetitive acoustic stimuli (70 db, 50 Hz trains of 2 sec duration) in 6 freely moving cats with cortical electrodes over the parietal cortex and bipolar electrodes chronically implanted in MRF and basolateral amygdala (AMN). The cats were submitted to repetitive acoustic stimulation during one 30 min period before, and three 30 min periods after drug administration in the following conditions: a) with unmasked eyes; b) with masked eyes by means of dark contact lenses. Persistent attentive behavior, catatonic attitudes, hypersynchronous (6 Hz, 100-150 microV) EEG activity and significant increase of spontaneous MUA in FRM and AMN were induced by quipazine both in the cats tested with unmasked and with masked eyes. This increase of MUA was higher immediately following drug administration and progressively decreased, although MUA values remained significantly higher than controls 110 min after quipazine administration. Acoustic habituation, evidenced through the progressive decrease of MUA responses of MRF to acoustic stimuli, was observed before quipazine administration when the cats were tested with unmasked and with masked eyes; as well as in cats tested with unmasked eyes following drug administration. However, the MUA responses to acoustic stimuli did not decrease in cats with masked eyes during acoustic stimulation periods 0-30 min and 40-70 min after quipazine administration.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The iron status of 50 patients with Ph'-positive chronic granulocytic leukaemia (CGL) was evaluated at diagnosis by means of bone marrow and blood studies. A decreased or absent iron in semiquantitative estimation on bone marrow smears was observed in 92% of patients, and 88% had a low sideroblast score. In contrast, normal Hb and serum iron concentrations were found in the majority of cases, and only two out of the 50 patients displayed a decreased serum ferritin. To ascertain whether the bone marrow pattern of iron depletion could be due to an expansion of the red cell mass, the latter parameter was measured by isotopic methods in a subgroup of 11 patients. Normal or slightly increased values were obtained in all cases. We conclude that absent or decreased marrow iron is a common feature in the chronic phase of CGL, that generally does not reflect true iron deficiency. Since such a finding is also usual in polycythaemia vera and idiopathic myelofibrosis, it should be included among the features shared by the chronic myeloproliferative disorders.  相似文献

The growth of Casuarina cunninghamiana seedlings was stimulated when inoculated with Azospirillum brasilense. This resulted in a higher biomass production than in uninoculated controls in the presence or absence of a non-nodulating strain of Frankia.Increase in whole plant dry weight was due to a significant increase in both shoot and root biomass, which corresponded with a higher total N content of the plants inoculated with Azospirillum. No such effects were observed under inoculation with a non-nodulating Frankia strain. These results suggest that the growth-promoting substances provided by A. brasilense may have enhanced the growth of Casuarina seedlings.  相似文献

Summary Calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP)-and vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP)-immunoreactivity were observed to coexist in Merkel cells of cats. No differences in peptide content were found between Merkel cells located in epithelia of the hard palate, in hairy and glabrous skin of the upper lip, and in vibrissae follicles. CGRP-and VIP-immunoreactive nerve fibres were also found near CGRP/VIP-immunoreactive Merkel cells. In the vibrissae follicles some CGRP-and VIP-immunoreactive nerve terminals end abutting on the glassy membrane. Other CGRP immunoreactive nerve fibres penetrate the epithelium of the skin and end within it. Electron microscopy of vibrissae follicles revealed that Merkel cell neuntes are not immunostained and that immunostained nerve fibres form unmyelinated bundles before ending freely. Thus, CGRP-and VIP immunoreactive nerve fibres in cat skin do not end as Merkel cell neuntes but as different kinds of free nerve endings.  相似文献

The iron status of 26 patients with essential thrombocythaemia (ET) was evaluated at diagnosis by means of bone marrow iron and blood studies, including serum ferritin determination. Nine patients were males, 17 females, and the mean age was 53 years (range 7-81). A decreased or absent iron level by semiquantitative estimation on bone marrow smears was observed in 77% of patients, and 81% had a low sideroblast score. Such a marrow pattern of iron depletion was equally distributed between both sexes. Contrasting with this, normal Hb, MCV, serum iron and serum ferritin were registered in the majority of cases. According to these results, absent or decreased marrow iron would be a common feature in ET, generally not reflecting true iron deficiency, as it occurs in the remaining chronic myeloproliferative disorders. Thus, in patients in whom ET is suspected, the diagnostic criterion of ruling out iron deficiency would be better served by serum ferritin measurement than by bone marrow iron estimation.  相似文献

Bacteria were isolated from soil samples, containing high exchangeable lead concentrations, obtained from a busy freeway in the México City metropolitan area. Forty-five selected strains (86.7% Gram-positive) had a single MIC distribution pattern for lead (800–1600 µg/ml lead nitrate) and were considered lead-resistant. The isolates showed variable levels of resistance to arsenate (86.7%), chromate (66.7%), cadmium (57.6%), and mercury (31.1%) ions. ChrA is a membrane protein that confers resistance to the toxic ion chromate through the energy-dependent chromate efflux from the cytoplasm. In the protein databases, ChrA is a member of the chromate ion transporter (CHR) superfamily, composed of at least several dozens of members, distributed in the three domains of life. The aim of this work was to perform a phylogenetic analysis of the CHR superfamily. An exhaustive search for ChrA homologous proteins was carried out at the National Center for Biotechnology Information database. One hundred and thirty-five sequences were identified as members of the CHR superfamily [77 long-chain sequences, or bidomains (LCHR), and 58 short-chain sequences, or monodomains (SCHR)], organized mainly as tandem pairs of genes whose resultant proteins probably possess oppositely oriented membrane topology. LCHR sequences were split into amino and carboxyl domains, and the resultant domains were aligned with the SCHR proteins. A phylogenetic tree was reconstructed using four different methods, obtaining similar results. The domains were grouped into three clusters: the SCHR proteins cluster, the amino domain cluster of LCHR proteins and the carboxyl domain cluster of LCHR proteins. These results, as well as differences in the genomic context of CHR proteins, enabled the proteins to be sorted into two families (SCHR and LCHR), and 10 subfamilies. Evidence was found suggesting an ancient origin of LCHR proteins from the fusion of two SCHR protein-encoding genes; however, some secondary events of fusion and fission may have occurred later. The separate distribution of the LCHR and SCHR proteins, differences in the genomic context in both groups and the fact that chromate transport has been demonstrated only in LCHR proteins suggest that the CHR proteins comprise two or more paralogous groups in the CHR superfamily.  相似文献

The impact of γ-Al(2)O(3) nanoparticles (NP) on specific methanogenic activity (SMA) and humus reducing activity (HRA) in an anaerobic consortium was evaluated. SMA in sludge incubations without γ-Al(2)O(3) was always higher compared with those performed in the presence of 100?g/L of γ-Al(2)O(3). Nevertheless, the SMA in incubations with γ-Al(2)O(3) was not completely inhibited, indicating that some methanogenic microorganisms were physiologically active even in the presence of γ-Al(2)O(3) NP during the incubation period (~400?h). SMA and HRA of the anaerobic consortium were also conducted in the presence of γ-Al(2)O(3) NP coated with humic acids (HA). Microbial HA reduction occurred 3.7-fold faster using HA immobilized on γ-Al(2)O(3) NP (HA(Imm)), compared with the control with suspended HA (HA(Sus)). Furthermore, immobilized HA decreased the toxicological effects of γ-Al(2)O(3) NP on methanogenesis. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images revealed cell membrane damage in those sludge incubations exposed to uncoated γ-Al(2)O(3) NP. In contrast, cell damage was not observed in incubations with HA-coated γ-Al(2)O(3) NP. Methanogenesis out-competed microbial humus reduction regardless if HA was HA(Imm) or HA(Sus). The present study provides a clear demonstration that HA immobilized in γ-Al(2)O(3) NP are effective terminal electron acceptor for microbial respiration and suggests that HA could mitigate the toxicological effects of metal oxide NP on anaerobic microorganisms.  相似文献
