The present study analyzed the diet composition, ontogenetic shifts and dietary overlap of Brotula clarkae in relation to stage of maturity and sex. Samples were collected from the trawling fishery along the Pacific coast of Costa Rica (2011–2012) at depths ranging from 41.4 to 168.3 m; however, over 80% of the sampled fish were obtained at depths between 50 and 75 m. Size ranged from 14.4 to 98.4 cm total length. Of the 323 analyzed stomachs, 44.3% were from males, 86% were from immature individuals, and 49.8% had at least one prey item. According to the prey‐specific index of relative importance (PSIRI), decapod shrimps were the most important prey (57.6% PSIRIi) followed by teleosts (28.2% PSIRIi), stomatopods (10.8% PSIRIi), and crabs (3.3% PSIRIi). Male and female B. clarkae exhibited a high dietary overlap (CH = 0.94). Immature B. clarkae consumed primarily shrimps and crabs (71.5% of stomachs from immature specimens contained shrimps, which accounted for over 66.0% PSIRIi); mature individuals consumed a large proportion of teleosts and stomatopods, which together contributed to over 91.0% PSIRIi. Both immature and mature B. clarkae overlapped spatially with the commercial trawling fishery grounds along the Pacific coast of Costa Rica. However, juveniles feed predominantly on shrimps, suggesting that immature B. clarkae may be subjected to high fishing pressure as by‐catch, making them particularly vulnerable to overexploitation.  相似文献

It is generally accepted that polyploids have downsized basic genomes rather than additive values with respect to their related diploids. Changes in genome size have been reported in correlation with several biological characteristics. About 75 % of around 350 species recognized for Paspalum (Poaceae) are polyploid and most polyploids are apomictic. Multiploid species are common with most of them bearing sexual diploid and apomictic tetraploid or other ploidy levels. DNA content in the embryo and the endosperm was measured by flow cytometry in a seed-by-seed analysis of 47 species including 77 different entities. The relative DNA content of the embryo informed the genome size of the accession while the embryo:endosperm ratio of DNA content revealed its reproductive mode. The genome sizes (2C-value) varied from 0.5 to 6.5 pg and for 29 species were measured for the first time. Flow cytometry provided new information on the reproductive mode for 12 species and one botanical variety and supplied new data for 10 species concerning cytotypes reported for the first time. There was no significant difference between the mean basic genome sizes (1Cx-values) of 32 sexual and 45 apomictic entities. Seventeen entities were diploid and 60 were polyploids with different degrees. There were no clear patterns of changes in 1Cx-values due to polyploidy or reproductive systems, and the existing variations are in concordance with subgeneric taxonomical grouping.  相似文献

The lethal yellowing (LY) disease and LY‐type syndromes affecting several palm species are associated with 16SrIV phytoplasmas in the Americas. In Mexico, palms of the species Roystonea regia and the native Acrocomia mexicana were found to exhibit LY‐type symptoms, including leaf decay, starting with mature leaves, necrosis and atrophy of inflorescences. DNA extracts obtained from these palms could be amplified by nested‐PCR using phytoplasma‐universal primer pair P1/P7 followed by LY‐group‐specific primer pair LY16Sr/LY16Sf. Blast analysis of the sequences obtained revealed an identity of 100% for R. regia and 99.27% for A. mexicana with 16SrIV‐A strain associated with LY in Florida, USA (Acc. AF498309 ). Computer‐simulated RFLP analysis showed that the patterns for the phytoplasma DNA of the two palm species were highly similar to that for 16SrIV subgroup A strain. A neighbour‐joining tree was constructed, and the sequences of the two palm species clustered in the same clade of group 16SrIV subgroup A. The results therefore support that LY‐type syndromes observed in palms of R. regia and A. mexicana in the Yucatan region of Mexico are associated with 16SrIV subgroup A phytoplasmas.  相似文献

An increased level of plasma corticosterone is one manifestation of severe environmental or physiologic stress. The stress response mediated by the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis is already known to suppress immunoglobulin production and to impair immune function, but there are few studies relating stress and plasma corticosterone to the outcome of Trypanosoma cruzi infection. In this study, male Wistar rats were infected with the Y strain of T. cruzi and then subjected to repetitive stress by exposure to ether vapor for 1min twice a day during the acute phase of infection. Stressed animals showed decreased lytic antibody activity and lowered levels of peritoneal macrophages. Despite an increase in the weight of the spleen, histological analyses demonstrated tissue alterations, the presence of amastigote nests, and a complete absence of activated lymphoid follicles. These results suggest that stress-induced increases in plasma corticosterone can suppress the immune response and worsen tissue injury during the acute phase of T. cruzi infection.  相似文献

Primary aldosteronism is most often caused by aldosterone-producing adenoma (APA) and bi-lateral adrenal hyperplasia. Most APAs are caused by somatic mutations of various ion channels and pumps, the most common being the inward-rectifying potassium channel KCNJ5. Germ line mutations of KCNJ5 cause familial hyperaldosteronism type 3 (FH3), which is associated with severe hyperaldosteronism and hypertension. We present an unusual case of FH3 in a young woman, first diagnosed with primary aldosteronism at the age of 6 years, with bilateral adrenal hyperplasia, who underwent unilateral adrenalectomy (left adrenal) to alleviate hyperaldosteronism. However, her hyperaldosteronism persisted. At the age of 26 years, tomography of the remaining adrenal revealed two different adrenal tumors, one of which grew substantially in 4 months; therefore, the adrenal gland was removed. A comprehensive histological, immunohistochemical, and molecular evaluation of various sections of the adrenal gland and in situ visualization of aldosterone, using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization imaging mass spectrometry, was performed. Aldosterone synthase (CYP11B2) immunoreactivity was observed in the tumors and adrenal gland. The larger tumor also harbored a somatic β-catenin activating mutation. Aldosterone visualized in situ was only found in the subcapsular regions of the adrenal and not in the tumors. Collectively, this case of FH3 presented unusual tumor development and histological/molecular findings.  相似文献

Stilestrongylus peromysci n. sp. collected from Peromyscus difficilis (Hidalgo state, México), differs from other species in the genus in number of the spines (30) in the synlophe (both sexes) and because the eighth ray arises from the root of the ninth ray; S. hidalguensis n. sp. parasitised Peromyscus sp. and differs from all other congeneric species in the presence of 24 spines in the male synlophe and in the arrangement of the bursal rays (2-2-1 in the right lobe and 2-3 in the left lobe). The National Fish and Wildlife Forensic Laboratory is responsible for the determination of species of birds, reptiles, and mammals from the United States, as well as international species falling under the protection of CITES treaties. We have recently found electrospray ionization mass spectrometry to be an effective means of rapidly analyzing blood samples for species identification. Nearly 1000 individuals were analyzed which comprised 62 species represented by birds, mammals, and reptiles. Whole blood and dried blood samples were analyzed without purification to provide simultaneous molecular weights from the alpha- and beta-proteins present in each sample's hemoglobin. The combination of the two molecular weights for the hemoglobin proteins (i.e., alpha/beta-pairs) was used as species determining markers. In all, 133 distinctive alpha/beta-pairs were observed from the individuals analyzed. Despite the variability in the hemoglobins evaluated, 86% of these alpha/beta-pairs were found to be diagnostic for a particular species to the exclusion of all other species studied. No other single protein system studied by a single analytical technique can so effectively resolve species from a wide range of taxa as can the hemoglobin system when analyzed by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry.  相似文献
