Does predation maintain tit community diversity?   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
European tits of the genus Parus constitute a complex group of coexisting boreal birds. Here we present a survey of the distribution of three coniferous-living Parus species and one of their main predators, the pygmy owl ( Glaucidium passerinum ), on nine isolated islands in Scandinavia. On all islands the coal tit ( Parus ater ) is the sole tit species when the pygmy owl is absent. The two larger species, the willow tit ( P. montanus ) and the crested tit ( P. cristatus ), only coexist with the coal tit when pygmy owls are present. We suggest that the coexistence of willow tits, crested tits and coal tits is the result of a combination of competition for food and predator-safe foraging sites. The smaller coal tit is superior in exploitation competition for food, while the two larger species have an advantage in interference competition for predator-safe foraging sites. The association between the distribution of the pygmy owl and the two larger tit species on isolated islands in Scandinavia is consistent with the idea that the pygmy owl is a keystone predator.  相似文献

Stenocereus eruca is a prostrated, self-incompatible cactus endemic to the Sonoran Desert that regenerates primarily through clonal propagation. Clonal growth is expected to affect mate availability by influencing the number and spatial distribution of mating types. In this paper we examine the role of clonal growth on female fecundity through a series of pollination experiments in a population of S. eruca. We set up a pollen supplementation experiment using five distance treatments with pollen collected at 1, 10, 100, 1000 and 25000 m from receptor flowers during the years 2001 and 2002 and evaluated genetic sifmilarities between pairs of receptor-donor ramets through RAPD markers. Our data on fruit set, number of seeds/fruit, germination and overall fecundity revealed that S. eruca show a significant reduction in female fecundity when pollination occurs between ramets located at short distances (1 and 10 m), while genetic data showed high levels of similarity at those distances. The reduction in female fecundity is apparently a consequence of geitonogamy and inbreeding depression. Our data suggest that clonal growth and geitonogamy are likely to be partially responsible for the low levels of sexual reproduction and seedling recruitment observed in populations of S. eruca. Abstract. We analysed the heterogeneity of high-elevation vegetation on three mountains along a west-east transect at 41 °S lat. in the Andes of northwestern Patagonia, Argentina. In this area, high-Andean vegetation occurs as islands on mountain tops above Nothofagus pumilio forests ? with the timberline at ca. 1700 m a.s.l. We recorded floristic, topographic and substrate data in 166 sites stratified according to longitude, altitude, slope and aspect. Vegetation data were classified with TWINSPAN and ordinated with Detrended Correspondence Analysis. The relationship between environmental and floristic variation was analysed using Canonical Correspondence Analysis. In order of importance, geographical longitude, altitude and aspect were the major determinants of vegetation variation, whereas substrate texture and slope appeared less important. The combination of these factors resulted in two main vegetation gradients. The first gradient is related to a moisture availability gradient, primarily determined by longitude and secondarily to variation in wind exposure (east vs. west aspect). The second vegetation gradient is related to variation in temperature, primarily determined by altitude, and secondarily by variation in insolation related to the contrast between north and south aspects. The four communities obtained with TWINSPAN are therefore associated with four characteristic habitat types: moist-cold, moist-warm, dry-cold and dry-warm. The community of warm and dry environments is the richest and has elements in common with dry steppe communities situated at lower elevations to the east, while the vegetation of the cold-moist habitat type has unique elements that are typical of the southern Andes. Although current climatic factors appear to be the major determinants of high-Andean vegetation gradients, historical events of Pleistocene times probably also affected the vegetation patterns we see today.  相似文献

Iron uptake in Arabidopsis thaliana is mediated by ferric chelate reductase FRO2, a transmembrane protein belonging to the flavocytochrome b family. There is no high resolution structural information available for any member of this family. We have determined the transmembrane topology of FRO2 experimentally using the alkaline phosphatase fusion method. The resulting topology is different from that obtained by theoretical predictions and contains 8 transmembrane helices, 4 of which build up the highly conserved core of the protein. This core is present in the entire flavocytochrome b family. Glucose transport into cells may be regulated by a variety of conditions, including ischemia. We investigated whether some enzymes frequently involved in the metabolic adaptation to ischemia are also required for glucose transport activation. Ischemia was simulated by incubating during 3 h H9c2 cardiomyoblasts in a serum- and glucose-free medium in hypoxia. Under these conditions 2-deoxy-d-[2,6-3H]-glucose uptake was increased (57% above control levels, p < 0.0001) consistently with GLUT1 and GLUT4 translocation to sarcolemma. Tyrosine kinases inhibition via tyrphostin had no effect on glucose transport up-regulation induced by simulated ischemia. On the other hand, chelerythrine, a broad range inhibitor of protein kinase C isoforms, and rottlerin, an inhibitor of protein kinase C delta, completely prevented the stimulation of the transport rate. A lower activation of hexose uptake (19%, p < 0.001) followed also treatment with Gö6976, an inhibitor of conventional protein kinases C. Finally, PD98059-mediated inhibition of the phosphorylation of ERK 1/2, a downstream mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), only partially reduced the activation of glucose transport induced by simulated ischemia (31%, p < 0.01), while SB203580, an inhibitor of p38 MAPK, did not exert any effect. These results indicate that stimulation of protein kinase C delta is strongly related to the up-regulation of glucose transport induced by simulated ischemia in cultured cardiomyoblasts and that conventional protein kinases C and ERK 1/2 are partially involved in the signalling pathways mediating this process.  相似文献

AKAP350 is a multiply spliced type II protein kinase A-anchoring protein that localizes to the centrosomes in most cells and the Golgi apparatus in epithelial cells. Multiple studies suggest that AKAP350 is involved in microtubule nucleation at the centrosome. Our previous studies demonstrated that AKAP350 was necessary for the maintenance of Golgi apparatus integrity. These data suggested that AKAP350 might be necessary for normal cytoskeletal interactions with the Golgi. To examine the relationship of AKAP350 with the microtubule cytoskeleton, we analyzed the effect of the depletion of AKAP350 on microtubule regrowth after nocodazole treatment in HeLa cells. The decrease in AKAP350 expression with short interfering RNA induced a delay in microtubule elongation with no effect on microtubule aster formation. In contrast, overexpression of the centrosomal targeting domain of AKAP350 elicited alterations in aster formation, but did not affect microtubule elongation. RNA interference for AKAP350 also induced an increase in cdc42 activity during microtubule regrowth. Our data suggest that AKAP350 has a role in the remodeling of the microtubule cytoskeleton.  相似文献

Recent studies have demonstrated that hydrogen sulfide (H2S) produced through the activity of l -cysteine desulfhydrase (DES1) is an important gaseous signaling molecule in plants that could participate in abscisic acid (ABA)-induced stomatal closure. However, the coupling of the DES1/H2S signaling pathways to guard cell movement has not been thoroughly elucidated. The results presented here provide genetic evidence for a physiologically relevant signaling pathway that governs guard cell in situ DES1/H2S function in stomatal closure. We discovered that ABA-activated DES1 produces H2S in guard cells. The impaired guard cell ABA phenotype of the des1 mutant can be fully complemented when DES1/H2S function has been specifically rescued in guard cells and epidermal cells, but not mesophyll cells. This research further characterized DES1/H2S function in the regulation of LONG HYPOCOTYL1 (HY1, a member of the heme oxygenase family) signaling. ABA-induced DES1 expression and H2S production are hyper-activated in the hy1 mutant, both of which can be fully abolished by the addition of H2S scavenger. Impaired guard cell ABA phenotype of des1/hy1 can be restored by H2S donors. Taken together, this research indicated that guard cell in situ DES1 function is involved in ABA-induced stomatal closure, which also acts as a pivotal hub in regulating HY1 signaling.  相似文献

The sesquiterpene lactone tubiferin was chemically purified from the brazilian native plant Wunderlichia crulsiana and identified by NMR and GC/MS data. Its ability to inhibit the respiratory burst of peritoneal inflammatory polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN) stimulated upon addition of phorbol miristate acetate (PMA), opsonized zymosan (OZ), and N-formyl-methionyl-leucyl-phenylalanine (fMLP) was evaluated. The tubiferin inhibition was more pronounced when PMN were stimulated through the protein kinase C pathway (PMA) compared to the alternative complement pathway (OZ). The inhibition when PMN were triggered by a chemoattractant stimulus (fMLP) was similar to that achieved with OZ-stimulated phagocytes. Tubiferin showed dose-dependent effects on the PMN respiratory burst triggered by the three different substances, and also decreased substantially the carrageenan-induced mice paw edema.  相似文献

The renin-angiotensin system expressed in adipose tissue has been implicated in the modulation of adipocyte formation, glucose metabolism, triglyceride accumulation, lipolysis, and the onset of the adverse metabolic consequences of obesity. As we investigated angiotensin II signal transduction mechanisms in human preadipose cells, an interplay of extracellular-signal-regulated kinases 1 and 2 (ERK1,2) and Akt/PKB became evident. Angiotensin II caused attenuation of phosphorylated Akt (p-Akt), at serine 473; the p-Akt/Akt ratio decreased to 0.5±0.2-fold the control value without angiotensin II (p<0.001). Here we report that the reduction of phosphorylated Akt associates with ERK1,2 activities. In the absence of angiotensin II, inhibition of ERK1,2 activation with U0126 or PD98059 resulted in a 2.1±0.5 (p<0.001) and 1.4±0.2-fold (p<0.05) increase in the p-Akt/Akt ratio, respectively. In addition, partial knockdown of ERK1 protein expression by the short hairpin RNA technique also raised phosphorylated Akt in these cells (the p-Akt/Akt ratio was 1.5±0.1-fold the corresponding control; p<0.05). Furthermore, inhibition of ERK1,2 activation with U0126 prevented the reduction of p-Akt/Akt by angiotensin II. An analogous effect was found on the phosphorylation status of Akt downstream effectors, the forkhead box (Fox) proteins O1 and O4. Altogether, these results indicate that angiotensin II signaling in human preadipose cells involves an ERK1,2-dependent attenuation of Akt activity, whose impact on the biological functions under its regulation is not fully understood.  相似文献
