The amount of food resources available to upper‐level consumers can show marked variations in time and space, potentially resulting in food limitation. The availability of food resources during reproduction is a key factor modulating variation in reproductive success and life‐history tradeoffs, including patterns of resource allocation to reproduction versus self‐maintenance, ultimately impacting on population dynamics. Food provisioning experiments constitute a popular approach to assess the importance of food limitation for vertebrate reproduction. In this study of a mesopredatory avian species, the lesser kestrel Falco naumanni, we provided extra food to breeding individuals from egg laying to early nestling rearing. Extra food did not significantly affect adult body condition or oxidative status. However, it increased the allocation of resources to flight feathers moult and induced females to lay heavier eggs. Concomitantly, it alleviated the costs of laying heavier eggs for females in poor body condition, and reduced their chances of nest desertion (implying complete reproductive failure). Extra food provisioning improved early nestling growth (body mass and feather development). Moreover, extra food significantly reduced the negative effects of ectoparasites on nestling body mass, while fostering forearm (a flight apparatus trait) growth among highly parasitized nestlings. Our results indicate that lesser kestrels invested the extra food mainly to improve current reproduction, suggesting that population growth in this species can be limited by food availability during the breeding season. In addition, extra food provisioning reduced the costs of the moult–breeding overlap and affected early growth tradeoffs by mitigating detrimental ectoparasite effects on growth and enhancing development of the flight apparatus with high levels of parasitism. Importantly, our findings suggest that maternal condition is a major trait modulating the benefits of extra food to reproduction, whereby such benefits mostly accrue to low‐quality females with poor body condition.  相似文献

Dissecting phenotypic variance in life history traits into its genetic and environmental components is at the focus of evolutionary studies and of pivotal importance to identify the mechanisms and predict the consequences of human‐driven environmental change. The timing of recurrent life history events (phenology) is under strong selection, but the study of the genes that control potential environmental canalization in phenological traits is at its infancy. Candidate genes for circadian behaviour entrained by photoperiod have been screened as potential controllers of phenological variation of breeding and moult in birds, with inconsistent results. Despite photoperiodic control of migration is well established, no study has reported on migration phenology in relation to polymorphism at candidate genes in birds. We analysed variation in spring migration dates within four trans‐Saharan migratory species (Luscinia megarhynchos; Ficedula hypoleuca; Anthus trivialis; Saxicola rubetra) at a Mediterranean island in relation to Clock and Adcyap1 polymorphism. Individuals with larger number of glutamine residues in the poly‐Q region of Clock gene migrated significantly later in one or, respectively, two species depending on sex and whether the within‐individual mean length or the length of the longer Clock allele was considered. The results hinted at dominance of the longer Clock allele. No significant evidence for migration date to covary with Adcyap1 polymorphism emerged. This is the first evidence that migration phenology is associated with Clock in birds. This finding is important for evolutionary studies of migration and sheds light on the mechanisms that drive bird phenological changes and population trends in response to climate change.  相似文献

SARS‐CoV‐2 infection results in impaired interferon response in patients with severe COVID‐19. However, how SARS‐CoV‐2 interferes with host immune responses is incompletely understood. Here, we sequence small RNAs from SARS‐CoV‐2‐infected human cells and identify a microRNA (miRNA) derived from a recently evolved region of the viral genome. We show that the virus‐derived miRNA produces two miRNA isoforms in infected cells by the enzyme Dicer, which are loaded into Argonaute proteins. Moreover, the predominant miRNA isoform targets the 3′UTR of interferon‐stimulated genes and represses their expression in a miRNA‐like fashion. Finally, the two viral miRNA isoforms were detected in nasopharyngeal swabs from COVID‐19 patients. We propose that SARS‐CoV‐2 can potentially employ a virus‐derived miRNA to hijack the host miRNA machinery, which could help to evade the interferon‐mediated immune response.  相似文献

Results of our conclusive study on urinary enzyme stability during sample storage are reported. We measured alanine aminopeptidase (AAP) and N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminidase (NAG) in morning urines from 9 healthy normal subjects immediately after collection and throughout a 1-year storage at -70 and -20 degrees C. AAP proved to be quite stable at -70 degrees C (99.2% of the basal value at the end of the year). NAG is partially preserved (84.1% of the basal value) at -70 degrees C, but significantly decreased (50.4%) at -20 degrees C.  相似文献

Abstract.  Triatoma guasayana (Wygodzinsky & Abalos), a sylvatic vector of Chagas' disease, occurs in natural and peridomestic habitats of the dry Chaco region of Argentina, Bolivia and Paraguay. Ten-year retrospective spatial analyses of peridomestic T. guasayana abundance in the rural community of Amamá were expanded to the neighbouring community of Trinidad in northwestern Argentina. The distribution of T. guasayana in domiciles, peridomiciles (storerooms, chicken coops and corrals) and natural habitats (bromeliads, dry cacti and logs) around houses (i.e. 'semi-sylvatic' habitats) was analysed. The distribution of the 316 T. guasayana specimens collected in domestic and peridomestic sites during 1993–2002 was significantly clustered in both communities. Searches confirmed that the spatial distribution of semi-sylvatic and peridomestic T. guasayana was determined by the joint effects of the local abundance of goats and the density of semi-sylvatic habitats. The integration of detailed entomological and demographic longitudinal data with geographic information system data, high-resolution satellite imagery, appropriate spatial and temporal analyses and field observations allowed us to infer the underlying processes determining the distribution of T. guasayana in rural communities. This approach may be applied to other sylvatic and peridomestic vectors of Chagas' disease in order to identify high-risk areas for targeted control or environmental management.  相似文献

In recent years seaweeds increasingly attracted interest in the search for new drugs and have been shown to be a primary source of bioactive natural products including antibiotics. In the present investigation the antimicrobial activity of Gracilariopsis longissima lipidic extract was assayed and its chemical characterization was carried out by means of advanced analytical techniques such as gas-chromatography and multinuclear and multidimensional NMR spectroscopy. G. longissima lipidic extract showed an antibacterial activity against several Vibrio species. These results are interesting considering both the resistance against antibiotics developed by vibrios and the need to control fish and shellfish diseases due to vibriosis. Analysis of fatty acid methyl esters performed by gas-chromatography showed that palmitic acid methyl ester (16:0) was the predominant saturated fatty acid (42%), while, among monounsaturated fatty acids, oleic acid methyl ester (18:1) prevailed (8.5%). Because the palmitic acid represents the main component of fatty acids we hypothesized its involvement in the antibacterial activity observed. However, a pure sample of palmitic acid did not show an antibacterial activity. The fatty acid profile of G. longissima revealed also an interesting composition in polyunsaturated fatty acids and in particular the ratio of ω-3 to ω-6 fatty acids was >1 thus suggesting that this macroalga may be used as a natural source of ω3. Moreover, the (1)H NMR spectrum in CDCl(3) of algal lipid fraction shows the characteristic signals of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids as well as other metabolites. Interestingly, in the lipid extract the presence of polyhydroxybutyrate, a linear biodegradable and biocompatible polyester, was clearly identified by NMR spectroscopy. In conclusion, the lipidic extract of G. longissima on account of its antimicrobial activity, nutritional value and content in biodegradable and biocompatible polyester represents an interesting potential biotechnological resource.  相似文献

In a mechanical component, stress-concentration is one of the factors contributing to reduce fatigue life. This paper presents a design methodology based on shape optimization to improve the fatigue safety factor and increase the radial stiffness of Nitinol self-expandable stent-grafts. A planar lattice free of stress concentrators is proposed for the synthesis of a stent with smooth cell shapes. Design optimization is systematically applied to minimize the curvature and reduce the bending strain of the elements defining the lattice cells. A novel cell geometry with improved fatigue life and radial supportive force is introduced for Nitinol self-expandable stent-grafts used for treating abdominal aortic aneurism. A parametric study comparing the optimized stent-graft to recent stent designs demonstrates that the former exhibits a superior anchoring performance and a reduction of the risk of fatigue failure.  相似文献

Isotope variations were studied in necropolises of the early (6th to 7th century CE) and central (10th to 11th century CE) medieval period located in Fruili‐Venezia Giulia (Northeastern Italy). The two periods each shortly followed two great barbarian invasions that changed the politics and economy of Italy: the arrivals of Langobards in 578 CE and the Hungarian incursions from the end of the 9th to the first half of the 10th century. These events had a tragic effect on the economy of Friuli‐Venezia Giulia: severe depopulation and the partial abandonment of the countryside with fall of agricultural production.
