The COVID-19 pandemic has presented significant challenges and implications for the sports community. Thus, this study aimed to describe the prevalence of COVID-19 in Brazilian athletes and identify the epidemiological, clinical, athletic, life and health factors associated with the disease in these individuals. A cross-sectional study was performed involving 414 athletes from 22 different sports using an online questionnaire from August to November 2020. The association between the athletes’ characteristics and COVID-19 was evaluated using a logistic regression model. The prevalence of COVID-19 was 8.5%, although only 40% of athletes reported having been tested. Being under 27 years of age (3-fold), having children (~5-fold), having a teammate test positive for COVID-19 (2.5-fold), and smoking (14-fold) were associated with a possible higher risk of disease. Almost 20% of athletes self-reported musculoskeletal injuries during the period of the pandemic that was studied. Athletes with a university education (P = 0.02), a profession other than sports (P < 0.001), those from a low-income family (P = 0.01), and public health system users (P = 0.04) were significantly less frequently tested for COVID-19, whereas international competitors, athletes who received a wage, and athletes who had a teammate who tested positive for COVID-19 were 2-, 3-, and 15-fold more likely to be tested for COVID-19, respectively. Approximately 26% of the athletes who tested negative or were untested reported more than three characteristic COVID-19 symptoms, and 11% of athletes who tested positive for COVID-19 were asymptomatic. The identification of modifiable (have children, smoking, and teammates positively tested) and non-modifiable (age under 27 years) factors related to COVID-19 in athletes can contribute to implementing surveillance programmes to decrease the incidence of COVID-19 in athletes and its negative impacts in sports. 相似文献
The present work assessed several exchange-correlation functionals (including GGA, meta-GGA and hybrid functionals), in combination with a variety of basis sets and effective core potentials (ECP) for their ability to predict the ground spin state of Mn(III) meso-tetraphenylporphyrin chloride complex, labeled Mn(III)TPPCl, for which experimental data support the quintet high spin state. Geometry optimization of Mn(III)TPPCl was performed for three possible spin states (singlet state, LS; triplet state, IS; and quintet state, HS) at the TPSSh level using the LANL2DZ ECP for Mn and the 6-311G(d) basis set for C, N, Cl and H. Afterwards, single-point energy calculations were conducted by applying 18 exchange-correlation functionals (BLYP, B3LYP, PW91, BPW91, BP86, OLYP, OPBE, OPW91, O3LYP, PBE0, PBEh1PBE, HSEH1PBE, TPSS, TPSSh, M06 L, M06, M062X and M06HF). The influence of the basis set for the metal center was assessed using a smaller group of functionals and varying between the Pople basis set 6-31G(d), its newer formulation m6-31G(d) and the larger Def2-QZVP basis set. All functionals in combination with Pople basis sets predict the quintet state as the ground spin state. In addition, the BLYP, BP86, BPW91, PW91, PBEh1PBE, TPSS and TPSSh functionals predicted the IS lying at most ~60 kJ mol?1 above the HS, which agrees with the reference data. Results including Def2-QZVP basis set were inconsistent, since only BLYP and B3LYP predict HS as the ground spin state. The recommended methodology for the treatment of such systems seems to be exchange-correlations functionals with few or none Hartree-Fock exchange and modest size basis sets.
Microcystins (MCs) produced by some freshwater cyanobacterial species possess potent liver toxicity as evidenced by acute neutrophil infiltration. Here, we investigate the ability of three structurally distinct toxins (MC-LA, MC-LR, and MC-YR) to evoke neutrophil recruitment per se and their effects on migration pathways. Intravital microscopic studies showed that topical application of only MC-LR enhanced the numbers of rolling and adhered leukocytes in the endothelium of postcapillary mesenteric venules. The latter effects may be dependent upon induction of the synthesis and expression of l-selectin and β2-integrin in neutrophils, as assessed by flow cytometry and RT-PCR, respectively. Conversely, the three toxins promoted direct locomotion of neutrophils and enhanced their migration in response to fMLP, as measured by Boyden chamber assays, and increased intracellular calcium, a messenger in the chemotaxic process. In conclusion, our results show that MCs act on specific pathways of neutrophil recruitment, indicating their potential effect on neutrophils activation. 相似文献

species—Paramecium tetraurelia and Tetrahymena thermophila—that reassign the stop codons TAA and TAG to glutamine, for the presence of tandem stop codons. We show that there are more
tandem stop codons downstream of both Paramecium and Tetrahymena genes than expected by chance given the base composition of the downstream regions. This excess of tandem stop codons is
larger in Tetrahymena and Paramecium than in yeast. We propose that this might be caused by a higher frequency of stop codon read-through in these species than
in yeast, possibly because of a leaky termination machinery resulting from stop codon reassignment. 相似文献
Saliva of haematophagous arthropods contain biomolecules involved directly or indirectly with the haematophagy process, and among them are encountered some complement system inhibitors. The most obvious function for these inhibitors would be the protection of the midgut against injury by the complement. To investigate this hypothesis, Triatoma brasiliensis nymphs were forced to ingest human serum in conditions in which the protection of midgut by the inhibitors is bypassed. In these conditions, the anterior midgut epithelium was injured by the complement, causing cell death. Once some insects such as Aedes aegypti have no salivary inhibitors, we hypothesized the existence of intestinal inhibitors. The inhibitory activity was investigated in the intestine of A. aegypti as well as in the saliva and intestine of other three triatomine species (T. brasiliensis, T. infestans and Rhodnius prolixus) using an immunological method able to determine the level of deposition of some complement factors (C1q, C3b, or C4b) on the surface of complement activator molecules linked to microplates. This methodology permitted to identify which points along the activation phase of the complement cascade were inhibited. As expected, soluble contents of A. aegypti''s intestine was capable to inhibit C3b deposition by the classical and alternative pathways. Saliva or soluble intestinal contents, obtained from triatomines were unable to inhibit C1q deposition by the classical pathway. C4b deposition by the classical pathway was inhibited by the intestinal contents from the three triatomines. On the other hand, only T. brasiliensis saliva inhibited C4b deposition. Both, saliva and intestinal contents from all triatomines were able to inhibit C3b deposition in the classical and alternative pathways. None of the material extracted from the intestinal cell membranes from the triatomines inhibited C3b deposition in the classical pathway. The existence of complement inhibitors may have important biological consequences which are discussed in detail. 相似文献
Riparian forests are highly valued for maintaining water quality through the retention of sediments and nutrients. They also
provide some of the most diverse and species-rich habitats in the world. What is largely unknown, however, is how sediment
deposition affects plant community composition in these forests. The objective of this study was to examine changes in plant
community composition across a gradient of increasing rates of sedimentation in riparian forests in the southeastern Coastal
Plain, USA. Seventeen plots were established within riparian forests receiving between 0 and 5.5 cm year−1 of sediment deposits. Species density and biomass estimates were collected annually from 2002 to 2006 for overstory and mid-story
plant species within each plot. Percent cover and nested frequency of understory plant species were determined annually during
2004–2006. Measures of community composition in the understory, mid-story, and overstory layers of forests were compared to
changes in environmental factors associated with increased sedimentation. In the understory, annual, exotic, and upland species
had higher importance values in plots receiving high sediment deposition. The densities of shade-intolerant and N-fixing species
in the mid-story also increased with increasing sedimentation rates. Increased overstory mortality was associated with high
sedimentation rates, though increases in understory light levels in these gaps were not the main driver of understory species
changes. Edaphic factors, such as soil texture, moisture, and temperature, were significantly correlated to species composition
in all three forest layers, suggesting that changes in soil physical structure due to sedimentation may drive community-level

Spliced leader trans-splicing is an mRNA maturation process used by a small set of eukaryotes, including the nematode C. elegans, to cap the downstream genes of operons. We analyzed the frequency of duplication of operonic genes in C. elegans and confirmed that they are duplicated less often in the genome than monocistronic genes. Because operons account for about
15% of the genes in C. elegans, this lower duplication frequency might place a large constraint on the plasticity of the genome. Further analyses suggest
that this paucity of duplicated genes results from operon organization hindering specific types of gene duplication.
