Sexual differentiation of rat liver carbonic anhydrase III

Using radioimmunoassay, the concentration of carbonic anhydrase III in the livers of adult male rats was found to be approx. 30-times greater than that observed in mature females. Castration of male rats led to a marked reduction in liver carbonic anhydrase III concentrations which could be partially restored to control levels by testosterone replacement. Administration of testosterone to ovariectomised female rats induced about a 5-fold increase in liver carbonic anhydrase III concentration. Immunoprecipitation analysis of the products of liver mRNA translation in vitro with antiserum specific for carbonic anhydrase III showed that hormonal control of the levels of carbonic anhydrase III in liver is mediated by changes in the amount of translatable carbonic anhydrase III mRNA. Marked changes in liver carbonic anhydrase III concentrations were also observed in developing and ageing male rats.     

Postoperative Depression of Tumour-directed Cell-mediated Immunity in Patients with Malignant Disease

Leucocytes from 46 melanoma patients, 45 breast carcinoma patients, and 95 control donors were tested by the leucocyte migration test against the supernatants of homogenates of malignant melanomas, breast carcinomas, simple breast tumours, and breasts showing simple cystic disease. By comparison with controls inhibition of migration occurred significantly more frequently when tumour patients'' leucocytes were exposed to extracts of histogenetically similar tumours.Cell-mediated immunity to tumour-associated antigens was measured in 12 patients with breast carcinoma and 12 with malignant melanoma immediately before surgical operation and in the postoperative period. All patients tested before operation showed significant inhibition of migration on contact with extracts of histogenetically similar tumours. Postoperatively the degree of leucocyte migration inhibition was reduced in all patients with melanoma and breast carcinoma. Significant inhibition of leucocyte migration returned in most patients 6-22 days after operation.     

Computer-aided Diagnosis of Acute Abdominal Pain

This paper reports a controlled prospective unselected real-time comparison of human and computer-aided diagnosis in a series of 304 patients suffering from abdominal pain of acute onset.The computing system''s overall diagnostic accuracy (91·8%) was significantly higher than that of the most senior member of the clinical team to see each case (79·6%). It is suggested as a result of these studies that the provision of such a system to aid the clinician is both feasible in a real-time clinical setting, and likely to be of practical value, albeit in a small percentage of cases.     

The behaviour of 14C profiles in Helianthus seedlings

Summary The log. ¹⁴C activity/distance profile in the stems of Helianthus seedlings consists of two main parts: region 1, the linear advancing front and region 2, which is also linear but with a less steep slope. As the front passes down the stem, the slope of region 1 remains constant but the amplitude of the front becomes attenuated. The attenuation increases with temperature. The apparent velocity of the profile, which can be derived from the position of the front, is also temperature dependent. Small amounts of ¹⁴C occur in the stem ahead of the profile; these amounts increase with a rise of temperature. Region 2 behaves differently: its slope decreases steadily with time but it is insensitive to temperature. The behaviour of this region is dependent on the movement of tracer into an immobile fraction as well as on the longitudinal movement of tracer in the translocation stream.     

Further observations on the effect of ethionine on the synthesis of β-galactosidase inEscherichia coli: Formation of an immunologically cross-reacting protein

It was found that ethionine partially inhibits the transport of the inducer (TMG) of β-galactosidase into the cells ofEscherichia coli ML-30. The synthesis of β-galactosidase-specific messenger RNA is not inhibited. Ethionine appears to be incorporated into proteins synthesized by the strains used. The incorporation of ethionine into the molecule of β-galactosidase results in the synthesis of an enzymically inactive, immunologically cross-reacting protein.     

Ultraviolet Inactivation and Photoproducts of Transforming DNA Irradiated at Low Temperatures

Solutions of Haemophilus influenzae transforming DNA were irradiated at temperatures ranging from 25°C to - 196°C. Temperature dependence of the formation of thymine-containing dimers was closely correlated with inactivation of transforming activity; in general, both dimerization and inactivation decreased with decreasing temperature. The fraction of nonphotoreactivable damage increased with increasing dose at low temperatures. The nonphotoreactivable spore-type photoproduct was formed at low temperatures with a maximum at - 100°C, a temperature at which the nonphotoreactivable biological inactivation was also a maximum. Intrastrand cross-linking, like dimer formation, decreased with decreasing irradiation temperature.     

The conversion of injected glucose into renal glycogen and mucopolysaccharides

Summary Tritiated glucose has been injected into rabbits in various states of hydration. The renal papilla of all animals showed an uptake of the label, converted into glycogen, and into mucopolysaccharides, in a manner dependent on the water balance of the animal.In papillae of control animals, the glycogen of the collecting duct epithelial cells and the mucopolysaccharides of the interstitium were labelled.In papillae of animals in an aqueous diuresis, the collecting duct glycogen was lightly labelled and there was no label over the interstitium.Antidiuretic hormone caused a diversion of label from the collecting ducts into interstitial mucopolysaccharides.The significance of these findings, with respect to renal concentrating ability, is discussed.The author wishes to thank Dr. M.
