Adipose tissue is an important retinoid depot and retinoids are known to influence white and brown adipocyte metabolism. Identifying nutrients that can affect the biological activity of the adipose organ would be of great medical interest in the light of the current obesity epidemic and related disorders in developed countries. The vast majority of mammal studies of chronic administration of oral beta-carotene have used murine models, while few have employed mammals exhibiting uptake and processing of intestinal beta-carotene similar to those of humans. While rodents transform practically all ingested beta-carotene into retinol, in ferrets, as in humans, part of the beta-carotene is absorbed and released into the circulation intact. We studied the effects of 6-month daily administration of two doses of oral beta-carotene (0.8 or 3.2 mg/kg/day) on ferret body weight, size of body fat depots, and, using morphological and morphometric methods, on subcutaneous (inguinal) white adipose tissue (WAT). Because of the oral mode of administration, liver, stomach, and small and large intestine were also studied. Control animals received the vehicle. Data show that at the end of treatment the higher dose induced significantly higher body weight compared with controls and significantly higher inguinal fat depot compared with animals treated with the lower dose. In addition, chronic treatment with beta-carotene induced a dose-dependent hypertrophy of white adipocytes and increased neoangiogenesis in subcutaneous WAT in all treated ferrets. Vasculogenesis was independent of adipocyte hypertrophy. We also found focally evident liver steatosis in the ferrets treated with the higher dose of beta-carotene. The other gastrointestinal tract organs studied were not significantly different from those of control animals.  相似文献

The rising need for wholesome, fresh, safe and “minimally-processed” foods has led to pioneering research activities in the emerging non-thermal technology of food processing. Cold plasma is such an innovative and promising technology that offers several potential applications in the food industry. It uses the highly reactive, energetic and charged gas molecules and species to decontaminate the food and package surfaces and preserve the foods without causing thermal damage to the nutritional and quality attributes of food. Cold plasma technology showed promising results about the inactivation of pathogens in the food industry without affecting the food quality. It is highly effective for surface decontamination of fruits and vegetables, but extensive research is required before its commercial utilization. Recent patents are focused on the applications of cold plasma in food processing and preservation. However, further studies are strongly needed to scale up this technology for future commercialization and understand plasma physics for getting better results and expand the applications and benefits. This review summarizes the emerging trends of cold plasma along with its recent applications in the food industry to extend shelf life and improve the quality of food. It also gives an overview of plasma generation and principles including mechanism of action. Further, the patents based on cold plasma technology have also been highlighted comprehensively for the first time.  相似文献

Esophageal material for cytologic smears was obtained by the gel-foam technique from an 84-year-old man with dysphagia and symptoms of obstruction in whom initial attempts at endoscopic biopsy were nondiagnostic. The smears contained cells with koilocytotic atypia, similar to those described in smears from uterine cervix lesions produced by human papilloma virus. The cytologic diagnosis of an esophageal papilloma of viral origin was confirmed by the second biopsy. A third biopsy, from a lower level of the esophagus following dilatation procedures, revealed an epidermoid carcinoma in situ contiguous with the papilloma.  相似文献

Vessel collision is a threat to many whale species, and the risk has increased with expanding maritime traffic. This compromises international conservation efforts and requires urgent attention from the world's maritime industry. Humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) are at the top of the death toll, and although Central America is a wintering area for populations from both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, existing efforts to reduce ship‐whale collisions are meager. Herein, we evaluated the potential collisions between vessels and humpback whales wintering off Pacific Panama by following the movements of 15 whales tagged with satellite transmitters and comparing these data with tracks plotted using AIS real‐time latitude‐longitude points from nearly 1,000 commercial vessels. Movements of whales (adults and calves) in the Gulf of Panama coincide with major commercial maritime routes. AIS vessel data analyzed for individual whale satellite tracks showed that 53% (8 whales) of whales had 98 encounters within 200 m with 81 different vessels in just 11 d. We suggest implementing a 65 nmi Traffic Separation Scheme and a 10 kn maximum speed for vessel routing into the Gulf of Panama during the wintering season. In so doing, the area for potential whale‐vessel collisions could be reduced by 93%.  相似文献

“Lipid raft aging” in nerve cells represents an early event in the development of aging-related neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease. Lipid rafts are key elements in synaptic plasticity, and their modification with aging alters interactions and distribution of signaling molecules, such as glutamate receptors and ion channels involved in memory formation, eventually leading to cognitive decline. In the present study, we have analyzed, in vivo, the effects of dietary supplementation of n-3 LCPUFA on the lipid structure, membrane microviscosity, domain organization, and partitioning of ionotropic and metabotropic glutamate receptors in hippocampal lipid raffs in female mice. The results revealed several lipid signatures of “lipid rafts aging” in old mice fed control diets, consisting in depletion of n-3 LCPUFA, membrane unsaturation, along with increased levels of saturates, plasmalogens, and sterol esters, as well as altered lipid relevant indexes. These changes were paralleled by increased microviscosity and changes in the raft/non-raft (R/NR) distribution of AMPA-R and mGluR5. Administration of the n-3 LCPUFA diet caused the partial reversion of fatty acid alterations found in aged mice and returned membrane microviscosity to values found in young animals. Paralleling these findings, lipid rafts accumulated mGluR5, NMDA-R, and ASIC2, and increased their R/NR proportions, which collectively indicate changes in synaptic plasticity. Unexpectedly, this diet also modified the lipidome and dimension of lipid rafts, as well as the domain redistribution of glutamate receptors and acid-sensing ion channels involved in hippocampal synaptic plasticity, likely modulating functionality of lipid rafts in memory formation and reluctance to age-associated cognitive decline.  相似文献
