Coastal lagoons are usually subjected to several kinds of human impacts, especially eutrophication. The breaching of the sand bar, which separates the lagoon from the ocean, by human action, is a common process used to decrease the negative effects of eutrophication. The aims of this research were to evaluate the effects of the artificial sand bar breaching on the populations of the aquatic macrophyte Typha domingensis and the subsequent effects on nutrients concentration in a tropical coastal lagoon. Samplings were carried out monthly from February/01 to January/02 in a monospecific stand of T. domingensis at Imboassica lagoon (Rio de Janeiro/Brazil). Two sampling sites, in the middle and in the border of the stand, were marked in three different transects. Water depth was measured and the aerial biomass sampled with a 0.25 m2 quadrat. The macrophyte samples were separated into live and dead material and the shoot length, shoot density and number of leaves were analyzed. All plant material was oven dried till constant weight and net primary production, dead stand crop production and the nutrients release through decomposition were estimated at each site. The decrease in water level due to sand bar opening affected negatively T. domingensis populations, but the most intense effects were observed in the middle of the stand. The shoot mortality was highly enhanced after the sand bar breaching and the nutrients were released through decomposition to the water column. It reflected on an input of 11.5 kg C m−2, 0.22 kg N m−2 and 0.13 kg P m−2 into the lagoon, which represent from 22.5 to 44.8 ton P and 35.9 to 71.8 ton N to the lagoon. The decrease of nutrients concentration after the sand bar breaching was not successfully accomplished. The decay of T. domingensis stands due to the sand bar breaching neutralized the exportation of nutrients to the ocean, and contributed to the phosphorous increase in the water column. Thus, to a better management of aquatic ecosystems subjected to human eutrophication, the role of aquatic macrophytes decomposition on internal fertilization of aquatic ecosystems should be accounted.  相似文献

The chemical investigation of Azorean nudibranch mollusk Tambja ceutae led us to isolate a new member of the tambjamine family, tambjamine K (1). The bryozoan Bugula dentata, prey of the nudibranch, was also analyzed and found to contain compound 1 in very small amounts together with known blue pigment 2 and tambjamines A (3) and B (4). The structure of tambjamine 1 was elucidated by the interpretation of the spectroscopic data as well as by the comparison with related compounds. Compounds 1 and 2 possess antiproliferative activity, in particular, tambjamine K (1) displayed high cytotoxicity against both tumor and non-tumor mammalian cells.  相似文献

This work describes the preparation of new chelating materials derived from sugarcane bagasse for adsorption of heavy metal ions in aqueous solution. The first part of this report deals with the chemical modification of sugarcane bagasse with succinic anhydride. The carboxylic acid functions introduced into the material were used to anchor polyamines, which resulted in two yet unpublished modified sugarcane bagasse materials. The obtained materials were characterized by elemental analysis and infrared spectroscopy (IR). The second part of this reports features the comparative evaluation of the adsorption capacity of the modified sugarcane bagasse materials for Cu(2+), Cd(2+), and Pb(2+) ions in aqueous single metal solution by classical titration. Adsorption isotherms were studied by the Freundlich and Langmuir models.  相似文献

Cardiovascular diseases are the number one cause of death globally and are projected to remain the single leading cause of death. Treatment options abounds, although efficacy is limited. Recent studies attribute discrete and ephemeral benefits to adult stem cell therapies, indicating the urge to improve stem cell based–therapy. In this study, we show that priming mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) towards cardiomyogenic lineage enhances their beneficial effects in vivo as treatment option for acute phase myocardial infarction. MSC were primed using cardiomyogenic media for 4 days, after which peak expression of key cardiomyogenic genes are reached and protein expression of Cx‐43 and sarcomeric α‐actinin are observed. MSC and primed MSC (pMSC) were characterized in vitro and used to treat infarcted rats immediately after left anterior descending (LAD) occlusion. Echocardiography analysis indicated that MSC‐treated myocardium presented discrete improvement in function, but it also showed that pMSC treatment lead to superior beneficial results, compared with undifferentiated MSC. Seven days after cell injection, MSC and pMSC could still be detected in the myocardium. Connexin‐43 expression was quantified through immunoblotting, and was superior in pMSC, indicating that this could be a possible explanation for the superior performance of pMSC therapy.  相似文献

Dizygostemon riparius (Plantaginaceae) is an aromatic herbal species known as “Melosa”, endemic to the Municipality of São Benedito do Rio Preto, East Maranhão state, Brazil. It has a refreshing and pleasant aroma and is used for food flavoring and controlling domestic animal parasites. This work aimed to evaluate the seasonal and circadian influence on the composition and production of essential oils (EOs) from D. riparius. The plant aerial parts were hydrodistilled, and the oils were analyzed by GC and GC/MS. The seasonal study was conducted from August 2019 to July 2020, and the circadian study in dry (November) and rainy (May) periods, at 6 am, 12 am, and 6 pm. The results showed that the medium EOs yield was 2.8 %, and the primary constituents (>2 %) were endo-fenchyl acetate (30.5–42.1 %) and endo-fenchol (31.6–37.4 %), (E)-caryophyllene (2.8–7.6 %), α-fenchene (3.3–6.5 %), p-cymene (0.7–4.5 %), and caryophyllene oxide (1.4–2.7 %). Yield and composition of EOs did not significantly correlate with the climatic parameters, but their seasonal percentages influenced their two main components due to precipitation and solar radiation environmental factors. Quantitative variability in the EOs composition during the dry and rainy seasons was observed in the circadian period. These data may be significant for the plant's economic use.  相似文献

In the course of an infection, the formation of reactive oxygen species by phagocytes and the antioxidant defense mechanisms of microorganisms play a crucial role in pathogenesis. In this study, isolates representing 8 pathogenic Candida species—Candida albicans, Candida dubliniensis, Candida famata, Candida glabrata, Candida guilliermondii, Candida krusei, Candida parapsilosis and Candida tropicalis—were compared with regard to their resistance to oxidative stress in vitro. We evaluated degree of resistance, induction of oxidative damage, capacity to adapt, and induction of antioxidant enzymes. The species showed variable sensitivity to oxidative attack. C. albicans, C. glabrata, and C. krusei were more resistant to oxidative stress under the conditions tested; C. parapsilosis and C. tropicalis presented medium resistance; and C. dubliniensis, C. famata, and C. guilliermondii were more sensitive. The overall greater resistance to oxidative stress of C. albicans and C. glabrata may provide an advantage to these species, which are the major causative agents of candidiasis.  相似文献

BackgroundThe National ALS Registry is made up of two components to capture amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) cases: national administrative databases (Medicare, Medicaid, Veterans Health Administration and Veterans Benefits Administration) and self-identified cases captured by the Registry’s web portal. This study describes self-reported characteristics of U.S. adults with ALS using the data collected by the National ALS Registry web portal risk factor surveys only from October 19, 2010 through December 31, 2013.ObjectiveTo describe findings from the National ALS Registry’s web portal risk factor surveys.MeasurementsThe prevalence of select risk factors among adults with ALS was determined by calculating the frequencies of select risk factors—smoking and alcohol (non, current and former) histories, military service and occupational history, and family history of neurodegenerative diseases such as ALS, Alzheimer’s and/or Parkinson’s.ResultsNearly half of survey respondents were ever smokers compared with nearly 41% of adults nationally. Most respondents were ever drinkers which is comparable to national estimates. The majority were light drinkers. Nearly one-quarter of survey respondents were veterans compared with roughly 9% of US adults nationally. Most respondents were retired or disabled. The industries in which respondents were employed for the longest time were Professional and Scientific and Technical Services. When family history of neurodegenerative diseases in first degree relatives was evaluated against our comparison group, the rates of ALS were similar, but were higher for Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease and any neurodegenerative diseases.ConclusionsThe National ALS Registry web portal, to our knowledge, is the largest, most geographically diverse collection of risk factor data about adults living with ALS. Various characteristics were consistent with other published studies on ALS risk factors and will allow researchers to generate hypotheses for future research.  相似文献

Ecological stoichiometry (ES) and allometry offer frameworks for predicting how nutrient recycling varies within and among animal species. Despite the importance of benthic-derived nutrients in most aquatic systems, predictions based on ES and allometry have been poorly tested among benthic invertebrate consumers. Here, we show that the rates and ratios at which three freshwater benthic invertebrate species (a crustacean, an insect, and a polychaeta) recycled nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) can be partially predicted by ES and allometry depending on whether data are analyzed intra- or interspecifically. Mass-specific N and P excretion rates were negatively correlated with invertebrate body size both among and within taxa, supporting allometric predictions. However, mass-specific N and P excretion rates were positively and negatively correlated to invertebrate body N and P, respectively, but only when data were analyzed intraspecifically. As a corollary, the mass-specific N:P excretion ratio was positively related to body N:P ratio. Such a contrasting pattern on excretion-mediated N and P recycling suggests that stoichiometric constraints regarding consumer-resource imbalances for the three species utilized in this study may be stronger for P than for N. Our results indicate that the variation in nutrient recycling, which is mediated by taxonomic constraints on stoichiometry and allometry, may substantially help us to understand the importance of benthic detritivorous species to the functioning of aquatic ecosystems.  相似文献

1. We have investigated the effect of tityus gamma (TiTX ) scorpion toxin on the release of [3H] dopamine in rat brain prefrontal cortical slices. The stimulatory effect of TiTX on the release of [3H]dopamine was dose/time-dependent with an EC50 of 0.01M.2. Tetrodotoxin blocked the TiTX -induced release of [3H]dopamine, indicating the dependency for Na+ channels.3. EGTA had no effect on the TiTX -induced release of [3H]dopamine, indicating the process is independent of extracellular calcium. Release of [3H]dopamine evoked by TiTX was inhibited by 57% by BAPTA, a chelator of intracellular calcium.4. Xestospongin and 2-APB, putative blockers of IP3-sensitive release of intracellular calcium stores, caused an equal and significant inhibition of 24% of the TiTX -induced release of [3H]dopamine, while the slight inhibition evoked by dantrolene, a putative blocker of ryanodine-sensitive calcium store was not significant.5. Nomifensine and ascorbic acid, blockers of dopamine transporter (DAT), caused an inhibition of 27 and 29%, respectively, on the toxin-induced release of [3H]dopamine suggesting that most of the TiTX -induced release of dopamine is not due to the reversal of Na+ gradient.6. In conclusion the majority of the TiTX -induced release of [3H]dopamine is exocytotic and mobilizes calcium from the intracellular IP3-sensitive calcium stores.  相似文献
