In many aquatic animals, predator avoidance can be stimulated by chemical cues, including those released by injured prey (alarm cues). Alarm cues of both conspecific and heterospecific origin have been identified within several fish taxa, where phylogenetic conservation of the cue-response complex is common. Turbellarian flatworms (planaria) are among the simplest animals known to respond to chemical cues released by injured conspecifics. We examined how two locally sympatric planaria species respond to conspecific and heterospecific chemical cues using macerated tissue suspensions. Brown (Girardia tigrina) and black (Dugesia dorotocephala) planaria both exhibited avoidance behavior when presented conspecific cues. Despite a significant twofold difference in body size (black > brown), stimulus prepared from a single (1×) individual of either species elicited avoidance. Increasing brown planaria cue concentration by macerating two individuals (2×) produced a significant increase in conspecific avoidance. Heterospecific stimuli produced asymmetric results. Black planaria avoided the brown planaria stimulus, but only in the higher concentration (2×) trials. Brown planaria did not consistently exhibit avoidance of the black planaria stimulus and some brown subjects approached and consumed black planarian tissues. Our results expand the demonstrated occurrence of alarm cues among planaria and suggest that avoidance behavior can be mediated by multiple environmental and intrinsic factors in freshwater Turbellaria.  相似文献

A coevolutionary model of species packing is developed which allows evolutionary adjustment in both niche position and within-phenotype niche width of from one of three competing species. The environment is specified as a single resource dimension x and availability of resources along x is given by a Gaussian curve with parameters (x?Rand σR). The model predicts that for S species the ratio of optimal niche width (?) to σR is roughly independent of σR and can be approximated by 1S when the competitors are completely resource limited. Niche separation (d?w?) increases only moderately with increases in resource diversity σR and is greater for two than for three competing species. To the extent that the competitors do not utilize all resources, both optimal niche separation and niche width decrease. Many of the general trends in niche width and niche separation predicted by this coevolutionary model parallel those from optimal foraging theory and limiting similarity models of community structure. The coevolutionary model stands out, however, in the singularly high values predicted for niche separation, making coevolved communities highly invadeable. Hence, the theory suggests, as some empirical evidence indicates, that coevolved competition communities can only exist as such on remote islands or in other habitats which might be free from invasion by outside species. For such communities, resource diversity (σR) should have much less effect on species packing than either species number itself or the extent that these competitors are resource limited.  相似文献

Resources, sex ratio, and seed production by hermaphrodites covary among natural populations of many gynodioecious plant species, such that they are functionally "more dioecious" as resources become more limiting. Strong correlations among these three factors confound our understanding of their relative roles in maintaining polymorphic sexual systems. We manipulated resource availability and sex ratio and measured their effects on relative fertility and phenotypic selection through the maternal fitness of females and hermaphrodites of Fragaria virginiana. Two results were particularly surprising. First, hermaphrodites showed little variability in fecundity across resource treatments and showed strong positive and context-dependent selection for fruit set. This suggests that variation in hermaphrodite seed production along resource gradients in nature may result from adaptation rather than plasticity. Second, although females increased their fecundity with higher resources, their fertility was unaffected by sex ratio, which is predicted to mediate pollen limitation of females in natural populations where they are common. Selection on petal size of females was also weak, indicating a minimal effect of pollinator attraction on variation in the fertility of female plants. Hence, we found no mechanistic explanation for the complete absence of high-resource high female populations in nature. Despite strong selection for increased fruit set of hermaphrodites, both the strength of selection and its contribution to the maintenance of gynodioecy are severely reduced under conditions where females have high relative fecundity (i.e., low resources and high-female sex ratios). High relative fertility plus high female frequency means that the evolution of phenotypic traits in hermaphrodites (i.e., response to selection via seed function) should be manifested through females because most hermaphrodites will have female mothers. Fruit set was never under strong selection in females; hence, selection to increase fruit set hermaphrodites will be less effective in maintaining their fruiting ability in natural populations with low resources and high female frequency. In sum, both sex ratio and resource availability influence trait evolution indirectly-through their effects on relative fertility of the sexes and patterns of selection. Sex ratio did not impose strong pollen limitation on females but did directly moderate the outcome of natural selection by biasing the maternal sex of the next generation. This direct effect of sex ratio on the manifestation of natural selection is expected to have far greater impact on the evolution of traits, such as seed-producing ability in hermaphrodites and the maintenance of sexual polymorphisms in nature, compared to indirect effects of sex ratio on relative fertility of the sexes.  相似文献

We describe the application of a novel screening approach that combines automated yeast genetics, synthetic genetic array (SGA) analysis, and a high-content screening (HCS) system to examine mitotic spindle morphogenesis. We measured numerous spindle and cellular morphological parameters in thousands of single mutants and corresponding sensitized double mutants lacking genes known to be involved in spindle function. We focused on a subset of genes that appear to define a highly conserved mitotic spindle disassembly pathway, which is known to involve Ipl1p, the yeast aurora B kinase, as well as the cell cycle regulatory networks mitotic exit network (MEN) and fourteen early anaphase release (FEAR). We also dissected the function of the kinetochore protein Mcm21p, showing that sumoylation of Mcm21p regulates the enrichment of Ipl1p and other chromosomal passenger proteins to the spindle midzone to mediate spindle disassembly. Although we focused on spindle disassembly in a proof-of-principle study, our integrated HCS-SGA method can be applied to virtually any pathway, making it a powerful means for identifying specific cellular functions.  相似文献
