Sea urchin deciliation induces thermoresistance and activates the p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase pathway

In this study, we demonstrate by a variety of approaches (ie, morphological analysis, Western blots, immunolocalization, and the use of specific antibodies) that hyperosmotic deciliation stress of sea urchin embryos induces a thermotolerant response. Deciliation is also able to activate a phosphorylation signaling cascade the effector of which might be the p38 stress-activated protein kinase because we found that the administration of the p38 inhibitor SB203580 to sea urchin deciliated gastrula embryos makes the hyperosmotic deciliation stress lethal.     

Immunologically reactive albumin-like protein in human testis and seminal plasma

An immunologically reactive albumin-like protein (albumin) was localized, by an immunostaining technique, in the testis of infertile men (normal spermatogenesis, obstructive azoospermia) at the level of the Sertoli cells and in some cells of the germinal epithelium (secondary spermatocytes and early spermatids). No positive reaction was detectable in prepubertal testis. In vasectomized men, mean seminal albumin values were drastically reduced (by about 80%) in comparison to fertile controls, indicating a probable testicular origin. Mean seminal albumin values were also decreased in patients affected by azoospermia due to a seminiferous tubular lesion (about 40%) and in oligozoospermic patients (about 30%). In the same seminal samples transferrin, an index of Sertoli cell function, was also measured. Albumin and transferrin results were well correlated in the seminal plasma of each group (with the exception of vasectomized subjects), including a group of men with abnormally high concentrations of seminal transferrin. A weak correlation was found between seminal albumin and sperm count. We suggest that the presence of albumin in the human adult testis and in seminal plasma could be related to its ability to transport androgens.

Background  

Glaucoma is a common disease but its molecular etiology is poorly understood. It involves retinal ganglion cell death and optic nerve damage that is often associated with elevated intraocular pressure. Identifying genes that modify glaucoma associated phenotypes is likely to provide insights to mechanisms of glaucoma. We previously reported glaucoma in DBA/2J mice caused by recessive alleles at two loci, isa and ipd, that cause iris stromal atrophy and iris pigment dispersion, respectively. A approach for identifying modifier genes is to study the effects of specific mutations in different mouse strains. When the phenotypic effect of a mutation is modified upon its introduction into a new strain, crosses between the parental strains can be used to identify modifier genes. The purpose of this study was to determine if the effects of the DBA/2J derived isa and ipd loci are modified in strain AKXD-28/Ty.
