Research on the terrestrial C balance focuses largely on measuring and predicting responses of ecosystem‐scale production and respiration to changing temperatures and hydrologic regimes. However, landscape morphology can modify the availability of resources from year to year by imposing physical gradients that redistribute soil water and other biophysical variables within ecosystems. This article demonstrates that the well‐established biophysical relationship between soil respiration and soil moisture interacts with topographic structure to create bidirectional (i.e., opposite) responses of soil respiration to inter‐annual soil water availability within the landscape. Based on soil respiration measurements taken at a subalpine forest in central Montana, we found that locations with high drainage areas (i.e., lowlands and wet areas of the forest) had higher cumulative soil respiration in dry years, whereas locations with low drainage areas (i.e., uplands and dry areas of the forest) had higher cumulative soil respiration in wet years. Our results indicate that for 80.9% of the forest soil respiration is likely to increase during wet years, whereas for 19.1% of the forest soil respiration is likely to decrease under the same hydrologic conditions. This emergent, bidirectional behavior is generated from the interaction of three relatively simple elements (parabolic soil biophysics, the relative distribution of landscape positions, and inter‐annual climate variability), indicating that terrain complexity is an important mediator of the landscape‐scale soil C response to climate. These results highlight that evaluating and predicting ecosystem‐scale soil C response to climate fluctuation requires detailed characterization of biophysical‐topographic interactions in addition to biophysical‐climate interactions.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the stress distribution generated in a veneer restoration of an upper central incisor compared to intact teeth using the finite element analysis after applying a lingual buccal loading at the incisal edge. Methods: Two models were developed: one model contained enamel, dentine, cementum, periodontal ligament, cortical and trabecullar bones, and the other model was a veneer restoration; both models were developed using MSC/Nastran software (MacNeal-Schwendler Corporation, Los Angeles, CA, USA) as the pre- and post-processor. A 10-N load was applied at the incisal edge from the lingual to the buccal side to simulate oral conditions in this area (protrusion). Results: Von Mises stresses were then analysed for three different regions: A-B (enamel elements under the veneer or second enamel layer), A'-B' (buccal enamel and/or veneer element layer) and C-D (lingual enamel elements layer). A higher stress mode was observed for both models at the lingual cervical region. Conclusions: The presence of a veneer restoration on the incisors is a good alternative to mimic the behaviour of enamel under protrusion loading conditions. The use of veneers to replace enamel during rehabilitations is recommended.  相似文献

Eumops glaucinus and Nyctinomops macrotis, the largest molossid bats in Cuba, were investigated. Both species of bats share the same guild in the island and are similar in size, which allow the prediction of overlapping echolocation inventories following both the "vocal plasticity hypothesis" and the "scaling hypothesis." In addition, large body size predicts the emission of low frequency calls in the human audible range. Calls recorded during hunting show that the bats' echolocation repertoires are very similar and of low frequency, with most differences in search calls. Matches were found in the calls' design, duration, slope, bandwidth, and spectral parameters. Statistical differences between search calls are consistent with the predictions from the "scaling hypothesis," considering that E. glaucinus is only slightly larger than N. macrotis. The echolocation calls emitted by both species are in the frequency range below 20-25 kHz, which identifies both species as the only ones with echolocation in the human audible range in Cuba.  相似文献

During the last years native chemical ligation (NCL) gained in popularity as a method allowing the chemical synthesis of large peptides and entire proteins. NCL is particularly well-suited for chemoselective and nondenaturing attachment of biomolecules on solid substrates. In the present work, we show the feasibility of monitoring of peptide synthesis, NCL and its catalysis on silicon oxide modified gold surfaces by surface plasmon resonance (SPR). NCL of a model peptide-bradykinin thioester-was carried out and monitored with a custom-built SPR apparatus. Solid-phase produced bradykinin thioester was ligated to the surface in the presence of variable concentrations of 4-mercaptophenylacetic acid as transthioesterification catalyst. At catalyst concentration of 48 mM and above, the NCL reaction was maximal and identical to the reaction of the purified peptide-mercaptophenylacetic acid thioester. SPR curves indicate typical first-order kinetics with t(1/2) of 81 s for this aryl thioester, but of 104 min for the primary alkyl thioester.  相似文献

We recently compared the HCV polyprotein to the human proteome in order to test whether amino acid sequences unique to the virus could represent immunodominant epitopic determinants of the human humoral immune response against HCV. We identified a relatively limited number of HCV fragments with no/low similarity to the human host that represented exclusive HCV motifs. In this study, the peptides corresponding to low/zero similarity sequences were synthesized and assayed with HCV-infected sera. With different patterns, the synthetic HCV peptides corresponding to low/zero similarity sequences were found to be immunoreactive. In particular, the HCV E1 (315-323) HRMAWDMMM, HCV E2/NS1 (547-555) NWFGCTWMN, and HCV NS5 (2638-2646) YDTRCFDST sequences were immunodominant in the HCV-infected cohort under study. These three peptides correspond to sequences that are endowed with low-similarity to the human proteome, are highly conserved among various HCV strains, and have, potentially, a scarce susceptibility to proteolytic attacks. These data may be of help in defining the multiple factors which concur in the modulation of the human immune response against HCV, eventually providing information for the design of effective anti-HCV vaccines.  相似文献
