Mediterranean beaches are very crowded during summer and, because of the high values of solar UV radiation, the potential risk for human health is relevant. In this study, all-day measurements of biologically effective global and diffuse UV radiation for skin (UVBEeryt) and eye (UVBEpker, UVBEpconj, UVBEcat) disorders were carried out on differently tilted surfaces on a summers day on a Mediterranean beach. The role played by beach umbrellas in protection from excessive sun exposure was also investigated. Erythema, photokeratitis and cataract seem to require almost the same exposure time to reach the risk threshold dose. Under full sunlight, the highest global and diffuse UV values are reached on surfaces normally oriented towards sunlight and on horizontal surfaces, respectively. Over vertical surfaces, at this northern hemisphere site, global and diffuse UV radiation reaches maxima values in the south-facing direction around noon, while maxima values are reached early in the morning and late in the afternoon over surfaces facing east and west, respectively. The quality of the beach umbrellas protection (efficiency in blocking solar UV radiation) varies with surface orientation; the highest efficiency for our specific site and geometrical conditions occurs over horizontal surfaces, with efficiency being least over vertical surfaces when incident radiation values are still relevant. 相似文献

The role of pituitary and sexual hormones in 21 patients with chronic renal failure (CRF) and related impotence and loss of libido who were being treated by hemodialysis and in 15 normal male controls has been studied. In both groups the serum levels of FSH, LH and TSH, PRL before and after injection of both LHRH and TRH were measured as well as the basal levels of Testosterone (T) and Estradiol (E2). The results show similar values for testosterone in both groups and statistically significant higher basal values for FSH, LH, TSH and PRL and lower basal values for E2 in CRF patients. 相似文献

In order to study the effect of obesity or underweight on gonadotropins and steroid hormone levels, serum concentrations of FSH, LH. Testosterone, Estradiol, Estrone, 17-OH-Progesterone and SHBG were measured by RIA in obese, underweight and control women, all menstruating in the follicular phase. Serum concentrations of all parameters measured did not differ significantly in the underweight and control groups. All obese women had higher levels of estrone than the control group, and only obese patients with a body mass index above 39 showed a lower SHBG level than that of the control group. The data suggest that the increased levels of estrone could play a role in the amenorrhea of obese women. 相似文献

Phosphoglycerate mutase and creatine phosphokinase have in mammals three isozymes (types MM, MB and BB) with similar tissue distribution and developmental transition in muscle cells. To assess whether the phenotype and the developmental switch of these isozymes differ in the diverse types of muscle fibers, the enzymatic activities and the isozyme patterns, analyzed by cellulose acetate electrophoresis, have been determined in rat soleus, extensor digitorum longus and gastrocnemius muscles during postnatal development. Both phosphoglycerate mutase and creatine phosphokinase activity increased in the three muscles, the increase in extensor digitorum longus and gastrocnemius being higher than in soleus. For the two enzymes the increase in activity was due to the progressive increment of the muscle-specific forms. It is concluded that whereas phosphoglycerate mutase and creatine phosphokinase type-B subunits are present at similar levels in both type I and type II muscle fibers, phosphoglycerate mutase and creatine phosphokinase type-M subunits exhibit much higher levels in type II fibers. 相似文献

Levels of glucose 1,6-P2 but not fructose 2,6-P2 were found decreased in skeletal muscle of alloxan-diabetic ketotic rats. Administration of both insulin and vanadate restored the altered values without affecting fructose 2,6-P2 concentrations. In normal rats, insulin increased muscle levels of both sugars, and vanadate decreased glucose 1,6-P2 without changing fructose 2,6-P2 levels. Enzymatic activities involved in glucose 1,6-P2 and fructose 2,6-P2 metabolism were not affected under any experimental condition. 相似文献

Insulin-like effects of vanadate on glucokinase activity and fructose 2,6-bisphosphate levels in the liver of diabetic rats 总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Streptozotocin diabetic rats showed more than a 4-fold increase in blood glucose levels, whereas hepatic glycogen, fructose 2,6-bisphosphate concentration, and 6-phosphofructo-2-kinase activity were decreased. The "total" 6-phosphofructo-2-kinase and the "active" (nonphosphorylated) form of the enzyme were decreased to a different extent, resulting in a fall of the "active"/"total" activity ratio. Vanadate administration for a 2-week period restored the altered values in the diabetic rats without modifying significantly in the control animals any of the parameters studied. Glucokinase activity was essentially lacking in the diabetic animals, and vanadate treatment restored the activity to about 65% of its control value, a good correlation between the recovery of the enzyme and the blood glucose level being observed. These results show an insulin-like effect of vanadate in the whole animal and suggest that insulin and vanadate possess similar actions on hepatic intracellular events. 相似文献

Pertussis toxin-sensitive guanine nucleotide-binding regulatory proteins (G proteins) have previously been shown to mediate the zona pellucida-induced acrosome reaction in mammalian sperm. In this study we compared the inhibitory effect of pertussis toxin on the zona-induced acrosome reaction in human spermatozoa with that on the reaction induced by progesterone, another physiological acrosome reaction-promoting stimulus associated with the ovulated oocyte. Up to the concentration of 1 μg/ml, pertussis toxin did not produce any direct effects on the acrosome reaction frequency nor did it influence sperm movement and viability. However, preincubation of spermatozoa with the toxin at a concentration of 100 ng/ml completely abolished the increase in the acrosome reaction frequency upon subsequent exposure to solubilized zona pellucida material. In contrast, the same treatment did not impair the ability of spermatozoa to initiate the acrosome reaction in response to progesterone. Moreover, the preincubation with pertussis toxin did not modify the changes in the intracellular concentration of calcium ions occurring after progesterone addition. Different types of enzymes from yeast and from rabbit muscle which catalyze phosphoryl transfer reactions involved in glucose metabolism differ in their sensitivity to vanadate. Phosph glucomutase and phosphoglycerate mutase are inhibited at the μM range. 2,3-Bisphosphoglycerate phosphatase is completely inhibited by 0.5 mM vanadate. 2,3-Bisphosphoglycerate synthase, hexokinase, phosphoglycerate kinase and fructose-1,6-P2 phosphatase are partially inhibited by mM vanadate. A fermentation process employing precursor-directed biosynthesis is being developed for the manufacture of 6-deoxyerythronolide B (6-dEB) analogues. Through a plasmid-based system in Streptomyces coelicolor, 6-dEB synthesis is catalyzed by 6-dEB synthase (DEBS). 6-dEB synthesis is abolished by inactivation of the ketosynthase (KS) 1 domain of DEBS but can be restored by providing synthetic activated diketides. Because of its inherent catalytic flexibility, the KS1-deficient DEBS is capable of utilizing unnatural diketides to form various 13-substituted 6-dEBs. Here we characterize process variables associated with diketide feeding in shake-flask experiments. 13-R-6-dEB production was found to depend strongly on diketide feed concentrations, on the growth phase of cultures at feeding time, and on the R-group present in the diketide moiety. In all cases a major portion of the fed diketides was degraded by the cells. 相似文献
