Exudate-feeding byCallithrix jacchus penicillata in semideciduous woodland (Cerradão) in central Brazil

We report the exudate feeding behavior of two groups of marmosets (Callithrix jacchus penicillata) living permanently in Cerradão, a common woodland formation of Central Brazil. Cerradão is an open canopy formation and marmosets must occasionally descend to the ground in order to move from tree to tree. Even in atypical habitat, exudate eating is the predominant foraging activity. Marmosets are engaged in exudate collection over 70% of the total time spent feeding. They were observed gnawing on seven species of trees, and consumed exudates from four of these species. We compared the degree of utilization of the exudate sources, and examined a number of different characteristics of the exudates. Morphological adaptations that allow for the exploitation of the “exudate-eater niche” may be an important component of the adaptability ofCallithrix marmosets.     

Prenatal diagnosis of cystic fibrosis by assay of amniotic fluid microvillar enzymes

Summary Activities of the microvillar enzymes -glutamyl-transpeptidase (GGTP), aminopeptidase M (APM), phosphodiesterase and maltase have been examined in second-trimester amniotic fluid as possible aids to the early prenatal diagnosis of cystic fibrosis (CF). The two peptidases, GGTP and APM, gave best results. If the fifth percentile of the normal range is used as an action line, the sensitivity of a positive test (low GGTP value) is 78% and the predictability 84%. At the tenth percentile the sensitivity is 100% and the predictability 77%. These approximate figures apply only to pregnancies where there has been a previous affected child. Until the primary protein defect in CF is discovered, this may prove an acceptable form of prenatal diagnosis to the high-risk mother.     

Pelvic visceral arteries of rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus)]

40 pelvic preparations of rabbits (oryctolagus cuniculus) were bilaterally studied by dissection under the stereomicroscope and angiography. The arterial pattern of the pelvis, i.e. origin and branching of the umbilical, urogenital and internal pudendal arteries (visceral branches), is described. The main characteristics observed are as follows: (1) The umbilical artery is permeable in adults and gives origin to the cranial vesical artery and a caudal branch that irrigates the pelvic urogenital organs and, eventually, the rectum, with six patterns of branching in both sexes. (2) Usually, the urogenital artery is the continuation of the visceral branch of the internal iliac artery. In 1 animal, unilaterally, it arises from the median sacral artery. In 12 animals (6 bilaterally and 6 unilaterally) the urogenital artery is absent. When present, it forms two branches, a cranial and a caudal one, that irrigate of the urogenital organs in both sexes. (3) The internal pudendal artery is the direct continuation of the internal iliac artery and gives to rise to some visceral branches that irrigate the penis, bulbourethral gland and rectum (with six patterns of branching) in males, and the vagina, clitoris and rectum (with three patterns of branching) in females.     

Aliphatic hydrocarbons as biological markers in 250-million-year-old rock salt deposits near Kassel,West Germany

Organic matter sedimented within salt deposits from the Carboniferous Perm epoch has been investigated for hydrocarbons by gas-liquid-chromatography, mass spectrometry, and spectropolarimetry. Main constituents were made of aliphatic and olefinic hydrocarbons which retained a considerable part of their optical activity thus resisting complete racemization over 250 mio years.     

A family with a satellited Yq chromosome

Summary A large pedigree with a satellited Yq chromosome is described, Q, C, and NOR banding were performed. Family C proband suffers from a Klinefelter syndrome.     

Analytical strategies for therapeutic monitoring of drugs and metabolites in biological fluids : Plenary lecture

Therapeutic drug monitoring can involve quantitation in either microgram, nanogram or picogram concentrations present in a complex biological matrix (whole blood, urine or tissue).The chemical structure of a compound influences not only the analytical method best suited to its quantitation, but also its acid/base character (PK_a) and its extractability. The dose administered, the bioavailability of the dosage form, and the pharmacokinetic profile of the drug govern the circulating concentrations of either the parent drug and/or its metabolites present in vivo, and dictate the ultimate sensitivity and specificity required of the analytical method.The degree of sample preparation required is dependent on the analytical method used (gas—liquid chromatography, thin-layer chromatography, high-performance liquid chromatography) and on the tolerance of the specific type of detection system to contamination. Factors leading to compound losses during sample preparation (adsorption, stability) are critical at low concentrations and can adversely affect the reliability of an assay, therefore maximizing the overall recovery of the assay is essential not only for high sensitivity but also for good precision and accuracy. Therefore, the criteria to be used in sample preparation should aim to optimize all of the above factors in the overall development of a reliable and validated method for the compound suitable for use in clinical therapeutic monitoring.     

Living immobilized Acetobacter in Ca-alginate in vinegar production: Perliminary study on optimum conditions for immobilization

Summary The optimum conditions forAcetobacter immobilization were investigated. The results show that: 1) the maximum oxygen uptake rate (OURm) and cell release are related to alginate and cell concentration in the gel; 2)different alginate concentration does not affect cell viability, but long storage in CaCl₂ reduces the number of living cells; 3)the double alginate gel layers had no influence on cell viability and on the OURm and prevented cell leakage from the gel matrix.     

Trehalase activity and its regulation during growth of Saccharomyces cerevisiae.

Trehalase activity decreased in 95% at the onset of the transition phase of growth of S. cerevisiae. The question which we raised was whether this phenomenon was due to proteolysis or to conversion of the enzyme to a less active form (dephosphorylation). Immunological methods allowed to identify the presence of the trehalase protein during cell growth. At the same stage of growth, an increase in the non-phosphorylated enzyme was detected "in vitro". Results utilizing mutant strains also indicated that regulation occurred by interconversion of forms. The same mechanism also seems to control trehalase activity in non proliferating conditions.
