This prospective study attempted to determine if nonreversible occlusive vascular changes in the skin contribute to skin slough after rhytidectomy. The dermal microvasculature from 83 consecutive rhytidectomies was evaluated for intimal proliferation and/or hyalin sclerosis. Occlusive vascular disease increased progressively with age in all patients, but smokers and ex-smokers had significantly greater involvement than nonsmokers at any given age (p = 0.03). Severe occlusive vascular disease and skin slough were associated (p = 0.02), and there was a strong trend toward an association between active smoking and skin slough (p = 0.06). Among smokers, there was a significant relationship between skin slough and failure to abstain from smoking postoperatively (p = 0.006). We conclude that with aging, nonreversible occlusive changes develop in the dermal microvasculature. These changes appear to be accelerated by cigarette smoking. Our data, however, show that these nonreversible occlusive vascular changes by themselves do not completely account for the occurrence of skin slough after rhytidectomy.  相似文献

The identification of prompt lactose-fermenting gram-negative rods has generally relied heavily upon colonial morphology coupled with one or more indole, methyl red, Voges-Proskauer, citrate (IMViC) parameters, hydrogen sulfide, and motility. Studies were undertaken to compare diagnoses dependent solely upon the more orthodox criteria to a system for identification based upon hydrogen sulfide, ornithine decarboxylase, and citrate utilization (HOC). The results suggest that the IMViC scheme of identification is neither consistent nor applicable when applied to the current nomenclature of the above group of organisms and should be discarded, whereas the HOC system may prove to be of significant value to clinical microbiologists.  相似文献

An unusual fumarate reductase was purified from cell extracts of Methanobacterium thermoautotrophicum and partially characterized. Two coenzymes previously isolated from cell extracts, 2-mercaptoethane-sulfonic acid (HS-CoM) and N-(7-mercaptoheptanoyl)threonine-O3-phosphate (HS-HTP), were established as direct electron donors for fumarate reductase. By measuring the consumption of free thiol, we determined that fumarate reductase catalyzed the oxidation of HS-CoM and HS-HTP; by the direct measurement of succinate and the heterodisulfide of HS-CoM and HS-HTP (CoM-S-S-HTP), we established that these compounds were products of the fumarate reductase reaction. A number of thiol-containing compounds did not function as substrates for fumarate reductase, but this enzyme had high specific activity when HS-CoM and HS-HTP were used as electron donors. HS-CoM and HS-HTP were quantitatively oxidized by the fumarate reductase reaction, and results indicated that this reaction was irreversible. Additionally, by measuring formylmethanofuran, we demonstrated that the addition of fumarate to cell extracts activated CO2 fixation for the formation of formylmethanofuran. Results indicated that this activation resulted from the production of CoM-S-S-HTP (a compound known to be involved in the activation of formylmethanofuran synthesis) by the fumarate reductase reaction.  相似文献

This study was conducted to determine the relationship between testicular shape, scrotal circumference (SC) and sperm production. Twenty-seven mature Holstein bulls were evaluated subjectively and objectively for testicular shape as indicated by testicular length and width, then placed in 1 of 3 groups. Group 1 contained 17 bulls with a normal ovoid testicular shape and a length to width ratio of 1.61:1 +/- 0.01 (SEM). Group 2 was composed of 4 bulls with a long, slender testicular shape and a length to width ratio of 1.95:1 +/- 0.06 (SEM). Group 3 was comprised of 6 bulls with spheroid-shaped testicles and a length to width ratio of 1.3:1 +/- 0.03 (SEM). All the groups were statistically different for length to width ratios (P < 0.05). Length measurements from cranial to caudal pole of the testis proper were also different between groups (P < 0.05). Width or testicular diameter was different between Group 2 and Group 3 at P < 0.05; however, there was no difference between Group 1 and Group 2 or between Group 1 and Group 3. Predicted volumes and weights of testicles were not significantly different between groups. Scrotal circumference measurements were significantly different between groups (P < 0.05). Group 1 had an average SC of 43.07 +/- 0.36 cm (SEM), Group 2 of 39.33 +/- 1.18 cm (SEM) and Group 3 of 46.22 +/- 0.69 cm (SEM). Sperm production for a twice daily, 2-day-per-week collection schedule revealed a statistically significant difference for sperm output. A total of 2742 ejaculates was evaluated. A total of 1818 ejaculates was evaluated in Group 1, 440 ejaculates in Group 2 and 484 ejaculates in Group 3. The mean spermatozoal harvest per day for Group 1 bulls was 13.62 +/- 0.09 x 10(9) (SEM). Group 2 bulls with the longer-shaped testicles produced 14.82 +/- 0.18 x 10(9) (SEM) spermatozoa per day, and Group 3 bulls, with the more rounded testicle shape and the significantly larger SC produced 11.72 +/- 0.64 x 10(9)(SEM) sperm cells per day. All 3 groups were statistically different at the P = 0.05 level. The results suggest that prediction of sperm production may be dependent on factors other than SC, testicular volume, or weight. Testicular shape may influence sperm output in mature Holstein bulls.  相似文献

In non-nodulated soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merrill cv. Ransom]plants that were subjected to 15 d of nitrogen deprivation inflowing hydroponic culture, concentrations of nitrogen declinedto 1.0 and 1.4mmol Ng–1 dry weight in shoots and roots,respectively, and the concentration of soluble amino acids (determinedas primary amines) declined to 40µmol g–1 dry weightin both shoots and roots. In one experiment, nitrogen was resuppliedfor 10 d to one set of nitrogen-depleted plants as 1.0 mol m–3NH4+ to the whole root system, to a second set as 0.5 mol m–3NH4+ plus 0.5 mol m–3 NO3 to the whole root system,and to a third set as 1.0 mol m–3 NH4+ to one-half ofa split-root system and 1.0 mol m–3 NO3 to theother half. In a second experiment, 1.0 mol m–3 of nitrogenwas resupplied for 4 d to whole root systems in NH4+ : NO3ratios of 1:0, 9:1, and 1:1. Nutrient solutions were maintainedat pH 6.0. When NH4+ was resupplied in combination with NO3 to thewhole root system in Experiment I, cumulative uptake of NH4+for the 10 d of resupply was about twice as great as when NH4+was resupplied alone. Also, about twice as much NH4+ as NO3was taken up when both ions were resupplied to the whole rootsystem. When NH4+ and NO3 were resupplied to separatehalves of a split-root system, however, cumulative uptake ofNH4+ was about half that of NO3. The uptake of NH4+,which is inhibited in nitrogen-depleted plants, thus is facilitatedby the presence of exogenous NO3, and the stimulatingeffect of NO3 on uptake of NH4+ appears to be confinedto processes within root tissues. In Experiment II, resupplyof nitrogen as both NH4+ and NO3 in a ratio of either1:1 or 9:1 enhanced the uptake of NH4+. The enhancement of NH4+uptake was 1.8-fold greater when the NH4+: NO3-resupplyratio was 1:1 than when it was 9:1; however, only 1.3 timesas much NO3 was taken up by plants resupplied with the1 :1 exogenous ratio. The effect of NO3 on enhancementof uptake of NH4+ apparently involves more than net uptake ofNO3 itself and perhaps entails an effect of NO3uptake on maintenance of K+ availability within the plant. Theconcentration of K+ in plants declined slightly during nitrogendeprivation and continued to decline following resupply of nitrogen.The greatest decline in K+ concentration occurred when nitrogenwas resupplied as NH4+ alone. It is proposed that decreasedavailability of K+ within the NH4+-resup-plied plants inhibitedNH4+ uptake through restricted transfer of amino acids fromthe root symplasm into the xylem. Semen was collected from 5 mature beef bulls by electroejaculation before, during, and after 20 days of scrotal insulation. Thermally-induced testicular degeneration was irreversible in 3 of the bulls. Analysis of sperm and seminal plasma polypeptides revealed that 15 to 30 sperm polypeptides and 25 to 30 seminal plasma polypeptides were indistinguishable between bulls prior to the insulation treatment. Changes in the sperm polypeptides pattern appeared as early as 2 days after the insulation treatment and persisted for at least 11 months in 2 of the bulls. In the spermatozoa, there was a detectable loss of 31, 34, 49 and 58 kDa polypeptides and an appearance of 6 to 8 new major polypeptides, ranging from 32 to 83 kDa. The 83 kDa polypeptide was most prominent in the 2 bulls that regained normal sperm motility and morphology following the insulation period. The post-insulation appearance of a seminal plasma polypeptide (circa 60 kDa) was also identified in these 2 bulls. Seminal plasma polypeptides remained qualitatively unaltered by the insulation treatment in the 3 bulls with irreversible testicular degeneration.  相似文献

Sperm protamines have been isolated from representatives of three major plant groups: algae (Chara corallina ), bryophytes ( Marchantia polymorpha), and ferns ( Marsilea vestitia ). We previously reported the complete displacement of histones by protamines in Marchantia (Reynolds W F & Wolfe, S L, Exp cell res 116 (1978) 269 [8] ). Marchantia protamines appear as four components on acid-urea gels, whereas Chara and Marsilea protamines comigrate as a single band with a mobility comparable to salmon protamine. The amino acid compositions of the plant protamines show these to be arginine-rich, highly basic (35-42%) proteins which display overall similarity in amino acid composition (84-91%). The molecular weights of Chara and Marsilea protamines are approx. 4700-5300 D.  相似文献
