ABSTRACT Surveillance of human VTEC O157 has been reported in several countries, based on laboratory evidence. The incidence is generally less than 10 per 100 000 (the highest incidence is in children), with regional variations and a marked seasonality. Laboratory selection criteria and reporting have contributed to, but cannot entirely explain, variations within and between countries. Surveillance data and outbreaks in definable cohorts indicate that the spectrum of illness ranges from diarrhoea through acute bloody diarrhoea, with about 5% of cases developing haemolytic uraemic syndrome; less than 50% of patients report frank blood in their stools. Studies of sporadic cases have associated illness with beef products (particularly if undercooked and eaten outside the home), cooked sliced meat meals and contact with a household member with diarrhoea. Outbreaks have been attributed to contaminated foods (including beefburgers) and water, animal contact and person-to-person spread. Secondary transmission by the primary case in a household is of particular concern, and household transmission has been estimated at 4%, with patients excreting for around 10 days following onset. Recommendations for control have highlighted measures on farms, in slaughterhouses, retail and catering food premises, and in the home.  相似文献

A 30-33 kDa electroeluted fraction of T. gondii tachyzoites improved discrimination between acute and chronic phase sera when used instead of the whole tachyzoite extract in an avidity-ELISA. In order to identify the components of these fractions, crude tachyzoite antigen was fractionated by anionic exchange chromatography. The 30-33 kDa antigen cluster eluted in the not-bound fraction could account for a large proportion of the antibody response against the 30-33 kDa electroeluted fraction. According to the N-terminal sequence data, this antigen fraction is composed mainly of SAG1 and another protein with high homology to chitin binding proteins from plants.  相似文献

Following a single acute exposure to chlorine gas, persistenteffects on epicuticular waxes, cuticular transpiration, treegrowth and mortality were studied in foliage of Pinus ponderosaand Pseudotsuga menziesii for three growing seasons. Chlorinegas exposure caused foliar injury to both exposed foliage andfoliage that flushed after exposure (P < 0.05). The tendencyto form films of water rather than droplets was greater in directlyexposed foliage (P < 0.001). Rates of cuticular transpirationwere higher for directly and indirectly exposed foliage of Pinusponderosa up to 1 year after exposure and up to 6 months afterexposure for directly exposed Pseudotsuga menziesii(P < 0.001),after which P. menziesii needles defoliated. Total water content(TWC) and relative water content were significantly correlatedwith foliar injury (P < 0.05). TWC was lower for directlyexposed foliage up to 1 year after exposure (P < 0.001).There was no persistent negative effect on Fv/Fm ratios after1 year. Exposure to chlorine gas did not affect needle lengthor annual shoot increment growth, but exposure was correlatedwith increased bud production. Needle longevity of foliage thatflushed 2 months after exposure was reduced significantly (P< 0.001). Annual stem increment growth for both species decreasedover at least three growing seasons following chlorine gas exposure(P < 0.001), and depended on distance from the spill site.Cone production was lower for exposed Pinus ponderosa treescompared to controls (P < 0.05), and tree mortality was higherwithin approx. 50 m of the release site forPseudotsuga menziesii. Growth responses for both conifers agreed well with predictedpatterns of carbon allocation after defoliation caused by chlorinegas exposure. The chronic administration of estrogens to mice or rats will result in antidopaminergic effects. Apomorphine-induced climbing behavior in mice, the result of direct stimulation of dopamine receptors in the striatal and mesolimbic regions, is a simple animal model for examining these antidopaminergic effects of estrogens. Bromoestrogens, inhibitors of catechol estrogen formation, have been utilized in order to examine the role of estrogen metabolism in dopaminergic antagonism. Mice were pretreated for 3 days with 2-bromoestradiol, 4-bromoestradiol, or 2,4-dibromoestradiol dibenzoates alone or in combination with estradiol benzoate prior to apomorphine administration. The haloestrogens did not alter the climbing-induced responses elicited by apomorphine, whereas estradiol benzoate clearly attentuated the actions of apomorphine. Furthermore, the bromoestradiol dibenzoates were effective in reversing the effects of estradiol benzoate when the two steroids (estradiol benzoate and a bromoestrogen dibenzoate) were administered simultaneously during pretreatment. Thus, the bromoestrogens are able to inhibit the antidopaminergic effects of estradiol exhibited in the apomorphine-induced mouse climbing model.  相似文献

In mice, the response of carcass glycogen to glucose re-feeding after starvation is biphasic. The initial repletive phase is followed by partial (greater than 50%) glycogen mobilization. This turnover of carcass glycogen in response to carbohydrate re-feeding may play an important role in the provision of C3 precursors for hepatic glycogen synthesis.  相似文献
