The roles of genetic and environmental influences on stressful life events were examined in 3938 twin pairs (MZ, same-sex DZ, and opposite-sex DZ) using a sex-limitation model. Life events were assessed by personal interview, and were categorized as being either personal (i.e., events that occur directly to the individual) or network (i.e., events that occur to someone within the individual's social network, thus affecting the individual indirectly). Consistent with previous reports, genetic factors were found to exert more influence on personal events than network events. Genetic correlations between males and females suggest that many of the same genetic factors are acting within both genders. 相似文献

The barn owl (Tyto alba) is a non-migratory species widely distributed across much of North America in areas with extensive old-field and grassland habitat and without extensive winter snow cover. We investigated the genetic diversity and phylogeographic patterns of barn owl populations in western North America, ranging from British Columbia (BC) to southern California, and one eastern population from Pennsylvania. We also determined the genetic distinctiveness of a population off the coast of southern California, Santa Barbara Island, as management plans to control the local owl population are being considered to decrease predation rate on the now threatened Scripps’s Murrelet (Synthliboramphus scrippsi). Using 8 polymorphic microsatellite markers (N = 126) and ND2 mitochondrial sequences (N = 37), we found little to no genetic structure among all sampled regions, with the exception of Santa Barbara Island. The BC mainland population, despite its northwestern geographically peripheral location and ongoing habitat degradation, is not genetically depauperate. However, individuals from Vancouver Island, likewise a peripheral population in BC, exhibited the lowest genetic diversity of all sampled locations. The low global FST value (0.028) estimated from our study suggests that old-field agricultural habitats are well connected in North America. Since the BC population has declined by about 50 % within the last three decades, it is vital to focus on preserving the remaining barn owl habitats in BC to allow successful establishment from neighbouring populations. Additionally, our microsatellite data revealed that the population on Santa Barbara Island showed genetic divergence from its continental counterpart. Mitochondrial data, however, demonstrated that this island population is not a monophyletic lineage containing unique haplotypes, and hence cannot be designated as an Evolutionarily Significant Unit. 相似文献

Introduced by Bishop et al. in 1996, Generative Topographic Mapping (GTM) is a powerful nonlinear latent variable modeling approach for visualizing high-dimensional data. It has shown useful when typical linear methods fail. However, GTM still suffers from drawbacks. Its complex parameterization of data make GTM hard to fit and sensitive to slight changes in the model. For this reason, we extend GTM to a visual analytics framework so that users may guide the parameterization and assess the data from multiple GTM perspectives. Specifically, we develop the theory and methods for Visual to Parametric Interaction (V2PI) with data using GTM visualizations. The result is a dynamic version of GTM that fosters data exploration. We refer to the new version as V2PI-GTM. In this paper, we develop V2PI-GTM in stages and demonstrate its benefits within the context of a text mining case study. 相似文献

Roots of virtually all vascular plants have an endodermis with a Casparian band, and the majority of angiosperm roots tested also have an exodermis with a Casparian band. Both the endodermis and exodermis may develop suberin lamellae and thick, tertiary walls. Each of these wall modifications has its own function(s). The endodermal Casparian band prevents the unimpeded movement of apoplastic substances into the stele and also prevents the backflow of ions that have moved into the stele symplastically and then were released into its apoplast. In roots with a mature exodermis, the barrier to apoplastic inflow of ions occurs near the root surface, but prevention of backflow of ions from the stele remains a function of the endodermis. The suberin lamellae protect against pathogen invasion and possibly root drying during times of stress. Tertiary walls of the endodermis and exodermis are believed to function in mechanical support of the root, but this idea remains to be tested. During stress, root growth rates decline, and the endodermis and exodermis develop closer to the root tip. In two cases, stress is known to induce the formation of an exodermis, and in several other cases to accelerate the development of both the exodermis and endodermis. The responses of the endodermis and exodermis to drought, exposure to moist air, flooding, salinity, ion deficiency, acidity, and mechanical impedance are discussed. 相似文献

This paper presents the first record of silica deposits in tissues of Haemodoraceae and adds new records of tapetal raphides in this family. Within the order Commelinales, silica is present in leaves of three families (Hanguanacaeae, Haemodoraceae and Commelinaceae), but entirely absent from the other two (Pontederiaceae and Philydraceae). Presence or absence of characteristic cell inclusions may have systematic potential in commelinid monocotyledons, although the existing topology indicates de novo gains and losses in individual families. Silica sand was observed in leaves of five out of nine genera examined of Haemodoraceae, predominantly in vascular bundle sheath cells and epidermal cells. Within Haemodoraceae, silica is limited to subfamily Conostylidoideae. The occurrence of silica in Phlebocarya supports an earlier transfer of this genus from Haemodoroideae to Conostylidoideae. The presence of raphides (calcium oxalate crystals) in the anther tapetum represents a rare character, only reported in a few monocot families of the order Commelinales, and possibly representing a mechanism for regulation of cytoplasmic free calcium levels. Tapetal raphides were observed here in Anigozanthus and Conostylis (both Haemodoraceae), and Tradescantia (Commelinaceae), thus supplementing two earlier records in Haemodoraceae, Philydraceae and Commelinaceae. 相似文献

Species‐specific primers were developed for the pollen beetle (a pest in oilseed rape) for studies of predation by natural insect predators. Two forward and three reverse primers were designed within the mitochondrial COI gene and used in combination to amplify fragments in the size range of 163–290 bp. Remains of pollen beetle DNA were consistently detected in Pardosa spiders up to 24 h after ingestion but dropped drastically at 48 h. These primers will facilitate studies on biological control of this oilseed rape pest. Detection time was not correlated with fragment length as might be expected as the DNA gradually degrades into progressively shorter fragments over time. 相似文献
