The relationship between the opiate peptides Leu-enkephalin and [D-Ala2-Met5]enkephalinamide (DAME) and the initial expression and maintenance of ethanol preference was studied in male Wistar rats. Subcutaneous administration of both peptides prior to the first choice test between water and ethanol induced reductions on ethanol intake and subsequently on total fluid intake. Leu-enkephalin treatment also diminished ethanol preference in the day of treatment and in consecutive days. Neither Leu-enkephalin nor DAME treatments modified rats sucrose preference or intake. The results suggest that the enkephalins studied, when administered in the early phases of ethanol preference, interfere with the mechanisms involved in the propensity to drink ethanol. 相似文献

In contrast to the species with erythrocytes of high 2,3-bisphosphoglycerate content, in the sheep the concentration of 2,3-bisphosphoglycerate decreases during maturation of reticulocytes. The decrease can be explained by the drop of the phosphofructokinase/pyruvate kinase and 2,3-bisphosphoglycerate synthase/2,3-bisphosphoglycerate phosphatase activity ratios that result from the decline of phosphofructokinase, pyruvate kinase, phosphoglycerate mutase and the bifunctional enzyme 2,3-bisphosphoglycerate synthase/phosphatase. Logbooks ( n = 317) from whaling expeditions made in the North Atlantic during the 19th century were examined to investigate activity in the Gibraltar Straits grounds. At least forty expeditions of whaling vessels from European and American ports visited the area. In all cases the main target was the sperm whale, but pilot whales, dolphins, sea turtles, and even a blue whale were also taken. Whaling effort concentrated on the Atlantic side of the Straits; only two expeditions ventured into the Mediterranean Sea, obtaining negligible catches. The whaling season extended during spring and summer and peaked in June–July. This seasonality appeared not to be governed by changes in whale density but by the trade winds necessary to sail southward or westward to cross the Atlantic. Searching effort continued while trying out, but the rate of sighting cetaceans was about half that of searching periods. However, the rate of sighting or capturing a sperm whale remained unchanged during processing, probably because the gregarious habits of the species produced clumping of catches. For every whale secured, 1.31 whales were struck. After correcting for struck but lost whales and for "gammed" vessels, the minimum number of removals of sperm whales during 1862–1889 is estimated at 237. 相似文献

Abstract: The effect of lindane administration on the specific binding of ligands to different sites on the GABAA receptor-ionophore complex was studied in the rat brain by receptor mapping autoradiography. [3 H]Muscimol (Mus), [3 H]flunitrazepam (Flu), and t -[35 S]butylbicyclophosphorothionate (TBPS) were used as specific ligands of GABA, benzodiazepine, and picrotoxinin binding sites, respectively. Rats received a single oral dose of 30 mg/kg lindane and they were classified into two groups according to the absence or presence of convulsions. Vehicle-treated groups acted as controls. The effect of the xenobiotic on ligand binding was measured in different brain areas and nuclei 12 min or 5 h after its administration. Lindane induced a generalized decrease in [35 S]TBPS binding, which was present shortly after dosing. In addition, [3 H]Flu binding was increased in lindane-treated animals, this modification also appearing shortly after administration but diminishing during the studied time. Finally, lindane induced a decrease in [3 H]Mus binding, which became more evident over time. These modifications were observed both in the presence and in the absence of convulsions. However, an increase in [3 H]-Mus binding was detected shortly after lindane-induced convulsions. The observed decrease in [35 S]TBPS binding is in agreement with the postulated action of lindane at the picrotoxinin binding site of the GABAA receptor chloride channel. The effects observed on the binding of [3 H]Flu and [3 H]Mus may be secondary to the action of lindane as an allosteric antagonist of the GABAA receptor. 相似文献

Biosynthesis of polyamines in plants is controlled primarily by the enzymes ornithine decarboxylase (EC 4.1.1.17) and arginine decarboxylase (ADC: EC 4.1.1.19), which are responsible for the production of putrescine, and S -adenosyl-L-methionine (SAM) decarboxylase (EC 4.1.1.50) that is necessary for the formation of spermidine and spermine (Spm). Little is known about the metabolic or molecular mechanisms regulating the synthesis of these enzymes. We have studied the regulation of ADC synthesis by Spm in osmotically-stressed oat ( Avena sativa L. ev. Victory) leaves, using a polyclonal antibody to oat ADC and a cDNA clone encoding oat ADC. Treatment with Spm in combination with osmotic stress resulted in increased steady-state levels of ADC mRNA, yet the levels of ADC activity decreased. This absence of correlation is explained by the fact that Spm inhibits processing of the ADC proenzyme, which results in increased levels of this inactive ADC form and a consequent decrease in the ADC-processed form. Spermine treatment leads to delayed loss of chlorophyll in dark-incubated and osmotically-treated oat leaves. Thus, post-translational regulation of ADC synthesis by Spm may be important in explaining its anti-senescence properties. 相似文献
