Effect of a tryptophan lead on the swine adrenal cortex reactivity and behavioral response to stress]

Behaviour and plasma corticosteroid levels were investigated in pigs preloaded with 50 to 200 mg/kg 1-tryptophan. The treatment did not influence reactions to frustation and had no effect on continuous avoidance responding. However the adrenal response to the stress of new environment concomitant with delivery of unavoidable shocks was decreased (fig. 1), as well as the behavioural response to a fear signal superimposed on a continuous avoidance paradigm (fig. 2). These results point out relatively specific psychotropic effects of a tryptophan load in pigs.     

Modification of a method to study cell fusion induced in vitro by viruses]

A studying method of viruses induced cell-fusion is described, using monolayers of Vero monkey cells. Nature and density of cells and infection multiplicity are studied. The sensibility is equal to 4 hemagglutining units of Senda? and accuracy about +/- 3 % of polykaryocytosis. Quantification. comparison and kinetics study of cell-fusion are allowed by this method which may lead to systematic and routine exploration of cell-fusion ability of biological extracts from slow degenerative diseases of the human central nervous system.     

Spectroscopic forms of carbonmonoxi-cytochrome oxidase.

A systematic study of the errors of low-temperature recording of kinetics of the cytochrome oxidase-CO reaction had identified the classic devitrification process of Keilin & Hartree [(1950) Nature (London)165, 504-505]. The methodology described here minimizes this effect, and the computation methods afford appropriate ways of detecting a residual effect. Thus it has been possible to identify that absorption difference spectra and kinetics of the reaction of fully reduced or half-reduced cytochrome oxidase with CO indicate only one spectroscopic form of the respective carbonmonoxi-cytochrome oxidase.

The region of Bacillus stearothermophilus strain NCA 1503 23-S ribosomal RNA protected from T1 ribonuclease digestion by the 50-S ribosomal subunit protein L1 from Escherichia coli has been established. The sequence of 115 nucleotides is compared to the analogous region in E. coli. The similar behaviour of the RNA towards the recognition of protein L1 may be explained in terms of secondary base-pairing, even though there exists almost 40% difference between the primary nucleotide sequences.
