Addition of horseradish peroxidase to a luminol solution (pH = 9.4) produces a burst of light followed by a steady luminescence that lasts for several minutes. This steady-state luminescence is readily quenched by SOD, with a
concentration (the additive concentration needed to decrease by one-half the emitted luminescence intensity) of c.a. 4 ng/ml (14 mU/ml). The luminescence intensity decrease can then be employed to evaluate SOD activity in SOD-containing samples. However, the light intensity can also be quenched by additives, such as Trolox, that are able to trap luminol-derived intermediates. It is proposed that double quenching experiments must be performed in order to be able to relate the observed effect of an additive to its SOD-like activity. 相似文献

Inoculation with Azospirillum lipoferum Affects Growth and Gibberellin Status of Corn Seedling Roots
Maize (Zea mays L., hybrid Cargill 147) seedlings, grown inaseptic conditions, were inoculated with three strains of Azospirillumlipoferum (Al op 33, Al iaa 320, and ATCC 29708) or culturedin different concentrations of indol-3-acetic acid (IAA) orgibberellin A3 (GA3). After 48 h, root length, root surfacearea, root dry weight, and shoot dry weight were measured inall treatments. Gibberellin content was evaluated in selectedroots of control and Azospirillum inoculated seedlings by gaschromatography-mass spectrometry-selected ion monitoring withthe use of deuterated gibberellins as internal standards. Thethree strains of A. lipoferum, IAA (2 ng ml1), and GA3(40 to 400 pg ml1) significantly enhanced root growth.Improvement of root hair growth and density was obtained mainlywith A. lipoferum strain Al op 33 and GA3 40 pg ml1.GA3 was identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (byboth, full scan and selected ion monitoring) in a free acidfraction from roots of the seedlings inoculated with A. lipoferum.In the roots of the non inoculated seedlings GA3 was found afterhydrolysis of a fraction expected to contain glucosyl conjugates. Light and electron microscope observations characterized the layers that comprise Vigna vexillata L. pollen walls, and identified the timing of their development. Exine sculpturings form an unusually coarse ektexinous reticulum. The structure of the ektexine is granular; this differs from the columellate/tectate type of structure typical of most angiosperm pollen. The ektexine overlies a homogeneous-to-lamellar, electron-dense endexine, which in turn surrounds a thick, microfibrillar intine. Pollen grains are triporate and operculate, with Zwischenkörper and thickened intine underlying the apertures. The ektexine forms during the tetrad period of microspore development, the endexine and Zwischenkörper during the free microspore stage, and the intine during the bicelled (pollen) stage. Coarsely reticulate exine sculpturings and the granular structure of the patterned exine wall of the pollen grains are features that make this species suitable for detailed studies of pollen wall pattern formation. 相似文献

H. tageae sp. n. and Halicyclops ytororoma sp. n. are described from the intertidal interstitial water of Brazilian beaches.
H. tageae is distinguished from all congeneric species by the number of setae on legs 1–4 endopodite 2 (1, 1, 2, 2) and by possessing a reduced inner spine on the leg 5 exopodite. It shares with H. brevispinosus, H. pusillus and H. canui the spine formula 2, 3, 3, 3 on exopodite 3 of swimming legs 1–4.
H. ytororoma closely resembles H. gauldi and differs from this species by having 4 setae on leg 1 endopodite 3; H. gauldi has 3 setae on this segment.This is the first record of Halicyclops from marine interstitial water in Brazil. 相似文献

The postingestional effect of seed size and mass and nutrient composition on fruit profitability are reviewed. It is emphasized that profitability results from the interaction between fruit characteristics and the physiological and morphological traits of frugivores. The processes by which frugivores regurgitate or defecate seeds and the differential processing of the nutrient rich pulp and ballast in fruit are strongly dependent on the interaction between frugivore gut morphology and seed size. Euphonias that lack a functional gizzard defecate seeds, whereas tanagers that have a delete a functional gizzards regurgitate seeds. Some frugivores separate seeds from pulp and exocarp in the gizzard. It is hypothesized that the gizzard plays an important role in determining the postigestional fate of different pulp components. Although fruit nutrient content is often invoked as a determinant of frugivore feeding choices, studies that rely on proximal nutrient analysis, have often failed to find clear nutrient composition-preference correlations. It is argued that a partial reason for this failure is that proximal nutrient analysis ignores the complexities of fruit digestion. The ecological and physiological correlates of lipid and sugar assimilation are used to identify the limitations of traditional proximal nutrient analyses in fruit-frugivore studies. We suggest that recognizing the intricacies of the digestive characteristics of frugivores may reveal a much richer patterning in the interaction of frugivores with plants than has been previously hypothesized. 相似文献

Substance use disorders (SUDs) are highly prevalent and exact a large toll on individuals’ health, well-being, and social functioning. Long-lasting changes in brain networks involved in reward, executive function, stress reactivity, mood, and self-awareness underlie the intense drive to consume substances and the inability to control this urge in a person who suffers from addiction (moderate or severe SUD). Biological (including genetics and developmental life stages) and social (including adverse childhood experiences) determinants of health are recognized factors that contribute to vulnerability for or resilience against developing a SUD. Consequently, prevention strategies that target social risk factors can improve outcomes and, when deployed in childhood and adolescence, can decrease the risk for these disorders. SUDs are treatable, and evidence of clinically significant benefit exists for medications (in opioid, nicotine and alcohol use disorders), behavioral therapies (in all SUDs), and neuromodulation (in nicotine use disorder). Treatment of SUDs should be considered within the context of a Chronic Care Model, with the intensity of intervention adjusted to the severity of the disorder and with the concomitant treatment of comorbid psychiatric and physical conditions. Involvement of health care providers in detection and management of SUDs, including referral of severe cases to specialized care, offers sustainable models of care that can be further expanded with the use of telehealth. Despite advances in our understanding and management of SUDs, individuals with these conditions continue to be stigmatized and, in some countries, incarcerated, highlighting the need to dismantle policies that perpetuate their criminalization and instead develop policies to ensure support and access to prevention and treatment. 相似文献
